Most in the Evangelical world are familiar with Joni Eareckson Tada’s story. Not sure if she’s so well known in Catholic circles.
Joni was left a teen quadriplegic in 1967 after a diving accident. Her 1976 book, Joni, really impacted me.

What a beautiful heart Joni has! The Outreach videos are amazing, this is truly a very special ministry. There is a severely crippled woman on the Kenya video who has to walk on her hands and feet in the dirt until she is provided with a special walker that allows her to stand upright. Her smile is priceless.

I consider myself a fairly well-informed Catholic, but I haven’t heard of her. I’m glad you’ve told us about her, though. She sounds like a wonderful woman.

I’m Catholic, and I remember reading her book (or a book about her) as a child. She’s the one who became quadriplegic after a diving accident, then learned to paint with her teeth, right?
Nonetheless, I didn’t learn about her at church or CCD or anything…. just from the summer reading list at the public library, I think. I loved that book!
Oh, Joni has been an inspiration to me since I was a little girl!
Joni,has been an inspiration to me and millions of others. She has been on the forefront fighting against the euthanasia (sp?)movement and fought against Terri Schivao’s death sentence by dehydration inflicted by her adulterous husband. Has anyone forgot how the Democrats ridiculed pro-lifers and then Gov. Jeb Bush for fighting for Terri’s life. How did they ever let an adulterous husband and his mistress decide the fate of this woman, when her parents begged him to divorce their daughter and said they would take care of her? Talk about our country promoting a “culture of death”, unless you happen to be a “chosen, wanted one”. God help our nation. I know this is a little off topic but seeing Joni reminded me of Terri.
