Reid flip flops on working weekends to attend own fundraiser; GOP says no; Reid nixes fundraiser
That was then, this is now…
What’s really going on, as spotlighted in an ABC story linked on Drudge yesterday and today:
… The Senate has been working at a breakneck pace (for the Senate) on the health reform legislation. Lawmakers worked all last weekend on Democrats’ health reform bill and they worked the Saturday before Thanksgiving and all signs indicated they would work this coming weekend too.
But Reid, who wants to get a healthcare bill finished by Christmas, urged Republicans on the Senate floor to forego a debate on several conference reports this weekend in order to give Senators and staffers the weekend off.
“I understand the Republican leader doesn’t want us to do health care. I appreciate that. He and I have different positions on that,” said Reid. “I see no reason to punish everybody this weekend and I hope the minority will give strong consideration to the proposal that i’ve made.”
But in addition to shepherding the health care bill through the Senate, Reid is also locked in a tough reelection campaign.
And in that regard his desire for a weekend off is not so benevolent to other Senators and staffers.
It turns out Reid has a 1k plus per plate fundraiser scheduled for Saturday in New Orleans, according to one local paper, which also reports that Sen. Mary Landrieu, D-LA, a key swing moderate in the health care debate, will also be in attendance.
But Reid will not escape the health debate even in the Big Easy; the paper reports that Tea Party activists who oppose health reform are planning to picket the fundraiser.
Whoops, Reid – ever the oaf – should never have dissed Republicans in his pitch. Minority Leader Mitch McConnell issued a press release yesterday saying no, we’re staying. Click to enlarge…

The ABC story continued…
Republicans rejected Reid’s request Thursday morning to fast track several spending bills, clear the floor for health reform votes next week, and take the weekend off.
“Republicans are prepared to provide a platform for the debate as long as it takes,” said Sen. Mitch McConnell, noting that “The majority leader said we would be working every weekend and we took him at his word.”
We expect to be here this weekend and we look forward to it. Republicans believe there is nothing more important we can do than stop this bill and start over… we are eager to continue the debate.”
“I know people have fundraisers because they are running for reelection and people have other important things to do, but there is nothing more important to do than this,” said McConnell.
What being in session means for the reform bill is unclear; the Senate floor debate is largely a side show. There have been 14 amendments in 10 days of debate. The real action on the bill is taking place off the Senate floor as Democrats search within their own caucus for the 60 votes they’ll need to pass the reform bill.
Now, according to the Las Vegas Review-Journal…
Reid said Thursday he has canceled a fundraiser brunch that was set for Saturday in New Orleans. His disclosure came after Republicans demanded Reid keep the Senate working through a second consecutive weekend.
Reid… took to the Senate floor and blasted Republicans for trying to “embarrass or denigrate” him.
“I think that this debate has really come to a point that I’ve rarely seen in the Senate – in fact, I’ve never seen it,” Reid said. He said he would never make insinuations about fellow senators and fundraisers.
“Any events I had scheduled this weekend have been canceled,” Reid said. “Events I had last weekend had been canceled. 4 or 5 of them.”
Reid kept senators in session last weekend, working to complete a massive health care overhaul by Christmas. With the health bill temporarily tied up, Reid floated the idea of allowing senators to go home this weekend if Republicans would agree to speed votes on an unrelated appropriations bill.
Republicans, who are trying to kill the health bill, refused to go along.
Sen. Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., the Republican leader, suggested Reid was eager to leave town….
The New Orleans event was to be hosted by Sen. Mary Landrieu… and political consultant James Carville….
The New Orleans Times-Picayune reported tickets for brunch with Reid were to cost $1k to $4,800. Tea Party organizers were preparing a protest march on the event, dubbing it the “Streetcar Named Retire.”….

Remember, Ried is the same guy who said, “the Iraq War is lost”.
This guy deserves to be canned and I wish Nevadians would wake up to this misguided soul’s big and lying mouth and his antics.
Perhaps Jill can do a rendition of all his past infamous quotes and statements.
Phil, that sounds like a good homework assignment for you! :)
“Streetcar Named Retire”
LOL Awesome!!
These people are complaining that they haven’t been home in two to three weeks because of someone’s obsession to socialize healthcare?
Boo frickin hoo.
I dare you to say that to a soldier.
Soon, Reid can stay home every weekend, and every day too.

