Pro-Obama columnist: Public support of healthcare “virtually impossible”; Obama coalition “destroyed”
Our August 12 quote of the day was from that month’s Salon column by liberal and Obama supporter, Camille Paglia. This month’s piece is just as frankly honest. The entire column is excellent. Here are excerpts:

… As an Obama supporter and contributor, I am outraged at the slowness with which the standing army of Democratic consultants and commentators publicly expressed discontent with the administration’s strategic missteps this year. I suspect there had been private grumbling all along, but the media warhorses failed to speak out when they should have – from week one after the inauguration, when Obama went flat as a rug in letting Congress pass that obscenely bloated stimulus package. Had more Democrats protested, the administration would have felt less arrogantly emboldened to jam through a cap-and-trade bill whose costs have made it virtually impossible for an alarmed public to accept the gargantuan expenses of national healthcare reform. (Who is naive enough to believe that Obama’s plan would be deficit-neutral? Or that major cuts could be achieved without drastic rationing?)

By foolishly trying to reduce all objections to healthcare reform to the malevolence of obstructionist Republicans, Democrats have managed to destroy the national coalition that elected Obama and that is unlikely to be repaired. If Obama fails to win reelection, let the blame be first laid at the door of Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, who at a pivotal point threw gasoline on the flames by comparing angry American citizens to Nazis. It is theoretically possible that Obama could turn the situation around with a strong speech on healthcare to Congress this week, but after a summer of grisly hemorrhaging, too much damage has been done. At this point, Democrats’ main hope for the 2012 presidential election is that Republicans nominate another hopelessly feeble candidate. Given the GOP’s facility for shooting itself in the foot, that may well happen….
An example of the provincial amateurism of current White House operations was the way the president’s innocuous back-to-school pep talk got sandbagged by imbecilic support materials soliciting students to write fantasy letters to “help” the president (a coercive directive quickly withdrawn under pressure). Even worse, the entire project was stupidly scheduled to conflict with the busy opening days of class this week, when harried teachers already have their hands full. Comically, some major school districts, including New York City, were not even open yet. And this is the gang who wants to revamp national healthcare?
Why did it take so long for Democrats to realize that this year’s tea party and town hall uprisings were a genuine barometer of widespread public discontent and not simply a staged scenario by kooks and conspirators?…. But the truly transformative political energy is coming from talk radio and the Web – both of which Democrat-sponsored proposals have threatened to stifle, in defiance of freedom of speech guarantees in the Bill of Rights….
Why has the Democratic Party become so arrogantly detached from ordinary Americans? Though they claim to speak for the poor and dispossessed, Democrats have increasingly become the party of an upper-middle-class professional elite, top-heavy with journalists, academics and lawyers (one reason for the hypocritical absence of tort reform in the healthcare bills). Weirdly, given their worship of highly individualistic, secularized self-actualization, such professionals are as a whole amazingly credulous these days about big-government solutions to every social problem. They see no danger in expanding government authority and intrusive, wasteful bureaucracy. This is, I submit, a stunning turn away from the anti-authority and anti-establishment principles of authentic 1960s leftism.
How has “liberty” become the inspirational code word of conservatives rather than liberals? (A prominent example is radio host Mark Levin’s book Liberty and Tyranny: A Conservative Manifesto, which was No. 1 on the New York Times bestseller list for nearly 3 months without receiving major reviews, including in the Times.) I always thought that the Democratic Party is the freedom party – but I must be living in the nostalgic past….
The top schools, from the Ivy League on down, promote “critical thinking,” which sounds good but is in fact just a style of rote regurgitation of hackneyed approved terms (“racism, sexism, homophobia”) when confronted with any social issue. The Democratic brain has been marinating so long in those clichés that it’s positively pickled.
Throughout this fractious summer, I was dismayed not just at the self-defeating silence of Democrats at the gaping holes or evasions in the healthcare bills but also at the fogginess or insipidity of articles and Op-Eds about the controversy emanating from liberal mainstream media and Web sources. By a proportion of something like 10-to-1, negative articles by conservatives were vastly more detailed, specific and practical about the proposals than were supportive articles by Democrats, which often made gestures rather than arguments and brimmed with emotion and sneers. There was a glaring inability in most Democratic commentary to think ahead and forecast what would or could be the actual snarled consequences – in terms of delays, denial of services, errors, miscommunications and gross invasions of privacy — of a massive single-payer overhaul of the healthcare system in a nation as large and populous as ours. It was as if Democrats live in a utopian dream world, divorced from the daily demands and realities of organization and management….

