Heisman winner could have been aborted
On Saturday, University of Florida Gators QB Tim Tebow became the first sophmore in the Heisman Trophy’s 73-year history to win.
Good thing his mother believed in the sanctity of life, or Tebow would have been just another abortion statistic. From the Gainesville Sun, December 7:
In 1985, [parents Pam and Bob, pictured right with Tim] moved to the Philippines, where they served as Christian missionaries.
Hoping to expand their family, they prayed for “Timmy” by name.
Just before she became pregnant, Pam fell into a coma after contracting amoebic dysentery, which is transmitted through contaminated drinking water. Her treatment required a series of strong medications. As a result of those medications, doctors told Pam the fetus had been irreversibly damaged, and they strongly advised her to have an abortion. She refused because of her faith, she said. Pam spent the last two months of her pregnancy on bed rest, and on her due date – Aug. 14, 1987 – she gave birth to a healthy baby boy, who she described as “skinny, but rather long.”
Several other future Heisman contenders weren’t so lucky.

Awesome story! I know two women off the top of my head who were in the same situation. They were advised to end their pregnancies and both delivered healthy happy babies.
I think it’s a great article. Really makes a good point. On a semantics note… any thoughts on how she fell into a coma ‘just before’ she became pregnant? I am assuming that she came out of the coma before she became pregnant too – that would be a weird surprise upon waking.

Oh hell, have her pick our Lotto numbers.
Doctors are suppose to advise patients on what they believe is right. A doctor will advise a cancer patient to do chemo. etc. A friend of my mother had breast cancer. Her doctor advised her to do chemo. She said she didn’t want to put that poison in her body. She took herbal medications instead. A few months later… guess what she was cancer free. “Look another case where the doctor was wrong” Doctors should really stop telling cancer patients to do chemo *note the sarcasm*

What isn’t so wonderful is a doctor advocating abortion for someone who isn’t asking for it and doesn’t want it. It is fine for them to explain risks but suggesting abortion is way out of line. It is abuse of his position to suggest abortion and pressure a patient to do it. Even someone who supports abortion should remain neutral if her life is not in immediate danger. They should explain the situation and options but stop short of suggesting what they would do. If he were pressuring her not to abort, what would you think of that? Would you find that unprofessional or is he within his rights to push his beliefs one way or the other?

Perhaps there was an immaculate conception while she was in the coma. Heisman hopeful indeed! Just wait until Timmy starts walking on water.

I agree, but how do we know that the doctor didn’t explain the options and the mother started telling people “he told me to abort” OR how do we know the mother didn’t take his telling her options as him saying she “should have an abortion”

No, they aren’t. They should explain the situation and available options and likely outcomes. The lady in the story was not at risk. Her health had improved. They just couldn’t be sure the baby would still be okay and they didn’t want to take the chance they would be blamed and maybe sued. If she “chooses” abortion they are free and clear because that would be her responsibility. Truth is doctors get sued and lose cases for damaged babies even if it is not their fault. No matter how much they believe it is “right” to abort a damaged baby, they are overstepping by suggesting abortion.

In a nation of 300 million where 50 million have been aborted, uh, like, it is certainly statistically probable that some great athletes, scientists, criminals, butchers bakers and candlestick makers are missing.
What isn’t so wonderful is a doctor advocating abortion for someone who isn’t asking for it and doesn’t want it. It is fine for them to explain risks but suggesting abortion is way out of line.

Why can’t you believe the woman? Why do we suspect her story? Do we suspect men who say the doctor told them this or that? My friend had cancer and his doctor told him he got it all and he didn’t need chemo. So my friend went out and got another opinion because his wife wanted to be sure. The second doctor said that maybe they did ideed get it all but he would give him chemo. Shall I now say maybe he just misuderstood the first guy? I don’t have any idea what was said and I don’t suspect that he misunderstood.

Doctors don’t usually tell pregnant women to abort unless they ask. I have been pregnant and the doctor never suggested I abort. This lady had recovered. Her health wasn’t in danger. There is no medical reason to suggest abortion. He had an obligation to inform her that her baby might not be okay. That is it.
Likewise those of us who are flabby or flat chested could get cosmetic surgery, but as yet no doctor has ever suggested it to me since there is no medical reason for it.

That must be why it is practically impossible for a woman to get a tubal ligation if she young and doesn’t want kids. Because the doctor doesn’t believe in it or in her. It is still an uphill battle being a woman.

Give me a break. My neighbor was pregnant with her seventh (yes, 1,2,3,4,5,6,7th) baby and the doctor told her to abort. Nothing wrong, no history of high risk, just too many babies. Needless to say she didn’t go back to him for her 8th baby.

Ironically, many proaborts argue that THEY can tell the future of aborted fetuses, when they say that it’s “compassionate” to abort a fetus that is doomed to have a “horrible life, full of nothing but misery”.
What they don’t say is whether it would be “compassionate” to kill born kids that are ALREADY living miserable lives…..
