Mother May I… Be Born spotlights HelpUsAdopt.org, an organization founded by an adoptive couple that “offers grants of between $500 and $15,000 toward adoption expenses for U.S. citizens who apply and qualify for this financial assistance.” MIBB also reminds us November is National Adoption Month.
On a related topic, because the majority of Asians made available for adoption are girls, is a post by NationalPro-LifeRadio linking to a LifeSiteNews.com article on a United Nations Population Fund report released the end of October that is surprising in its candor on the impact and impetus for Asia’s sex-ratio imbalance crisis. UNFPA has just added Vietnam to the list….
That this report comes from UNPFA is a shock because UNPFA has been rightfully accused of contributing to the problem by encouraging China’s coercive one-child abortion policy. In fact, the Bush Administration has refused to fund UNPFA for 5 years for that reason. (Read our side’s position here, UNFPA’s position here.)
I’m going to stop (Prolifer)ations here instead of just spotlighting the post as I usually do and moving on because I’m finding this information very disturbing and a phenomenon we can’t ignore. From the LSN article:
Vietnam has joined the ranks of aborting nations that have seen their population trend towards more boys than girls, a UN-sponsored report says. Sex-selective abortion has resulted in many countries where abortion is common, such as India and China, having grave concerns about the their demographic imbalance.
The United Nations Population Fund report shows that Vietnam has been added to the list of countries facing possible demographic implosion as too few girls are allowed to survive to birth.
The report says that the international ratio of boys to girls is about 105 to 100. But in Vietnam the ratio has shifted to 110-100 and is as high as 120-100 in some provinces. The highest provincial ratio was 123 boys to 100 girls.
Since the introduction under Vietnam’s communist regime of abortion on demand, and the advent of ultra-sound technology, the country’s birth rate has declined and the traditional preference for boys over girls has created the current growing imbalance.

Although not as draconian as China’s one-child policy, Vietnam’s communist rulers have imposed a two-child limit on families for two decades….
The report identifies the “pressure to adhere to the two-child policy” as a factor in the imbalance.
UNFPA deputy executive director Purnima Mane… warned of a possible increase in trafficking of women and domestic violence as consequences of the gender imbalance.
The report said about 25,000 expected baby girls went “missing” – meaning aborted – in Vietnam last year alone.
The study’s author, French demographer Christophe Guilmoto… stated the imbalance could lead to a destabilizing of the entire marriage system and lead to violence and social unrest as the demand for wives increases.
Current research indicates that across Asia, the ratio is 2.1 billion men to 1.9 billion women with some Asian countries having between 5 and 20 per cent more men than women.
Dr. Guilmoto estimated that even if the current rates of gender selection are addressed, there would still be 33 million more men than women in India and 25 million more in China by 2050.
Here are shocking words from the report itself (click to enlarge):

Once again, I raise my glass to cultural valuation.
It’s heading nowhere fast.
Thanks, abortion. You really are the population bomb. *glass clink*
Governments instituting these population policies may suffer from myopia. Whether a one, two or even three child max, a coercive policy can have unintended consequences.
I worry that within these affected areas the problem may not be explained in a way that will help people decide against it. Women are under pressure to reproduce according to a culturally defined standard.
Even if people generally don’t think that gender selection abortions are good, enough people may still feel that they personally don’t want a girl and the trend will continue. Like in the US, generally we know that smoking bad, but enough people still do it that it constitutes a public health problem. Education has an effect, just not enough.
It’s all the macho “I want to carry on my name” bullcrap, that means, if you can only have one child, you want it to be a male. There are still many Chinese who don’t adhere to the one child policy.
Education is about changing the culture of things, which does not happen overnight. You can’t get a person to stop smoking simply by telling them its bad for them, if they have been a smoker pretty much their entire life. Forcing people to have abortions is trying to fix a complicated problem overnight, and it doesn’t help anyone. In the same way, leaving people to their own devices and letting them go ahead and have more children than they can feed is not helping anyone either.
Hippie,
Good morning. I have a friend that is about to go to China to meet their new adopted daughter. China has just put in place new adoption laws that will make it very hard to adopt from China. It took the 2 years. The general waiting time starting in Jan of ’08 could be as much as 4 years. Two examples of the new requirements are that neither of the adopted parents may have any facial deformities, they must to be under a certain weight and BMI. As a personal trainer BMI is not a very good indicator of health. You can have a low BMI and still be unhealthy. These are just new ways to discourage adoption bc of their population inbalance.

