Conversion stories II: Naaman
Naaman is a commenter on this site. Here is his story:
All of my life, I considered myself to be “pro-choice.” What choice did I have, really? I was raised in a feminist, pro-abortion, liberal family. Both my parents were members of the National Organization for Women. I grew up in NOW; I was committed. I attended every pro-abortion march or rally I could.
And I did something worse: I volunteered as an accessory to abortion.
There was an abortion clinic in Falls Church, VA, called the Commonwealth Women’s Center. Unfortunately for the clinic, it was right next door to a Catholic church. Eventually, the clinic became annoyed by the constant presence of pro-life protestors, and it sent a request for help to the local NOW chapters. We responded.
My specialty was “escort duty.” The idea was to have a number of sympathetic people escort the prospective patient from her car, across the parking lot, and into the clinic. Ideally, every escort detail was supposed to include a man or two….

More than anything else I did as a pro-abortion activist, that “escort duty” still haunts me. Most of the women I escorted were deeply upset. At the time, I assumed the pro-life protesters were the main cause of their distress, but now I know differently. In any case, I had direct, personal contact with troubled women who were carrying new life. Instead of offering them help or hope, I lured them into the mouth of a ravenous beast that devoured their children and spit the walking-wounded women back onto the street.
Fortunately, I drifted away from pro-abortion activism when I went to college. My views hadn’t changed, though.
On Good Friday 2001 the Holy Spirit moved within me, and I was led to a true faith in Christ. We left Quakerism and became Lutheran. We started to get involved with various evangelism classes and activities. The central message of our evangelism training was that everyone matters to God. Jesus died to redeem all of humanity, not just the people who look like us, act like us, or live near us. Every single human being is so loved by God that any one of us would have been enough to send His Son to the cross. It’s hard to accept that message and still support the legalized slaughter of God’s children.

That’s one part of my conversion. The other part came from being a father.
In 1999, my wife became pregnant with our first child. Early in the pregnancy, there were several bleeding scares. On every scare, our HMO insisted on bringing my wife in for an ultrasound. As a result, we got a good look at those early weeks of pregnancy. Also, the stress of the bleeding pulled me past any point of uncertainty about whether or not our unborn child was a “real” human being. Through God’s mercy, the bleeding all turned out to be nothing, and my son was born in 2000. Still, if God wanted to get my attention, He succeeded admirably.
Thus was I led from being a pro-abortion fanatic, hardened by a childhood of activism, into being one of those pro-lifers I used to hold in such contempt. How anyone can doubt the humanity of the unborn seems to be a mystery to me now. Of course unborn children are human! Even from a secular viewpoint, science tells us that “embryos” and “fetuses” are really just stages in human development.
The Christian perspective reinforces that human life is precious, even (or especially) within the womb. The Psalms sing about the womb as the starting point for faith, righteousness, and/or evil. In Psalm 139, the psalmist praises God for knowing him and forming him within his mother’s womb. The first chapters of Jeremiah and Luke both show us prophets who received their Godly commissions while still within the womb.

God is King of all Creation, but He still allows us to have our free will. By using that free will to kill untold millions of children, what sort of monstrous sin have we committed? All is not lost, as 1st John tells us, because we can confess our sins and receive forgiveness. But that same passage also tells us that if we attempt to deny our sins, we are calling God a liar and His Word will not be within us. In some ways, that is the worst crime of the pro-abortionmovement. As if killing millions of children wasn’t bad enough, they portray abortion as a sacred right.
Pro-abortion activists have led women and doctors into committing the grievous sin of infanticide and then deny them the possibility of forgiveness by denying that any sin was committed.

All of my life, I considered myself to be “pro-choice.” What choice did I have, really? I was raised in a feminist, pro-abortion, liberal family. Both my parents were members of the
Naaman, I commend you for leaving that business. God called you away from that mess. I’m sure it wasn’t easy for you because of your family. God bless you.
Wow. That is an amazing story!
I’m underwhelmed. In fact, it doesn’t make much sense. I’m not sure which I disbelieve, the assertion that you were once pro-choice or the over-the-top satire of religious devotion which sure rings false.
