This week the media reported Sarah Palin’s new wardrobe cost $150,000. It didn’t report how much her 3 amigos’ suits cost. It didn’t report how much Michelle Obama’s wardrobe cost. Do you think this is but one example of the media’s sexist or ideological prejudice against Palin?

We have a biased media. The same one that doesn’t mention secret Service sent to the home of a person telling an Obama supporter that she objects to killing babies. Jessica.
I think it’s sexist but not necessarily ideologically motivated. I remember hearing endlessly about it when Michelle Obama wore that off-the-rack dress to go on The View.
I’m uncomfortable with the implication that a good business suit is part of what “makes” a man, and thus an understandable or even a positive expense, but a good pair of Cole Haan boots are frivolous and indicative of a stereotypically female self-indulgence tendency.
There are also layers of sexism in this because I think that a good wardrobe is, by and large, more important for a woman who wants to be taken seriously. If a woman wears the same few suits repeatedly she’ll be a joke; she’s basically required to dress herself with variety. But of course she can’t look like she puts thought or effort or — heaven forbid — money into it, because then she won’t be taken seriously. It’s all part of an “effortless,” “this old thing? I was born knowing exactly which large-buttoned bracelet-sleeve jackets I love, and I can’t for the life of me remember where I got this one, but I just threw it on this morning because I’m too smart to care about how stunning it makes me look” charade and I just hate it.
So yeah, I think it’s sexist that it’s more important for women to have the “right” wardrobe, and I think it’s doubly sexist for women who have the “right” wardrobe to be criticized for putting some arbitrarily-decided “excessive” thought or money into it. But I also think this is what happens when we lower the public discourse as a whole — $400 haircuts, anyone?
MILWAUKEE, Wis. (AP) ? A high-end clothing store in Brookfield, Wisconsin, is suing Oprah Winfrey’s mother for failing to pay her bill.
The civil complaint says Vernita Lee of Milwaukee owed Valentina nearly $156,000 for purchases and interest as of July 1 and has failed to make the monthly minimum payment of $2,000.
Store attorney Joseph Niebler Sr. says his client tried to resolve the matter with Lee before filing the lawsuit in Waukesha County Circuit Court.
The lawsuit says Lee told store officials she doesn’t think she owes the money. Reached by telephone, Lee declined to comment on the lawsuit.
Valentina co-owner Tony Chirchirillo says a $150,000 bill isn’t unusual for a client with a full calendar of social events.

$150,000 is not out of line money wise. It seems they are upset about on whom the money was spent. Democrats have a different methods for clothing transactions. Redistribution of wealth.
Doesn’t the fuss over the clothing budget have more to do with the fact that they spent campaign funds on it? The price of the other candidate’s clothes is irrelevant because they spent their own money.
I do agree that it’s sexist that we, as a society, seem to require that a woman candidate never appear in the same outfit twice, but a male candidate can wear the same three blue, gray, and black suits over and over.
But I think that the campaign funds are the heart of the issue here. I also wonder about the fact that the GOP is marketing her as a “typical hockey mom” and then outfitting her from Saks and Neiman Marcus. I don’t know any “regular” moms who can afford those stores.

Had the purchases been made by the McCain campaign, it would be a conversion of campaign money into personal use, which is prohibited. The same rule does not apply to money from party committees.
“The R.N.C. cleverly used the party committee’s money to avoid the liability that would have occurred if campaigns funds were used,” said Kenneth Gross, a lawyer who is an expert in campaign finance.
I don’t know what a party committee is, and following the details of this story much more closely makes me want to stab my eyes out, but it looks like the items were not purchased directly with campaign money.

Then somebody tell me why 97% of the electorate don’t hold presidential nominee Obama accountable for his friendship with Ayers?
How much did Joe Biden’s hairplugs cost?
Did he use his gov’t(taxpayer) paid insurance or paycheck to pay for them?
If Palin or McCain had launched their careers in the living room of an unrepentent clinic bomber, let’s say Eric Rudolph, the media would have gone ballistic. If McCain had sat in the pews of a church for 20 years while a minister spewed his hatred of America and issued an award to a well known racist/anti-semitic, the media would wail like a Greek chorus. If McCain claimed he was blissfully ignorant of anything this pastor said or believed, his mental stability would be questioned, right after he was reviled as a liar.
If Palin couldn’t keep her history straight(“president” Roosevelt on TV in 1929) and suggested the world terrorists were chomping at the bit to test McCain because of his inexperience, the media would be howling like banshees.
Instead we have what I laughingly call journalists who are so in the tank for Obama they get “tingles” up their legs and don’t even make a pretense of objectivity.
The American people are being taken in by some smooth talking novice who’s capability is questioned by his own VP candidate. People deserve the gov’t they get.

