MSM quotes of the year
Jasper posted a link to Media Research Center’s Best Notable Quotes of 2008, and I just had to peruse them for laughs.
I totally concur with the Quote of the Year by Chris Matthews:
Co-anchor Chris Matthews: “I have to tell you, you know, it’s part of reporting this case, this election, the feeling most people get when they hear Barack Obama’s speech. My — I felt this thrill going up my leg. I mean, I don’t have that too often.”
Co-anchor Keith Olbermann: “Steady.”
Matthews: “No, seriously. It’s a dramatic event. He speaks about America in a way that has nothing to do with politics. It has to do with the feeling we have about our country. And that is an objective assessment.”
— Exchange during MSNBC’s coverage of the VA, MD and D.C. primaries, February 12
Ah, so many great ones! Here was a runner-up for the Good Morning Morons award…
Reporter Jeff Glor: “In addition to enjoying basketball and cycling during down time, Obama loves to play Scrabble….Obama’s job as a teenager was at a Baskin-Robbins, and to this day he does not like ice cream….”
Co-host Julie Chen: “Okay, so after doing this story, what’s the takeaway?”
Glor: “I mean, I think this is a man who plays to win. No matter what it is, whether it’s the woman he wants to date or elected office or board games, there is an ambition there. There is a determination.”
Chen: “Sounds like presidential qualities.”
— From “The Five Things You Should Know” about Barack Obama on CBS’s The Early Show, June 18
Here’s another good one, runner-up for the Irrelevant Reverend Wright Award:
“At issue now, a video of a sermon given by Barack Obama’s minister at the Trinity United Church of Christ in Chicago….We’re running it because — like it or not, legitimate or not — it has become an issue….All this seems to have nothing to do with actual issues that the country is facing, which these candidates should be talking about and we probably should be talking about.”
— CNN’s Anderson Cooper introducing a story about inflammatory comments made by Rev. Jeremiah Wright, Anderson Cooper 360, March 13

Wow. That’s all I can say.
Did you see the articles yesterday on Yahoo about Obama’s “Island Retreat” and also “OMG it’s OBAMA without a a shirt on!!!SWOON”
The Cooper clip is the best of the three.
Introducing news as “like it or not, legitimate or not” says it all. Yea… great… because everything else CNN chooses to show is stuff we “like” to see.
Gee, thanks Coop. You’re swell. Tell me again how much Palin’s clothes are?

Do you really think just throwing money at the economic problems is the answer? Up to a trillion dollars? I really believe things could get much much worse with Liberals in charge. This “fantastic” guy of yours has terrible policies, not just on abortion.
How about lower taxes and less government spending to stimulate the economy?
Something I know Liberals find impossible to understand.
Joanne, I think Obama said it best:
“Two years from now, I want the American people to be able to say, “Government’s not perfect; there are some things Obama does that get on my nerves. But you know what? I feel like the government’s working for me. I feel like it’s accountable. I feel like it’s transparent. I feel that I am well informed about what government actions are being taken. I feel that this is a President and an Administration that admits when it makes mistakes and adapts itself to new information, that believes in making decisions based on facts and on science as opposed to what is politically expedient.” Those are some of the intangibles that I hope people two years from now can claim,” – Barack Obama, president-elect.
Hal, Obama is incapable of admitting to a mistake. Ask him about the Surge in Iraq.
Obama won’t take my calls. You ask him.
Hal,
Ronald Reagan used to say that government isnt the solution, government is the problem. I cant remember exactly his words but that is basically it.
And that is where conservatives and liberals are different.
The liberal media shows people as victims when it comes to the economy. We are helpless to do anything about the crisis. And we arent to blame either.
Although we have no personal control over what happens with the economy, we do have control over how we react and what we personally do about our future.
I’ve said before…. with OBama’s economic policies things will get much worse, not better. However, that doesnt mean things will get worse for me personally. Some will still prosper in 2009 and beyond.
However those expecting OBama to fix everything are almost certain to be disappointed.
That is putting it mildly!
Hey, if things get much worse, I guess we all have to just do a better job of taking care of our own lives. Do I have that right?
Has anybody heard of the band Celtic women?

Whether things get better or worse, we need to take care of our own lives, and not expect the government to do so.
That is one of the complaints I have about Liberals. They think it is the government’s duty to look after them, provide programs to help them, etc.
Joanna,
Youre right in that regard. From my limited experience, I have noticed that those who believe the government should be assisting them, are those that feel work is entitled to them. Those that are opposed to the government acting as a support system are those who make their own path and support themselves. The problem is that one system punishes the other. A system that helps out those who wont help themselves is a punishment to those that DO help themselves because it cheapens their hard work. A system that doesnt help those who wont help themselves obviously punishes those people. The question should be, who deserves to be punished the most? Those who make their own path, or those that dont? In my experience, the highly motivated are the ones who come to work on time and do a good job. The employees who expect hand outs are the employees who call in sick, come to work late, and ultimately perform poorly. Of course, this is only derived from my limited observations; 5 jobs, mostly “blue-collar” or manual labour orientated.
I remember how hard it was to explain to my hardest working employees why they had to receive equal raises to my employees who skipped work and came in late. Even harder still was explaining why those lazy seniority employees had claim to the most hours and the best schedules, despite their lack of a work ethic.
Thank you, Hal, for introducing the notion of being “blessed.” Indeed we are blessed, but incredibly there are those who do not want to share our blessings with the tiniest and most defenseless of our brothers and sisters. Day in and day out thousands of innocent human lives are ended violently, and yet many defend this as a “right.”
What kind of a people are we that we would kill off 50 million of our children and then celebrate the election of someone who has promised, if given a chance, to sign legislation that would end successful efforts to reduce those numbers? But this is exactly what Obama has said he would do, even as he claims that he will work to reduce abortions.
any evidence Jerry that there have been “successful efforts” to reduce the number of abortions?
Anyway, I feel blessed that Obama is our next president. Sends a tingle up my leg and everything!