When HisMan does it, it’s a bit scary, but believable. With this guy…I think he’s pulling our leg.
glad you found L-I-F-E and know His Name ……
Naaman,
I am one of those “kooks” that stands outside of the clinic. Because we were being effective we now have a minimum of four escorts each week. Of course we call them “death”scorts.
Give me some pointers. These are some the saddest, angriest, meanest people I have ever come across.
They remind me of the “mean” girls at my school. They lie. They call the police weekly because we “stepped on the driveway”, “gave away literature”, “leaned a sign on public property.”
One time I was trying to talk to a couple that was visibly upset. They turned to listen and this women (she was over 70 mind you) started doing what I can only describe as a “Hokey Pokey” dance in front of them so that they couldn’t hear what we were saying.
These people are NOT for choice. These people are
for insanity…
Help me to understand where these people are coming from.
We pray for them, we offer them homemade cookies, bring them coffee, but nothing helps….
Maybe you can…
mk
MK, They sure do take things to extremes, don’t they? Power hungry lunatics.
The woman in red scares me. She looks ticked.
“gave away literature”
They can try to get you in trouble for giving out pamphlets on the public sidewalk??
That woman does look pissed.
Why do people find it so unbelievable that people can go from super pro-choice to super pro-life? People change when their eyes open to the reality of abortion.
Pro-choice rhetoric is very powerful. Most people in my generation have been fed subtle indoctrination our entire lives. We have never lived during a time when abortion was illegal. Because of this our views on the “right” are skewed. Once our eyes are open, many young adults realize that what they used to defend is an atrocity.
Naaman,
I love your heart.
I was one of the faithful NOW followers.
once was blind, but now i see…
thanks for sharing your story!
Naaman –
Thank you for your words. It took great strength to admit your failures and how you made them right.
No only do pro-aborts deny a sin was commited, they deny any regret a woman may feel as well. To me, this shows that there are not for woman’s rights. They are for selfish rights. Huge difference.
Again, thank you.
Valerie,correct!
I’ve got to agree with His Man. It’s for power.
Hal:
You can believe me or not. It’s up to you. But everything in that story is true….
—
MK:
You can’t reach an escort with arguments, logic, or any other kind of persuasion. Escorts are hardened. They’re not listening. They think you’re crazy, and they’ll ignore anything you say.
The best thing you can do is to pray for them. The Holy Spirit can work miracles in a human heart. The next best thing you can do is to simply be friendly and loving. Keep up with the coffee & cookies. Show them through your actions that pro-lifers aren’t the hateful, bigoted folks that they think we are.
And drop the term “deathscorts,” even in your own private conversations. You can’t speak kindness out of one side of your mouth and call names out of the other side. I know that you probably don’t think you’re doing anything wrong, but the little things matter. If you really want to reach out to clinic escorts (or anyone else, really), you have to be consistently respectful.
—
All others:
Thanks for the kind words and support. All of the credit should go to the Lord. He has led me through some strange paths, but He has also been a steadfast source of support through all of it.
God is good, all the time!
It is amazing how God can change a heart…..even the most hardened of hearts can be softened by God’s Spirit.
Thank you for your story, Naaman.
We have also seen that even abortionists can convert. Look at Bernard Nathanson. He admitted that he became very sick in his soul from performing abortions. He contemplated suicide. The Lord carried him out of darkness….Amen
MK,
Those escorts sound mean. =(
I think they’re just really paranoid about attacks on the people and the clinics, so they take it to the extreme.
Not the one who did the hokey pokey though. She’s just weird. I mean, if a couple wants to stop and listen, you should let them.
Valerie,
“…they deny any regret a woman may feel as well. To me, this shows that there are not for woman’s rights. They are for selfish rights. Huge difference.”
I call bullcrap on this, Val.
Naaman –
I am so inspired by your story, and I fully believe it, because I made the same pro-choice to pro-life “conversion” myself several years ago. Not due to this website, or any other, but due to my experiences with sub-par fertility (no worries, I have two lovely children now, but it was a long road that seems like just a bad dream now!) That experience made me understand in a very visceral way that that which pro-choicers “think” is under a woman’s (or a man’s) control – their reproductive capacity – really is *not* under our control at all. Pretending to control it by allowing the killing of defenseless humans at an early stage of life is simply lying to ourselves.