You have to be skeptical of the NY Times which has never been noted for its Republican sympathies and which I understand has endorsed Obama.
I am always skeptical, Mary. I think that if you’re looking for a refutation of the point that this is about the concern over use of campaign money, then some of the most convincing points can come from sources that don’t set out to support or protect the McCain campaign. They very clearly noted that Palin did not spend time picking out the clothes or shopping herself, that the clothes were not bought directly with campaign money, and that they would be donated afterwards or would otherwise need to be taxed. Those, I think, are three points that people looking to escape charges of frivolity or sexism would likely hide behind — “She was wasting crucial time shopping, is this a woman we want as VP?”; “It was campaign money and thus is our business;” “It’s inappropriate for her to accept gifts of this magnitude.”
But like I said, I don’t know what a party committee is or how closely linked it is to a campaign.

Neither has Sarah. But then, Michelle has hardly had to scrape her pennies. She enjoyed a 6 figure income working at a hospital that was alleged to have sent non-paying patients to other hospitals, and thanks to convicted felon and slumlord, Tony Rezko, the Obamas could buy a home for $300,000 under the asking price. Michelle should have a nice clothes allowance with all the money earned and saved and Barack should certainly be able to afford a new pair of shoes.

How interesting. Barack consulted Rezko, a well known political fixer under active federal investigation for “advice” on buying a home after his election to the US senate.
I didn’t realize we suffered such a serious shortage of real estate agents. I’m sure thankful I was able to find one when I needed such “advice”.

Ayers’ bombings had been done. He got off on a technicality. His group firebombed a judge’s home, attempting to kill him and his family, which included young children. Whether or not Obama launched his career in their living room they did host a “social” where he was designated the next state senatorial canidate by I believe Alice Palmer, the then senator.

The RNC used party committee money, not campaign funds. These clothes will either be donated to charity or auctioned and the money donated to charity.
I wonder how much of the $300,000 and the money Barack saved on real estate agent fees went to charity.
I’ve enjoyed Greta Van Susteren this week because she has talked a lot about Sarah and how unfairly she has been treated.
She had a former Hillary supporter on who was saying she is supporting Sarah now, this lady said there was an event they anticipated 3,000 and got 7,000 instead. She’s drawing bigger crowds than McCain in most cases, and even on a weekday morning.
I do believe Sarah has been treated extremely unfairly, and I think its because she is a Christian and very pro life.
I greatly admire her, and believe she has a bright future ahead of her regardless of the outcome of this election.
She has shown incredible poise and grace for someone who had no clue even six months ago that she would be doing this. She had very little prep time whatsoever, and has done admirably well.
Yes I am a Sarah fan!

The saddest part may be that they do realize all this, they are not being deceived, and they want Obama anyway. I think it is the “generation of love” coming home to roost. The 60’s generation is now in their 60’s and in political power and they are all about me, me, me. Iif it feels good do it. The establishment is our enemy except for any entitlements we can get. Religion is just a “mantra” that can change with the wind. The sad part is this is what Obama stands for and they know it and want it.
I know I have six children and two will be of voting age at the 2012 election, and another two at the 2016 election. They all know abortion is a scourge so I have the audacity to hope America will be majority pro-life in the generations to come. The “generation of love” turned out to be a generation of heathen.
Give Sarah a break. More expensive clothes hold up much better than cheap clothes. What she’s buying are classics, not trendy. She could wear them for 10-20 years if she wanted. Divide the cost of the clothes over 10 or 20 years, and it’s not that expensive. Yikes.

I enjoy going to Savers because the one in my area is pretty nice and you can get a whole wardrobe for $30. It’s nice for me because I like to wear layers and in this case I don’t have to spend a lot of money on clothes I won’t be showing off so much. I recently got a nice purple dress there for $5 that I wore to my cousins wedding. Now I don’t even feel bad about cutting it up and making it into a shirt. If I want something really nice and fancy I go to ModCloth.com but I’ve just been window shopping, one of their dresses could buy me two months worth of groceries!
It’s also nice that my sister and I, and like ten of our female cousins, are roughly the same size. Hand-me-downs FTW!

No, this is an example of someone who claims to be a working-class, penny-pinching common woman. Obama ran as an educated alternative to the college-flunkout politics of George Bush and John McCain.
To the extent that this is made an issue, perhaps it is because Obama only has 1 house, only has 1 car, in contrast to the supposedly hard-scrabble McCain and Palin.
Once you are suspected of being phony on one aspect of your life, it has the effect of calling into question the rest of one’s story as well. Lately Palin and McCain have been having trouble keeping their stories straight which only adds to the suspicions of reasonable people on both sides of the aisle.
Janet you mentioned that I eat lobsters and not cows in another post. You missed the part of my post where I say lobsters are the only meat I WOULD eat if I did not know lobsters personally. I met many of them at my job and they are wonderful, curious, intelligent, playful creatures who love life, like a human toddler.

Actually McCain has spent a good deal of time with just such a minister. John Hagee believes that Jews are not saved and will goto hell when they die if they do not “know” Jesus. This, even in the face of the fact that in the Bible Jesus was born a Jew and died as the King of the Jews.
Saying that Jews will goto hell because they don’t believe in the King of the Jews as savior renders the ridicious logic of Jesus condemning himself to hell. But this isn’t my theology, it’s the theology of John McCain’s pastor – John Hagee.
Since you bring up Obama’s relatively meager circumstances, I’m sure his bank account is bigger than Palin’s. He lives in a very nice area of Chicago near the lake and the University of Chicago. The fact that he has one car is no big deal. Many people in Chicago rely on public transportation because of traffic problems and don’t own a car. Car insurance in muy expensive. Obama certainly spends more money on the campaign trail than Palin or McCain. It’s all about winning the election, for both sides.

