Juno nominated for Golden Globe
The pro-life themed movie Juno, which opens Christmas Day and which I’ve favorably reviewed, was nominated this morning for a Golden Globe. According to the Associated Press:
Nominated for best comedy or musical along with Charlie Wilson’s War were the Beatles musical Across the Universe, the Broadway adaptation Hairspray, the teen-pregnancy comedy Juno and the bloody musical Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street.
Star Ellen Page was also nominated for Best Actress, Musical or Comedy, and stripper turned blogger turned writer Diablo Cody for Best Screenwriter.

Jill Stanek is a nurse turned speaker, columnist and blogger, a national figure in the effort to protect both preborn and postborn innocent human life.
What I find amusing is the fact a couple of weeks ago on this very blog is was preached that women should keep their babies and not place them up for adoption. That mothers should try everything in their power to keep the child. Now you are promoting a movie where Juno places her child up for adoption. Now I haven’t seen the movie, perhaps Juno decides to keep the child. I am not sure. I do plan to see the movie. It looks cute.
The movie is not anti-choice. The girl chooses to gestate. Big deal. But the movie is touted as being quite amusing.
I am still confused at why so many people on here liked the movie Knocked Up. I loved that movie but it was full of drugs and sex. And a lot of other things Christians usually disagree with. I thought it was hilarious!

Maybe the PTSD her parents inflicted upon her has lots to do with this.

No…. I think Jill’s point was that we should not pressure women to give their babies up, just because it’s one alternative to abortion. She was trying to make the point that there is another alternative which is the best alternative..and that is, keeping the child. Mothers and their own children are naturally meant to be together.
However, adoption is the next best thing, if the woman does not want to keep the child.
Jill certainly is not against adoption. If choosing between adoption or abortion, I’m pretty sure I know what her choice would be.

I don’t think that the point of Jill’s posts about the movies is that they are perfect, by any stretch of the imagination. It is that they are life affirming. And that is a very positive thing. :)

JM, what would make you say that? We believe that all mothers should have the right to choose the life they want to live with their own families. Do you not realize how much pressure a mother can sometimes go through, when deciding to adopt her child out? If not, start working at a pregnancy center and start talking to some of the teens who come in.
Jill was not at all advocating forcing mothers to keep their children, if they want to place them for adoption, nor would she ever. Where do you get that from what she said?
What she was saying, was that if a mother wants to keep her child, even if it is a young mother, she should be given the opportunity to do that, without feeling pressured to adopt out.
How do you go from a motive of trying to prevent a mother from feeling pressured to do something she doesn’t want to do, to a motive of trying to force a woman to do something she doesn’t want to do?
Abortion is the same thing. We don’t think that unborn children should be forced to die. We would rather see them ALIVE and in ANY home, than dead and unloved. Abortion does not involve only a mother. It involves a mother and a child…which is the whole reason we are involved.
Sad, but a woman I know just aborted about 3 months ago. She already has a son who is bi-racial. She is white and the father is black. She had become pregnant again from another black man. She chose to have an abortion. Her exact words were, “My parents will kill me if I have another mixed baby.”….Prior to the abortion, her mom had a change of heart. I also pleaded with her to reconsider. She did it anyway. It made me sad.

By making abortion illegal you are FORCING many women to do something she doesn’t want to do. Carry the child to term. Do some women feel pressured to abort, yes I’m sure there are. But there are also some that don’t feel pressure as well.
I’m sure every person who decides to place their child up for adoption goes through a period where they just aren’t sure, or they are scared. etc. So yes, lets help those women. But don’t sit and try and talk them out of placing their child up for adoption.
AB Laura, she is so good with her son. I just don’t understand. She called me as soon as she found out about her pregnancy. She was crying and hysterical. I tried to console her as she repeated “I can’t do this.” My response was “Of course you can.” “You have done it before.” We spoke several times before she had the procedure. Sometimes, all we can do is try.
Actually pro lifers believe in choices too. We aren’t anti choice. Adoption is an option.
I find it strange that Heather knows about a dozen women who have had abortions. I don’t know a single one.

Most of Heather’s friends have 2-3 abortions a week. It turns out that if you hold your nose when you sneeze, you ovulate.

No. Perhaps some of the people I know have had them but never talk about it.
JM, A lot of the women I have told you about are not “friends.” Some are. Some have been acquaintances, co-workers, neighbors, etc. I am actually an excellent listener, so perhaps that’s why some women feel comfortable opening up to me. I honestly DO know a woman who is sterile after 7 abortions. I also know a woman who did have 9 of them. What’s the big deal? It’s just a choice. It was actually the stories from these post abortive women that helped me to become pro life.