Once the door of this insight was opened in my heart, I was able to critically examine the carefully constructed card-house edifice of pro-choice logic, and the cards came tumbling down fairly quickly. Once my mind was opened, I began to realize the ridiculous mental gymnastics that one had to play in order to “justify” allowing abortion for any reason or none at all. The inconsistencies were so difficult to maintain; the truth of the pro-life position contained no such inconsistencies. It was possible to be honest and principled with this position. Like I said, once the door was open, it was so easy to accept – as if I knew it all along.
Now, I was never an active proponent of abortion, just a passive supporter of pro-choice policies. My family has always been pretty passivley pro-life as well, so I had nothing to “rebel” against, per se. Still, the switch was so refreshing to my mind and soul.
Around a year ago, after 20 years away, I also returned to my Catholic faith. So, it all fit together quite neatly. Like Namaan, I truly think God lead me to this newly found position. However, for those who don’t wish to talk about God, I can also say that, even without a return to the faith, I would still, now, be 100% pro-life.
BTW, websites such as this – including photos – only served to completely confirm that which I had recently come to believe was true and right.
That’s about it – keep up these conversion stories – they are awesome to read.
SK.
Stephanie –
Do you have any evidence that it is “bullcrap”? I find it funny that when someone questions the motivation behind Pro-Choice, they have nothing to defend themselves with. Just the word “Bullcrap”.
SK,
Welcome to the site. Thanks for your input. I hope you stick around and keep adding your insights. God Bless you and welcome back to the church as well.
Incredible, isn’t it, what you can see when you just “open your eyes”?
mk
Welcome SK!!!
SK –
Welcome! Last year I came back to the Catholic Church after about 15 years…
SK, great conversion story! Thanks for taking the time. I love them, too. Up next: SamanthaT!
Yes because cookies will pay the doctors bills and buy them a place to live. You gave them cookies yeah you sure did a lot.
Cameron,(Jill)
It’s so nice to see you. I was wondering if Jill kicked you off permanently or just temporarily.
I see you found a way to sneak through.
Nice name change. You know they say that imitation is the greatest form of flattery. Perhaps you’re lifelong dream is to one day be as awesome as “our Jill”…
mk
Actually, MK, this doesn’t appear to be Cameron, and I don’t think it’s me either. I think I was busy elsewhere when that comment was posted. Not positive.
Beautiful testimony, Naaman. God bless you.
I don’t know Jill. It sure sounds like him. Almost intelligent and then right into adolescence.
Makes no difference to me. Just think he should be man enough to use his own name.
People that use false names make me very leery.
I mean if you can’t be true to yourself who can you be true to?
MK wrote:

Ahem. I use a psuedonym, as do other bloggers and blog commenters. :)

Firstly, the cookies are for the escorts, who are usually volunteers. At least, I know I was a volunteer when I was an escort. That said, giving cookies to the clinic staff might also be a nice touch. However, delivering the cookies might require you to be on clinic property, which would be trespassing, which would not be a good idea.
Secondly, the point is not that cookies would pay anyone’s bills. As previously stated, the escorts are probably volunteers anyway. The cookies are a gesture of human kindness. It’s a small way to reach out to someone. There are other ways, sure. No need to limit ourselves to cookies.
SK,
Thanks for your own testimony. Your words were inspirational, and I have a lot in common with what you wrote.
Particularly:
Once my mind was opened, I began to realize the ridiculous mental gymnastics that one had to play in order to “justify” allowing abortion for any reason or none at all. The inconsistencies were so difficult to maintain; the truth of the pro-life position contained no such inconsistencies.
Yes, indeedy! I have found that my “past life” required a lot of mental gyrations, and that my current beliefs are much more straightforward. So much wasted effort to justify the unjustifiable….
It’s not that I don’t like to think. On the contrary, I quite enjoy thinking. It’s just that thinking is more satisfying when I have a solid logical foundation. In contrast, thinking is less satisfying when I have to devote a lot of mental energy to just keep from sinking into my own quicksand.