Considering the questions themsleves commit the logical fallacy of a “loaded question” the whoel thing is MEANINGLESS.
Last week: it’s a fallacy because Barack Obama didn’t launch his campaign in Ayers living room.
This week: it’s a fallacy because
1)the others spend their own money (as another poster pointed out)
2) Comparisons to Michelle Obama are moot because she isn’t the candidate, but the candidate’s wife (but I understand that some of the $150K was spent on Todd Palin and even Trig – hmmm – what office could a 6 month old be running for?)
3) We have heard about Edwards’ haircuts, Hillary’s clothes (gotta love her sensible shoes compared to Palin’s CFMP’s) and Michelle’s great off the rack dress and it’s price, and her elegant sense of style.

Unless you live in a tent (or rented trailer?) you would know that the asking price and selling price of a home are almost never the same.

Oh. Wow. This is great. It’s fantastic. THIS is what it’s coming down to? WARDROBE? Please tell me you aren’t serious. I so don’t care what anyone wears, and if that’s going to swing your vote or even help in forming your opinion on someone, your right to vote should be revoked.

Actually, wile Ayers was active in the WU, the group was quite careful not to hurt anyone. Phoning to give warning, and even te bombing at the judges home was meant to draw attention to the injustices of the time – not to kill.
It was years after Ayers stopped participating that the WU did actually hurt someone.

Bombing the judge’s home was meant to draw attention? One of the bombs was placed under the gas tank of a car in the driveway which could have resulted in a massive explosion and fire. Again Einstein, when you plant deadly explosives you don’t always control the results.
I would call planting explosives near someone’s home attempted murder, or at very least, a very reckless disregard for human life.

6. He has promised, “The first thing I’d do as President is sign the Freedom of Choice Act” (known as FOCA). This proposed legislation would create a federally guaranteed “fundamental right” to abortion through all nine months of pregnancy, including a right to abort a fully developed child in the final weeks for undefined ‘health’ reasons. In essence, FOCA would abolish virtually every existing state and federal limitation on abortion, including parental consent and notification laws for minors, state and federal funding restrictions on abortion, and conscience protections for pro-life citizens working in the health-care industry — protections against being forced to participate in the practice of abortion or else lose their jobs.

I think there no longer are any qualifications for anyone to run for President. You do not have to produce documentation regarding your status as an American citizen. You can be part of one of the most corrupt, investigated Democratic political machines in the nation. You NEVER have to confront the corruption and pay to play politics in your own political party or state, bring about any meaningful change, pass any definitive legislation (until Emil Jones decided to steal bills from other legislators to put your name on them). I would dearly love to agree with you that the media and journalists have responsibilities to the American people concerning what information they disseminate. The reality, however, is that they do not. Media outlets of all kinds exist for one reason: to make money. They do this by reporting on provocative stories.
You want to know why journalists don’t spend more time focusing on less “sexy” issues? It’s because those kinds of stories do not sell. Objectivity is difficult to achieve, even when one is striving for it.
One should also not fall for the trap of equating online news services with newspapers and the like: the standards are far lower. I’ve personally seen several New York Times articles that deal favorably with McCain.

No. FOCA will not nullify parental-notification laws because they do not prevent anyone from being able to get an abortion. You can still get an abortion, but your parents will be told. As long as there’s a judicial override for patients with parents inclined to honor-killings, parental-notification requirements are ok with FOCA.
Regarding asprin in school: schools CAN give asprin to minors who are EMANCIPATED from their parents. And docs can do ANY procedure on an emancipated minor, without the parents’ consent. Circumstances which cause a minor to be emancipated include living away from the parents, supporting onesself with a job, being married, having kids, AND BEING PREGNANT. That’s why you can do abortions on minors without parental consent, except in states with specific laws to the contrary– because all minor abortion patients are pregnant and therefore emancipated.

Yes you can, if she has ever been pregnant. Pregnancy (current or past) means she’s emancipated (except in states with laws to the contrary). No parental consent required for ANY treatment.

A first trimester abortion is a surgical procedure. I recall when efforts were first being made to legalize abortion, the argument was that abortion would be treated as a surgical procedure, with all the precautions and safety factors that go with any surgical procedure.

No we can’t and don’t. Whether or not the minor has been pregnant, we need parental consent. Unless they can prove they are emancipated or over 18y/o, we are on the phone to the parent or guardian.
Also, for the minor’s safety, we never discharge a minor without a parent or guardian being advised of symptoms of complications.

If a state wants to try to re-enact the law for parental notification, I think it might be challenged in the courts even though it passed muster before. That ruling would be subject to the judge’s opinion.

Janet, I think the retroactive effect would be applied to the stuff listed in Section 4, and not to stuff not listed. It’s saying in 4 that “a gov’t may not do so-and-so, and 6 says that laws among the so-and-so enacted prior to FOCA are affected too.