It’s not just abortion.
Here’s another reason why no pro-life voter can support ObamaCare:

I have to admit, I am finding it difficult to realize any sympathy for Ms. Paglia.
You cooked your meal, now you eat it, babe!
Of all the liberal commentators that I am familiar with, Paglia has to be one of the more honest ones. She rarely indulges in unicorn policies. Which makes wonder whether she really isn’t a pseudo-closet conservative in hippie clothes.
Here’s a telling statement:
“At this point, Democrats’ main hope for the 2012 presidential election is that Republicans nominate another hopelessly feeble candidate. Given the GOP’s facility for shooting itself in the foot, that may well happen….”
Just last night, that “idiot” housewife from Wasilla posted an article on the Wall Street Journal, on the eve of O’s 112th speech about how we need reform (again). Nothing in her article was inaccurate; au contraire, it was well footnoted and spoke to the heart of the matter. Even Couric couldn’t touch her.
If Wasilla Woman keeps it up, she just might be a formidable force on the 2012 team. And Obama will have to own it and eat it, every last crumb.
I See a Convert in The Making. A Real free thinking American. Not Red Or Blue,Just an Image of an American Flag. Common Sense is breaking the Obamabot Spell. We Can Only Hope For That Change.
Obamabot…LOL. I like that. :)
I do not want Ms. Paglia on our team. She thinks pedophilia is a-ok.
It’s just that she’s now realizing what it means to be a liberal, and it’s not savory. It’s an acquired taste, I’m sure, and most other liberals have learned to like it. I’m sure Ms. Paglia will too, in time.
Soooo….she’s blaming the Democrats for not protesting Obama’s stupid actions BUT she’s still an Obama supporter?
…am I missing something here?
Wow. Certainly if this loyal liberal can align her opinion so closely with what many conservatives have vocalized lately, the spotlight on the true socialistic radicalism embedded in the Obama administration’s agenda must be glaring indeed. It’s like there has been a ‘cell’ hidden in our nation for decades… waiting… circling like a vulture.
This is great! Thanks for pointing it out, Jill.
Thanks, Scottie!
Whatever it takes … I am just glad that the “healthcare reform” will not make it as Obama wanted it.
The real racist have come out. After #43 aren’t we better off?
I truly understand, people would rather see #44 FAIL than uplift the country and move forward. White Republicans are afraid of the Black Man!
Guess what? He’s not going back to Africa.
Karma is something. There is more to come. These people bleed hate…check it out.
I’m not white. I am a Republican, an American, and I don’t give a rat’s posterior what color Obama is, his policies would be disastrous for our country if he were red, purple, or green with pink polka-dots.
I’m sick of little pissants like you who can’t argue for or against someone’s policies or ideology based on the virtues thereof going around accusing everyone of being a racist. YOU are the one who first said ANYTHING about race.
We are against Reid and Pelosi too, are we also racist against whites?
Brian,
Actually, I’d love to see PBHO succeed. Unfortunately, his current policies are certain failure. I’m not interested in seeing them continue because if they do, he fails and we fail as a country.
I want this country raised up. Hence, I’d love to see PBHO instituting good, solid, successful policies.
See? I’m all supportive like that. :)
And as for the skin tone issue, whatever. I’d be equally as bothered by a white guy with 100% approval ratings from NARAL and PP. Or an Indian guy. Or anyone, for that matter.
You’ll note, we were discussing policies until you brought up the race card. We don’t talk about his family heritage. Because it doesn’t matter, does it?
So why are you so hung up on it?

Brian,
I didn’t like Clinton any better than Obama. No racism here, no hoping for failure of the person. It’s just that I’m pro-America and pro-liberty and hope for policies which support both. Oh, Levin has a delivery that can grate on a person, but the content of his radio show is definitely worth listening to. It’s a far cry from the far left MSM.

“You’ll note, we were discussing policies until you brought up the race card. We don’t talk about his family heritage. Because it doesn’t matter, does it?”
“So why are you so hung up on it?”
MaryRose,
It’s an easy response and doesn’t address the issues.
It’s an easy response and doesn’t address the issues.
Doesn’t address the issues is right!
Because when it comes to the issues, PBHO’s policies are failing miserably already. But the dems are caught up in Hope-nosis. Well, many of the dems, anyway.
“But the dems are caught up in Hope-nosis. Well, many of the dems, anyway.”
Clever!
Thanks, Janet. I can’t really claim it as my own, much as I’d like to. Got the term from a little .gif image I ran across. Nail on the head, I thought. :)
this rascism is just to cover up that, you obama supporters cant really argur anything fidderent!