Naaman,
Perhaps I should elaborate. Cameron was banned from this site and is now trying to sneak back in by using Jill’s name.
Cameron might not be his “real” name but it is his name on this site.
What I meant was that he is hiding behind a new name.
If you came on this site tomorrow under the name Herman with no explanation and without letting us know who your really were I would be leery of you too.
A rose by any other name and all that…the point is, on this site, he has an identity that is accepted by all. You know who you are speaking to when you are speaking to mk or Naaman. Even if he is a troublemaker, he is “our” trouble maker and he shouldn’t be sneakin’ around causing his trouble. He should be doing it honestly.
In contrast, thinking is less satisfying when I have to devote a lot of mental energy to just keep from sinking into my own quicksand.
Actually, last week it was cranberry muffins. And the week before that it was helping one woman look for her lost earring (after asking permission to step on the grounds of course) and we found it.
Namaan is right. It’s about respecting each person as a child of God regardless of how misguided or influenced they might be.
One of the “escorts” (Good self control Naaman?)
took a cookie, though tentatively. To this I replied…Look, we may be on different sides of an issue, but we are all the same side of one thing…humanity. Then we ate our cookies.
It was a nice moment.
mk
OOps, sorry, that quote should have been…
The cookies are a gesture of human kindness. It’s a small way to reach out to someone. There are other ways, sure. No need to limit ourselves to cookies.
Hal,
So the truth scares you? It should, we all face Him someday.
Thank God Naaman saw the light before it was too late. Only the Holy Spirit could do this.
Lord have mercy on all of us.
“So much wasted effort to justify the unjustifiable….

Exactly! :)
“Do you have any evidence that it is “bullcrap”? I find it funny that when someone questions the motivation behind Pro-Choice, they have nothing to defend themselves with. Just the word “Bullcrap”.”
Valerie, do I need evidence? I posted that in response to your OPINION, thanks.
By the way, I could have said “bulls**t” but I figured it’d get deleted.
Stephanie:
This is my comment:
“No only do pro-aborts deny a sin was commited, they deny any regret a woman may feel as well. To me, this shows that there are not for woman’s rights. They are for selfish rights. Huge difference.”
And your only response was “bullcrap” (btw – I appreciate you not using the other word). see, the word Bull crap isn’t much of an argument. Usually when someone disagrees they will provide their opinion on the matter. This is called a debate. And debate is what we do.
So, I say Pro-choice denies a sin was commited. Which this is obvious or you wouldn’t be supporting abortion. I also say Pro-choice denies that woman have any regret. This is obvious in the denial of Post Abortion Syndrom.
So, why is my opinion BullCrap?
1) I and many others don’t believe in sin, and I don’t believe abortion is a sin. I believe that people can do stupid and evil things.
2) Pro-choice denies that ALL women have regret. They also deny that Post Abortion Syndrom exists because there is not enough evidence that shows this. Some studies find no evidence of PAS, some find it as only a rare occurence. I’d certainly like to see more research done on this, though.
3) I don’t see how PAS should have any bearing on whether or not abortion should be legal.
4) Pro-choice is all about women’s rights. A woman has control over her reproductive health and regains body autonomy. This is not a selfish right or whatever name you have given it.
Anything I miss?
Stephanie,
Actually, you just agreed with Valerie.
You don’t believe in sin, so you don’t admit that abortion is sin.
You say you believe in evil, but a woman’s right to bodily autonomy does not qualify as an evil, even if it means the death of another human being.
You say studies don’t prove PAS, so you won’t believe it till more studies are done, and yet thousands of women are telling you that they have PAS. If they are right and thousands upon thousands more women are also suffering from PAS, or will at a later date, but you still don’t think that this is a reason to end abortion, then not only don’t you care about the babies welfare, you also don’t care about the women.
This to people like Valerie, Bethany, Jasper, Jill, Samantha, PIP, HisMan, John, Heather, Lauren and millions more, is considered…SELFISH. As in putting your own needs above others…and feeling no remorse.
Again, psychopathic behavior.
mk
Selfish (Self”ish) (?), a.
