Elvis, Andy, and me

Reading about Candy Darling and the whole Warhol scene this morning inspired me to show you a little of my world.
I’m fascinated by the behavor and psyche of certain pop icons, two of whom are Elvis Presley and Andy Warhol.
I don’t care so much for Elvis’ music, but that he shot out t.v.s and became interested in Priscilla when she was only 14 intrigues me.
Same with Warhol. How does someone come up with the idea to shoot a movie of a person sleeping for eight hours – and sell it? And the subject of his art: Campbell’s Soup cans? And do you know how Warhol died? Bizarre story involving a negligent nurse.
So I bought a screen print of Warhol’s Elvis from Love Me Tender. Let me back up and remind you I’m an eclectic, perhaps eccentric, decorator. Recall I have a statue of St. Lucy holding a plate of eyeballs down by my fireplace.
So I framed this Warhol print and hung it at our downstairs landing on top of a fireplace screen we never used. The print hangs next to Marianne the manniquin, who is wearing a ’40s dress I found in a thrift shop. There are photos of our two married sons and their wives and our daughter on the half table (only has two legs) I found outside a salvage warehouse. And to top all that, a painter recently told me I hung my wallpaper upside down. I’m like, oh, well, it works!
Anyway, welcome to my world…. :)

How funny! I haven’t been able to get on here for days and the first chance I get this is what you have posted! I LOVE it!!!!
In my house nothing matches. I just love garage sales too much for things to match!
;-)
Does anybody besides me remember the day when the king died? 30 yrs ago 1977, aug17th…

Elvis had 14 different drugs in him when he died. The list of what they found at autopsy was:
Codeine – Morphine – Quaaludes – Valium – Diazepam – Placidyl – Amytal – Nembutal – Carbrital – Demerol – Sinutab – Elavil – Avental – Valmid
I’ve been a fan of Andy Warhol since I was in elementary school, I absolutely LOVED that he used to make silkscreen paintings of soup cans! Though my tastes have changed, and I do prefer Salvador Dali more at this point, and more cartoony styled drawings, I still enjoy looking at Warhol’s stuff every once and awhile.
Warhol was cool!
Yes, the guy was fascinating. Have you heard of the Shot Marilyns? This was a stack of his Marilyn Monroes leaning against a wall the day a woman came in to the Factory and shot him and put a hole through the stack. Worth more just because of that.
I thought the “Shot Marilyns” were a punk band or something, tee-hee.
I knew he had been shot by some crazy feminazi from SCUM (which I have to say, is a very funny acronym…creepy, but funny).
Wheeeeeeeeee, I haven’t slept more than 3 hours in the past two days. How lovely. :)
How interesting!!
“Wheeeeeeeeee, I haven’t slept more than 3 hours in the past two days. How lovely. :)”
Don’t (try) to go to sleep…., play a little reverse phys. I you can’t get to sleep after lying down for 20minutes, don’t stay in the bed and toss and turn, get up. Then try again 30 minutes later. try to some excersize during the day…
OK, random trivia o’ Lauren. I don’t know where the heck 10 years went, but my cousin designed all the 20th year anniversary stuff. It was pretty cutting edge back then.
I’m seriously amazed that it has been 10 years since he did all of that. It seems like 2.
Oh Jasper, it’s not insomnia! :) I worked an overnight shift at my new job, and I would have gone to sleep longer had I not had an appointment at 11 AM (I don’t get home from Minneapolis until 8 or so and I needed to be up by 10:15).
well thats good Rae…
I wasn’t a huge Elvis fan, being more of a rocker, but the guy could sing. A real shame the way he ended up.

Oh, Oh, I forgot to add my other bit of Elvis/family trivia.
My grandfather ran a dance hall. He had a mildy successful band (one he no doubt thougt more successful than was the reality).
One day, his younger cousin approached him about joining a band with him and his friend. My grandpa brushed him off and told him he didn’t play with kids.
And of course, who was that kid? Elivs Presley.
This is what my in-laws call choosing grapey.
wow, thats pretty neat Lauren..!
Hey, everyone! Miss me?
:)
Yes Heather B. I must have talked you up. I just changed to Heather!!! LOL! Missed you much!!
@ Rae, I was driving a long distance trip once. I was soooo sleepy, and I began to hallucinate. I hit my car breaks hard, because I thought I saw a cheetah dart into the road. Scary! Nothing there, of course.
Rae, are you working midnights permanently now? I used to. You either love midnights or you hate them. I loved them. But fyi, my circadian rhythm was permanently altered. Hence, here I am at 3:30a… :)
Lauren,
Choosing Grapey. You told me what that meant once and I forgot!
Basically the grapey story goes like this.
There was a man who manufactured two types of soda in his small factory. One day a developer came to him, remarked on his sucess and told him he wanted to expand marketing on one of his products. The man thought about it and said…”Hmm I think we’ll go with Grapey”.
Have you heard of Grapey?
No?
Well you’ve probably heard of the other product.
Good ‘ol fasioned…coke.
“Yes Heather B. I must have talked you up. I just changed to Heather!!! LOL! Missed you much!!”
I must admit that I’ve missed you all, too. I’ve just been so ridiculously busy with work. How are things?
Lauren-
I’m afraid of waking Oliver during his nap.