LOL, At least Fox presents both the liberal and conservative perspective but in the end the facts more often than not are presented by those who are conservative.
Actually, I read The National Review, Josephine, you should give it a read sometime.
Eileen, Fox not only taunted their only liberal… he’s gone.
There’s a taste of some of the great things the other at Fox said to/about Colmes, too…
I’m not saying that Fox lies. Not at all, but they present the facts how conservatives want to see the facts. I know CNN does too, but they do it the way I like. :)
I have read the National Review Online, and… well, you surely realize it isn’t unbiased. It’s kind of impossible for anything to show a bias.
They also interview Liberals on Fox news. Many times the different hosts interview liberal and conservative pundits at the same time. Someone has the information that is most accurate (the facts) and it is usually the conservative. It is not impossible to show bias. Either journalists do their research and present the truth; information that can be traced and verified to be proven accurate and truthful, or they do not.
Come on Josephine, you want us to listen to Jon Stewart yet you have refused to listen to Rush Limbaugh?
It is from the Jon Stewart’s show, but the clips he shows are all from Fox News… I don’t care if you listen to his commentary. :)
” Someone has the information that is most accurate (the facts) and it is usually the conservative. ”
BIASSS. You can’t even write a post without showing bias…!
You’re kidding right?! I mean, c’mon. I watch Fox news (mainly for s*$@ and giggles),… and, WOW. I’ve never seen a correspondent EVER attack a conservative. I continually seeing liberals get ripped apart and not even getting a chance to get a word in edgewise.
2008 was the year that the mainstream media committed suicide.
I gotta laugh whenever someone says ANY media station is unbiased. It simply isn’t true. My grandmother prefers to watch Fox. She considers herself an independent (though she would likely be considered as a member of the Right. I don’t think she’s voted for a Democrat in years.)and thinks they put on a great show of the news. However even she recognizes, and admits, it is conservative, just as I recognize CNN (aside from Lou Dobbs) is liberal. It’s just how it goes.
Aside from Sean Hannity, liberals are treated much more politely than conservatives are on CNN.
As for Jon Stewart — he hosts a comedy show — not a real news show.
Dan, Fox is conservative, no doubt, but when it comes down to presenting facts, I think that conservatives present them more honestly than liberals.
Eileen, did you even see what I wrote? The only reason I posted Jon Stewart was because he had a collage of people on Fox being jerks to Colmes. Not so I could show you some hard hitting news. I already said that.
And, I basically just have to LOL at your last comment. I mean, seriously. How can you actually believe that?
Because, Josephine, believe it or not there are people of integrity in the journalistic sphere who are dedicated to honestly reporting the facts. It seems to me that more often than not conservatives are more reliable when it comes to factual reporting. Bias and distortion of the facts are much more evident among liberal journalists.
Say, Josephine, could you try to be a little less condescending? :)
“Bias and distortion of the facts are much more evident among liberal journalists.”
You say that like it’s a fact. It’s not. It’s your opinion, and it’s probably only your opinion because you’re a conservative. My opinion of all conservative media is that it’s bias and distortion is much worse than anywhere else.
Eileen, if you’d be fair, I’d stop being condescending. I guess we both have to do what works for us, huh? :)
So in other words, it is okay for you to be rude in a disagreement since only your “opinion” is right?
ASNE Journalism Credibility Project, 1998
As part of “a $1 million project to improve the credibility of newspapers and journalism,” the
American Society of Newspaper Editors commissioned a poll of 3,000 Americans in April and
May of 1998. The survey found that more than three-fourths of Americans (78%) believed that the
press is biased, and an equal percentage believed that reporters would “spike or spin” a story to
suit powerful interests. The findings were detailed in a 1999 report, Examining Our Credibility:
Perspectives of the Public and the Press.
Say what you will about conservatives, Josephine, but you can trace their facts back to the source and they don’t distort facts to suit their agenda or deliberately ignore some news because again, it doesn’t suit their agenda.
And it’s okay for you to pretty much just lie to win an argument?!

BTW, I laughed out loud about “Say what you will about conservatives, Josephine, but you can trace their facts back to the source and they don’t distort facts to suit their agenda or deliberately ignore some news because again, it doesn’t suit their agenda.”
Are you kidding!? Do you HONESTLY believe that? If so, I don’t think I can ever address you again, because that’s the most ridiculous BS I’ve ever read.
