Jihad, the 14th baby boy born to Elfi Yaghi, weighed in at 13 lbs. – deemed the heaviest baby born in Germany.
The term “Jihad” means “a holy war waged on behalf of Islam as a religious duty.”
I find the name appalling due to its definition, and I worry about the childrens’ upbringing if their mom gives one of her kids a name like that and leaves her gestational diabetes untreated – putting them all in medical danger. Your thoughts?

Depends – are they Islam, or are they terrorists? Muslims who want to fight for their religion are no different than Christians fighting for theirs.
I get upset when people tell me that I cannot put down other gods and cannot “push my religion” but then they try to do the same to me…
So, I can see why they would name their child this – unless they actually plan on going about hacking and slashing and physically fighting ;)
I wonder though – the name is extremely familiar to me – isn’t it a popular name among Islam believers?
Would people who find this name okay find the name “Crusade” offensive for a Christian child? If so, there’s a double standard.

To some extent, I suppose it depends. If this is a name the mother picked because she thought it sounded nice, then I suppose it doesn’t, ultimately, mean anything aside from somebody’s name in this context. Regardless of intent, it’s certainly not a name chosen in good taste. And it does make me sorry for that poor kid, who is going to be mocked mercilessly when he hits (the German equivalent of) middle school.
Now if she deliberately grooms him to be a suicide bomber, that would be something else again…

Sounds like they’re trying to keep up with the Duggars.
So help me I know of a case where a baby was named “vagina”. The mother heard it in the hospital and liked it so much no one could persaude her to change it.
I encountered another child who’s name was “LittleGrace”.
Then there were the siblings Hemmie, Femmie, Remmie, and Hector.
The imagination is the limit when it comes to names!

Then there was the mother who named her boys Eenie, Meenie, Mynie and Henry..

Well, we can hope she meant jihad as in “personal struggle” which is supposed to be another meaning for it. Then again, she’s in Germany, famous for a book called “Mein Kampf” (My Struggle) by one A. Hitler. :O
As a Christian who lives in the Arab world, it might be helpful to know that Jihad is actually a pretty common name and always has been. In some ways, it is like my name (which means “brave warrior”). I think the definition given in the post is too simplistic. Most people understand it as a personal battle against anything that would keep them from worshiping God (and thus not something necessarily directed at other people).