Yes, I have been back in MN for about a month now. A total of five teachers have left the school I worked at, myself included.
JM, I can’t really explain it to you, but I have always just felt that abortion was wrong. Nobody ever had to tell me so. It was just a feeling. So, when I began to meet women who talked about their abortion[s] like a walk in the park, it began to bother me.

That’s why we never introduced my dad’s mom to my daughter and she is dead now..cause my daughter is half-black and my grandma is racist from what I understand. I have actually experienced more prejudice from black people because my daughter is half-black ironically. Oh well what are ya gonna do?

I was with my boyfriend up until monday. I applied for jobs both by him and by my parents. I ended up getting a job by my parents. He’s only 130 miles away now. Which is a lot better than 1800 miles. I’ll see him on weekends and he might come to my house for christmas eve then go to his parents the next day

Heather, this is one you were upset about a few months back, correct?. God, that’s sad. Her son could’ve had a baby brother to play with. We live in a sick world.
Elizabeth, my friend gets them too. She’s told me about it. Get this, I know a couple who have 7 children. They are extremely PL! “Judy” was telling me about a recent trip to the grocery store. She had all of her children in tow. She received so many dirty looks, and some lady even approached and said, “Get your tubes tied.” The nerve! Some people look at children as a curse.

I also blame a lot of this on society. Everyone puts education first. Women feel pressured into abortions in order to “finish school.” It’s a sad message to send.

Ahhhhh, Elizabeth, I totally identify with being a broadway chick. I am in the same boat. I thought Juno looked funny, though I didn’t get the chance to see it, though I can’t really imagine that it was better than Hairspray, which is probably the best musical adaptation I’ve ever seen, or Across the Universe, which was phenomenal, or Sweeney Todd, which is probably the most amazing thing Sondheim ever touched, which is saying a lot considering how I worship that man.
Also, Taye Diggs is GORGEOUS. He and Idina need to start making some babies. Those would be some FINE looking babies. With incredible voices. *shudder* AMAZING.

I’ve never seen sweeny todd in real life but when I saw the commercials it looked…odd. Like Depp’s voice and the music went together weird or something. I’m not quite sure I can explain it.

PIP, it’s a Sondheim, which explains a lot. His work is generally rather dark, but incredibly beautiful. The entire story of Sweeney Todd is twisted, but in a way where you can’t really tell who you should be encouraging. Sondheim does a ton of work on the gray areas between our perception of evil and actual evil. Into the Woods was a fantastic example of that too. Just…absolutely stunning. Music and stories like that can open up entire new perspectives. And this is why I am such a mighty theatre geek.
Also, for any of those people on here who might see the title of Sweeney Todd and flip out (ZOMG, HE’S A DEMON!), he is not actually a demon. He’s a barber who was wrongfully imprisoned by a corrupt government official who wants his daughter. Sweeney breaks out years later, comes back to find his daughter held hostage by the same man, and his wife gone. He then goes on a streak of revenge killings. Erm…and the lady who lives downstairs makes the people into pies. Which is kinda creepy. But…yeah. He’s not a demon. In fact, I think Ms. Lovett is a more creepy character.

Elizabeth- LOL. Kind of an interesting choice for Christmas. I thought Juno would be out on Christmas but I am not sure it is showing here where I live and I think STL will be showing in January :(
A lot of the other christmas movies look so lame!
PIP- I’d recommend seeing just about any film adaptation of a musical on the actual stage first, just because I consider it an unparalleled experience. Depp has a good voice- he was in a band before he became such a famous actor- and he’s not bad as Sweeney, from the clips I’ve found on YouTube. He does a lot of alterations to the original style of Sweeney’s voice to compensate for some of his lack of classical ability, but it still looks pretty neat. The cinematography, at the very least, is going to be dynamite!

Well, in answer to your question, no. Your question really doesn’t even make sense. I mean, suppose infanticide were legal, and we were fighting to make it illegal (note: would we be “forcing” mothers not to kill their infant children?), our “next step” wouldn’t be to force them and other women to keep their children as opposed to adopting them out. That is kind of absurd line of thought, don’t you think?

Oh good grief, JM. When we have laws to prevent rape and murder, are we “forcing” people not to rape and murder? I wouldn’t say we’re forcing them not to rape and murder, we are telling them that there will be a penalty if they decide to do it, and we are trying to deter them from doing it, in order to protect innocent life!
We are protecting the innocent from harm, as much as is within our power to do. Why do you feel that we should not want to protect the innocent unborn from death, simply because their mother may not want them? Which is worse, loss of temporary convenience or loss of life itself?