Harry Reid, a man for all seasons? I won’t insult Thomas More…Harry Reid is a wolf in sheep’s clothing whose only purpose for being in Congress in to enrich himself. The guy is a black stain on the church he claims to be a member of. I really think this guy should remember to take his Prozac. How a guy like him can claim to be anti-abortion is beyond me.
“Our health care bill now before this body respects life,” Reid said in a nearly 20-minute address. “This bill is about access to health care, not access to abortions.”
“It is a decision that will bring hope to millions of Americans. I know there`s still a long ways to go with the legislation, but a large step has been taken by the majority leader today … and I admire the majority leader for doing it.”
“This 21st century economy holds great promise for our people. But unless we give all Americans the skills they need to succeed, countries like India and China will take good-paying jobs that should be ours.”
“There`s a lot we can do to improve American`s retirement security, but it`s wrong to replace the guaranteed benefit that Americans have earned with a guaranteed benefit cut of forty percent or more.”
“The President is off to a bad start. He owes the American people honest answers on whether he wants to reform Social Security or privatize it.”
“The American people do not like privatization. They are afraid of the debt the president`s willing to do. And they don`t like benefit cuts. And everyone here should understand all 45 Senate Democrats are united. We are not going to let this happen.”
“The American people do not like privatization. They are afraid of the debt the president`s willing to do. And they don`t like benefit cuts. And everyone here should understand all 45 Senate Democrats are united. We are not going to let this happen.”
“It`s time that America`s government lived by the same values as America`s families. It`s time we invested in America`s future and made sure our people have the skills to compete and thrive in a 21st century economy. That`s what Democrats believe.”
“I was born and raised in the high desert of Nevada in a tiny town called Searchlight. My dad was a hard rock miner. My mom took in wash. I grew up around people of strong values – even if they rarely talked about them.”
“Social Security is not in crisis. It’s a crisis the president’s created, period.”
“I think it is much easier to be a good member of the Church and a Democrat than a good member of the Church and a Republican.”
“No. I hope we don’t have to go to war. As I said, Tim, I’d rather dance than fight. But people have to understand that the president controls the White House, of course. The House of Representatives, the Senate–if he wants to get something done, he has to come to us. We are constitutionally empowered by the Constitution to have certain powers that are inherent in this body, and we want to work with the president. But they can’t jam things down our throats. The American people wouldn’t want us to do that.”
“Tim, we have in America today many, many states–I don’t know the exact number; I think 11 or 13 in this last election cycle–said there can no–in our state, you have to have marriage between a man and a woman. That’s the law in the state of Nevada. And within a couple years, even Massachusetts, that will be the law. And we in Congress recognized there would be some controversy over this, so we passed the Defense of Marriage Act that says you do not have to recognize the marriage laws of another state. That’s the law of the land. And I think that we have to be very, very careful about how we tamper with the Constitution. I have agreed reluctantly on several occasions to agree to constitutional amendments. But frankly, in the history of this country, there’ve been over 11,500 attempts to amend the Constitution, and I want to approach those amendments very, very cautiously. I do not think it’s necessary at this time to have a constitutional amendment in that regard.”
“The Iraq War is lost”
Hey Phil (Hisman) good to hear from you. I have missed your posts and understand you have been very busy. I wondered if you get time if you could post your speech on the devastating effects of abortion on men and women? I found it so spiritually enlightening and profound. God bless.
Here ya go ProLifer….Merry Christmas, Happy Jesus Christ’s Birthday…..Jesus Christ is Lord Forever, and Ever…..King of Kings and Lord of Lords….Amen
Abortion is an affront to the creative nature of God, it negates God as Creator,
Abortion denies the power of God to right a wrong, it negates God as Redeemer,
Abortion makes that which is good, the birth of human life, into that which is evil, the death of human life, and then calls it good, the very definition of blasphemy,
Abortion negates the resurrection power of God as it takes flesh that is alive in it’s earthly abode (the womb) and kills it, while God takes that flesh which is dead in it’s earthly abode (the grave) and desires to make it alive,
Abortion’s desire is to take that which was composed from the chaotic array of elemental molecules into a symphony of life infused with an eternal soul, and turn it back to the entropy of randomness, chaos, nothingness, uselessness.
Abortion is against all that is hopeful, all that requires faith for success; for it’s solution; annihilation, it’s goal; death, it’s dream; breaking God’s heart, it’s vision, Satan’s ultimate power.
Abortion is a counterfeit, for the clawprints of Satan are everywhere to be found in its performance;
Abortion disguises hate as love, bondage as freedom, choice as maturity, sin as righteousness, political correctness as wisdom,
Abortion pits men against women, mothers against their children, fathers against God, Yes, abortion is Satan’s feeble attempt at killing God Himself, for abortion is a metaphor for Satan; it is his coat of arms, his family crest, his logo, his brand, it belongs to him……for he laughs at its willing proponents as they craft their own self-destruction, mantled in self-deception.

Thank you so much for re-posting this awesome revelation from God. I have seen first-hand the devastation of abortion in family members who have bought the lies of Satan. I have seen the claw of Satan destroy their self-esteem, leaving them depressed and suicidal, feeling like they did not deserve to be treated with dignity and respect after destroying their babies. But I have seen God healing these post-abortive women as He began making them whole again. Any woman who reads this post by Phil and is contemplating aborting your baby, please don’t do it. The cost is too great. “Choose LIFE, that you and your seed may live”. Jesus said in John 10:10 “The thief comes not, but to steal and to KILL and to destroy but I am come that you might have LIFE and that more abundantly”. Save your life and the life of your precious, unborn baby. Jeremiah 29:11 says “I know the plans I have for you, says the Lord, plans to prosper you not to harm you (or for your destruction) but to give you a future and a hope”. “With God all things are possible”. Don’t give up contact the ministries listed on this website like Rachaels Vineyard or a pregnancy care center. There is help available. Phil, God bless you and your family, brother. We are indeed in a spiritual battle, but the good news is we will win this battle no matter what it looks like. “We are more than conquerers in Christ Jesus.