1. Caring supremely or unduly for one’s self; regarding one’s own comfort, advantage, etc., in disregard, or at the expense, of those of others. “They judge of things according to their own private appetites and selfish passions.” Cudworth. “In that throng of selfish hearts untrue.” Keble.
2. (Ethics) Believing or teaching that the chief motives of human action are derived from gratifying one’s own pleasure. “Hobbes and the selfish school of philosophers.” Fleming.
Thanks MK – I couldn’t have said it better.
I also want to add something that I’ve said before but is worth repeating.
I have AD/HD-I. When I was in high school I was told by a professional that I do not have a learning disability. He said that I wasn’t applying myself and I was lazy. 15 years later the psychiatric community discovered this little unknown element to AD/HD. It is call Inactive. Hence the -I. Did this inactive form not exist until it was recognized by the psychiatric community? Did I miraculously develop the inactive form when I didn’t have it before? Or was the psychiatric community WRONG? They did hundreds of thousands of test back in the 1980’s. Nope, no such thing as an inactive form. No wait – now that we are in the 1990’s; oh.. yes, there is such a thing.
Get it?
oh – Another example. Being on HRT (hormone replacement therapy) was a good thing for menopausal women. Oops..no its not..it causes breast cancer. Women on HRT were advised to slowly go off their meds to protect them from cancer. Wait a minute, some women are committing suicide. Oops again, it doesn’t cause as much breast cancer as originally thought, so it isn’t that big of a deal. Really? Tell my Mother it isn’t a big deal. You will have to go to St. Joseph’s cemetary in Columbus Ohio for that.
Medicine knows CRAP! Psychology knows even less! Women are in pain. Pro-choice ignores this pain because “proper tests have shown it doesn’t exist”. How many times have we heard that before?
Jill,
Have you considered including conversion stories from former abortion providers? I’m thinking about the testimonies that I’ve read on the Priests for Life website, which I’m sure you’re more than familiar with. It was immensely riveting to read these stories from the folks in the trenches who actually performed the “choice” being made as opposed to those who agree with pro-choice rhetoric strictly on an intellectual level.
BTW, I’ve been to some of the other pro-life blogs you feature on your blogspot, and I’ve gotta tell you, yours (along with the cast of characters that duke it out) are about the sharpest I’ve come across!
Don’t stop…
Carder, Why thank you, kind Sir or Madame! I’m extremely thankful for that cast of characters. I couldn’t do this without them. Their wit, diligence, wisdom, passion, and knowledge are awesome.
As for getting conversion stories from former abortionists, that day may come but for now the stories are coming from converts here, on this site.
For more stories on converted abortionists and clinic workers, please visit The Pro-life Action League web site. They have some great stories to share about the abortion industry.
“Pro-choice is all about women’s rights. A woman has control over her reproductive health and regains body autonomy. This is not a selfish right or whatever name you have given it.”
By definition it’s selfish. You just used the word “autonomy.” Since when did autonomy become an indicator of philanthropy or communal connectivity?
What’s wrong with being selfish?
It’s okay to look out for yourself, but you’ll feel better when you aren’t selfish. SoMg,Try it sometime.
Hahaha
I love that picture of the pro-choice activist at the bottom, brilliant! Pro-choice, and according to the T-shirt a feminist, and quite obviously able to speak Russian, which the New Right I guess equates with Communism. The personification of New Right Populist biggest fears all in one, as to not leave any doubt about the evilness of pro-choice activists!
SOMG,
What’s wrong with being selfish?
Posted by: SoMG at May 5, 2007 02:13 PM
It would be easier to answer:
What’s right with being selfish?
Joe, Who likes abortion? Answer: Irresponsible men.
Stephanie stepped in with:
1) I and many others don’t believe in sin, and I don’t believe abortion is a sin. I believe that people can do stupid and evil things.
Bzzzt, wrong! You just contradicted yourself.
Sin = Evil. If a person does a “stupid and evil thing,” that person has just sinned.
Naaman,
Sin is a religious term. To you, sin and evil are synonomous, but they aren’t to me. So no, I did not contradict myself.