Yeah! A law-abiding American was forced to change her way of life because of violent terrorist threats.
Gee, Zeke, when are you going to renounce Christ and embrace Islam like the violent terrorists want YOU to? Maybe it’s time you showed some obedience…
Agreed that a more males-to-females ratio can be tough on people, but population pressure does have consequences.
The huge and growing gap in the ratio of men to women in Asia is a result of man trying to play God, by literally exterminating millions of baby girls.
Jill used the word “implode”, and that is mild compared to what is actually happening.
Much prayer is needed for these peoples and nations as well as for the West, lest in sowing the wind, we reap the whirlwind.
I recently read an article that profiles the same occurance in India. The article was called The Lost Generation. I think one family alone aborted 15 girls. They were shunned by their community for not being able to produce a healthy boy.
Aborting girls is having a teriible impact on their society. Not enough women to date and/or marry. The instance of rape has increased dramatically.
Laura,
If you are out there, I have a question. You have posted a study several times on the evils of teenagers having babies. It states that children born of teenagers are more apt to be killed or die at the hands of their mothers.
Since you are so concerned about the welfare of children…..
When you go behind a Denny’s to buy your illegal drugs do you ever think of the children or teenagers killed so you can get your high?
It just seems so hypocritical of you to say that you are so concerned for the children born from teenagers but…..you support the illegal drug trade and well we all know how many innocent people are gunned down in drive by shootings, gang killings, etc……..
Just curious. If you don’t answer here I will keep asking the question on other threads.
Sandy,
I know of a family which has only had boys for the last seven generations. It makes me think that maybe there is a genetic thing going on. If they conceived 15 girls and no boys, there may be a reason. It is better to go with what nature gives you. I thought I wanted girls and both times my hubby thought it would be a girl, but we have boys. We wanted girls but we are still happy with boys. My inlaws wanted boys but have girls. They are thrilled just to have children.
Interestingly two sets of my inlaws tried every medical intervention under the sun to get pregnant and nothing worked. About a year after giving up, they conceived, and the following year, conceived again. I think it was 4 babies in 3 years.
I think it is the controlling personality that wants things to be 100% their way 100% of the time. Life isn’t like that. Maybe my inlaws needed to learn that before they had children. Who knows.

Yes, Sandy.
The fact that I once bought weed behind Denny’s 20 years ago generated the mighty South Pacific tsunami that killed 250,000. It was also linked to the deaths of Pricess Di, Lassie, Robert Goulet, and the disappearance of Madeline McCann.
It was THAT GOOD!
Laura,
You actually avoided the question. Once again.
Laura, don’t forget Amelia Earhart.

…And Hoffa. It’s all my fault.

Hippie, one sister-in-law of mine had a boy, then a miscarriage, then a boy, then two miscarriages. Some doctors thought that her body might be “rejecting” the embryo/fetus if it was female, so there may be something genetic like that – I’d never heard of it before.
They really wanted to have another kid, and on the sixth try, Isabella was born. Now if it’d been a boy, he’d have been loved and well-taken care of, but you talk about being “just thrilled” to have a girl….!
I’ve thought about this situation – have heard people ask what people think about their “son or daughter that they aborted.” Had one of the miscarriages not occurred, and a child born, then there’d have been no Isabella Marie – a thing which is simply unthinkable to the rest of us in the family now.
I gotta learn how to post pictures here and I’ll share a picture.
Doug
Laura and Doug,
Hoffa was Sally’s fault. Don’t try to hog all the glory.
Doug,
Had one of the miscarriages not occurred, and a child born, then there’d have been no Isabella Marie
Or there could have been a little Freddy AND and Isabella Marie. (Beautiful name by the way)
I had four sons, and it was 17 years til I got a girl. We checked her “parts” every day for a week, just to make sure nothing “appeared” while we weren’t looking. But she remained a girl.
And then we had Johnny 3 years later. It was never a question of either or. Just both.

…………………………………………….
Thanks a lot MK! Now the witness protection program is going to have to relocate me.
I know a couple that had 6 boys before they got their girl. I babysat them exactly once and remained convinced for many years that I never wanted kids. Of course my kids turned out to be perfect angels. Hee hee.
Sally,
I don’t remember you babysitting for me…Oh, you mean a different family with lots of boys…lol.
We didn’t even bother getting sitters. Something about cruel and unusual punishment being illegal.
Hey, we could use that on the “torture” thread!
Islamist Extremists tortured by being forced to watch families with all boys!!!
MK: Laura and Doug, Hoffa was Sally’s fault. Don’t try to hog all the glory.
(Believe me, Laura is responsible for more things than you know.)
Hey now – I am the arbiter of all things culturally significant.
Wait for it.
Okay, I’m totally kidding.
But not about Laura. (I’ve always loved her. There is an exuberance to her….)

MK, not that time – they really only wanted three kids (they are staunch Catholics, by the way) and that was all they were gonna have. Oh Geez – I guess you could argue about that, eh? My Wife’s grandma was named Marie, a mighty woman of Sicilian descent though she was 4′ 8″ tall.

WOW – that’s cool (I am Pro-Choice, after all). My mom had three boys, two years apart each, and then our sister Julie came, three years later. Julie, after having two boys, had Victoria Faith, and this too was a great thing for our family. My sister-in-law Pam had three boys, and then, in a most unexpected deal, had Lauren Marie (and isn’t that a nice name? It’s been a “last came the girl” family here.
