Pro-life vid of the day: Pro-life nurse sues for discrimination
by Hans Johnson
Sara Hellwege, a student from Atlanta at the Frontier Nursing University, applied as a nurse/midwife to the Tampa Family Health Center. In an email exhange, Director of Human Resources Chad L. Lindsay, saw Hellwege was affiliated with the American Association of Pro-Life Obstetricians and Gynecologists (AAPLOG) and asked if this would prevent her from prescribing contraception. She quickly replied:
Yes, I am a member of AAPLOG. Due to religious guidelines, I am able to counsel women regarding all forms of contraception, however, cannot Rx it unless pathology exists — however have no issue with barrier methods & sterilization.
To which Lindsay answered: “Due to the fact we are a Title X organization and you are a member of AAPLOG, we would be unable to move forward in the interviewing process.”
Hellwege has filed complaints with the center, the EEOC, and HHS, as well as a federal lawsuit. Says Alliance Defending Freedom’s Senior Counsel Steven H. Aden: “Willingness to commit an abortion cannot be a litmus test for employment. All we are asking is for the health center to obey the law and not make a nurse’s employment contingent upon giving up her respect for life.”

Opening sentence of the video: Newsblonde says, “…. refused to hire her over her belief — shared by millions of Americans.”
It is good to see the news media admit that pro-life sentiment is widespread in our culture.
It is interesting that the employer felt secure in admitting the applicant was refused for her moral position. Normally employers are very careful about hiding their discrimination against protected classes: Race, gender, religion, disability, orientation and marital status.
The culture in these gov’t-subsidized agencies has become complacent about discriminating against moral persons. I think this is a direct result of the HHS Mandate.
Im surprised they admitted it also Del. Good for her though. A better door will open.
So she is filing a lawsuit because she wasn’t hired because she said up front she refused to do part of what would be her job her job. This is like an observant Jew applying for a job at a butcher shop and refusing to touch pork products or a person who objects to alcohol applying for a job at a liquor store and refusing to ring up alcohol purchases on moral grounds.
This is not an abortion facility, Tenn. This is a full-service healthcare center.
Jews and Baptists work in grocery stores all the time, but they aren’t forced to handle the pork or alcohol that offends them.
Pro-life Pharmacists are routinely given exemptions from filling orders for abortifacient drugs and even contraception, largely due to the influence of groups like AAPLOG. The guidelines for professional conduct and exemption are very clear and easy to accommodate.
It is really no different than accommodating a person with an injured back by having other staffers lift the heavy boxes in the stock room. We can hire people with reasonable conscientious objections to a small portion of the work.
We don’t exempt persons from hire because they have a common disability or conscientious objection.
Good answer, Del.
Is there a way to donate money to help her fund the lawsuit?
Don’t like a company’s policies?
Don’t work there.
Now, where have we heard that line before?
There is a huge difference between accommodating a disability, which is not a choice and accommodating an adults religion, which is a choice. And yes, this is a full service health clinic, not an abortion clinics, which means patients expect to see a practitioner who provides them with a full range of birth control options. As a nurse, she may approve of sterilization but can’t provide it. Women do not need to see a doctor to purchase condoms. NFP info is easily found on the internet. The patient should always come first and a patient at a full service health clinic should be able to see a practitioner that provides all options. I know a lot of people think that hormonal birth control causes abortions but this isn’t accepted by the mainstream medical knowledge. Until it is, this woman either needs to perform all job functions, not just the ones she likes, or she needs to do what pro-life people tell others to do all the time and take responsibility for her choices by accepting the limits it puts on her job options. If this is discrimination then a Catholic church refusing to hire a Baptist minister is as well. Laws that excuse people from doing their job because of a choice are garbage. Religious discrimination laws were intended to prevent employers from not hiring people because they are a certain religion, not to excuse people from doing their job. However, if it is discrimination not to hire based on religion then this should be applied to churches, synagogues and mosques as well. They are not allowed to refuse to hire based on race or disability so let them live by their own rules. Otherwise, they are being hypocrites, which Jesus had quite a lot to say about.
Tenn….slavery was legal at one point. I would love to hear your argument on that one.
What is “mainstream medical knowledge”, Tenn? Studies do show that hormonal birth control thins the uterus lining, which is why women are having such fertility problems. Not to mention these abortificants are classified as carcinogens, according to the World Health Organization. I have the right to practice in good conscience, therefore, providing the best care for my patients.
Tenn could you please post some scripture about how Jesus feels about murder? Thank you.
And Tenn…you seem to like to talk about gossip hypocrites and such. First of all you have to make your case ( so to speak ) you accused me of telling private info. about the Cleveland kidnapping victims. Lol I never told anything that hasnt already been put out there. Michelle Knight did 2 shows on Dr.Phil and told everything. Shes also written a book. Amanda and Gena are writing one too. Its not gossip if the victim put it out there. We know there was torture brutal rapes in that house abortions…performed by Castro on Knight and we know Amanda had Castros baby on Christmas day. Michelle Knight delivered that baby. Ive told you my step daughter and Amanda are joined at the hip. My step kids were on the news and in People magazine. My son plays with Amandas daughter if his sissy picks him up. So once again I ask WHAT GOSSIP? The girls were pesumed dead. It had been 10 long years. They were found and they are moving on. The world knows. Its been put up there.
Lets just say the Cleveland women said “We want our privacy. We dont want anyone to know what happened there. So leave us alone.” Then telling it anyway is gossip. Thats not what happened. Although the news crews have left and the case has died down some people see Amanda around town. Shes not hiding but she doesnt like to be approached. Thats why she generally has her sister or a friend with her. She just wants to get her life back to normal.
Tenn’s rationale…anti-slavery laws were intended to prevent slave owners from not having slaves, not to excuse them from doing there duty as slaves. The United States was founded on Christian principles…very humane principles. I suppose you would say that Slavery’s demise had nothing to do with “loving thy neighbor” and the 10 Commandments…the core of Christianity….a religion that has been around 2000 years more than any delusion you can talk yourself into today.
You see Kathy Tenn seems to have this habit of calling us hypocrites and me a gossip…even telling about celebrities who have abortions. Well alllllll of the info is on the internet so how is it gossip?
Let’s ask Tenn if he believes in justice and humanism. Both of these philosophies would say that stabbing one in the heart with a needle, dismemberment of a human, suffocation of a human, beheading of a human, and starvation of a human would all be inhumane and injust. Some of these atrocities happen due to taking oral/injectable contraceptives, and all of them occur due to abortion. So he is either a hypocrite or a against justice/humanity.
Kathy great idea! Somehow I beleve hes totally both!!
