Carlton Veazey from the Religious Coaltion for Reproductive Choice claims the Stupak amendment is “an encroachment on the separation of religion and state and an affront to a basic constitutional principle.”
Senator Tom Harkin thinks it’s a slippery slope which could lead to the federal government not allowing people with federal housing loans to have abortions….
And in a guest post at the RH Reality Check, Robin Marty thinks the Stupak amendment will prevent women who’ve experienced miscarriages from having their dead children removed.
Ultimately, the biggest problem with nationalizing health care (let’s not kid ourselves, that’s what these bills do, and that’s the objective) is that it pits Americans against one another. The pro-choicers have just learned a bitter lesson (well, actually, they received a lesson, but I don’t think they learned it), which is that they may not get to control the benefit packages. This will be true everywhere, though.
Under nationalized care, you want my grandmother to die (or at least we can say that you will benefit if my grandmother dies, and desires tend to follow incentives), because your costs go up if she’s kept alive with expensive care. That other guy wants your baby to die (or be aborted – will Catholic Bishops learn the true lesson of their triumph this week when they have to decide on the final bill?) rather than live with birth abnormalities that require expensive health care.
The reality of human nature, noted by Adam Smith more than 200 years ago, is that we take a prick on our own finger much more seriously than the deaths of thousands halfway across the world. The reality of government health care is that people will want theirs from the common pot, and they will vote to get it, whatever it does to their neighbors.

“Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.”
–U.S. CONSTITUTION, Amendment 1, Freedom of Religion, Press
The bishops had a constitutional right to exercise their free speech and to take their concerns to legislators, Mr Veazey.
Senator Tom Harkin (D-IA) is supposedly a Catholic but has received a 100 percent rating from NARAL since 2003 and voted against the ban on late-term abortion and the Stupak Amendment. It’s time for his bishop to call him out on his pro-abortion stance.
Oy, I hear that this Stupak Amendment is going to officially replace the pumpkin with watermelon as the official food stuff of the autumn season. Yup.
Anyone caught with a pumpkin will be hauled off to jail immediately. Watermelons, people, watermelons.
FYI, Jill posted a great response to Robin Marty’s “RH Reality Check” article.
Click on Robin Marty’s name above to get to it.
yup, that’s right, women who have miscarried are done for.
No getting rid of that baby for you.
This just makes me want to scream. :(
It’s hard to have a debate with people who lie, obfuscate and who are intellectually dishonest ALL THE TIME.
Somebody needs to point out on that Realitycheck blog that the bill reads: “…including life-endangering physical conditions caused by or arising from the pregnancy itself…” which would include removing a dead fetus after a miscarriage. The Stupak bill does NOT eliminate insurance coverage for a D&C after a spontaneous abortion.
I would myself, but I don’t want to have to register…
From a different angle…
Wouldn’t forcing Federally-funded abortion on the faithful be a violation of “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, OR PROHIBITING THE FREE EXRECISE THEREOF” ??
It seems like the pro-aborts are flailing about looking for a bad guy to hang this on. Is it Stupak? Is it the Bishops? We know there has to be some nefarious character out there that is soooo bad!
Actually, it is the majority of Americans who are to blame. We are the ones sending millions of letters and emails to our congressmen and women and have stormed the halls of congress with petitions, personal visits and phone calls. We are the movement with energy and ascendancy. The pro-abortion movement which was built upon the radical bra burning feminism of the 60’s and which is ingrained into academia, has long since leveled off and is now going down.
Elitist liberals used to having their way on abortion can’t accept that they are not in control anymore. They are acting as though a great tragedy has befallen them, when in fact the real tragedy is the loss of over 50 million little unborn boys and girls since 1973 by legalized abortion. We will someday grieve as a nation over this loss, that is to say if we survive long enough to come to our senses.
On this anniversary as we honor our veterans, let us be thankful for their service to our singularly wonderful country, built upon the proposition that all men are created equal, and on the unalienable rights to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.
Hey guys, since I agree with the Catholic bishops on this one, I guess that makes me Catholic (again), according to RH Reality Chuck (out the window).
“Apparently, the signers of Diane DeGette’s letter promising to oppose health care reform if it includes the Stupak amendment don’t want their names to become public. Bawk…bawk….”
If abortion is such a good thing…. why are they resisting having their names public?
Could it be they fear a backlash?
What cowards they are. Just proves that even the most rabid pro abort knows abortion is wrong. How they can possibly support this evil is something I will never know.
It’s crazy how the reaction has been. I’ve been telling my liberal friends, BIG DEAL. They seemed to be comfortable with abortions not being funded when Obama said it wouldn’t so then the amendment comes through to actually DO WHAT OBAMA SAID they freak out like it was some unexpected new assault on women’s rights. Like what, they thought he would change his mind and bow to their every whim? Obviously the house didn’t have a problem.
They are being so petty right now it’s infuriating.
Also, I asked at one of the blogs why I should pay for optional procedures- including abortions, cosmetic surgery etc. Perhaps a boob job will help someone get their dream job- so what? It should be her investment not mine.
I was then told that abortion is not JUST ANY MEDICAL PROCEDURE… etc etc. In which I asked, “but I thought it was just removing tissue? Taking out a parasite?”
No satisfying answer was brought to the table. *shrug*
You go pip. I guess there is really such a thing as a pro-life Democrat :)
If you have problems with people of concscience telling you ‘NO’ when you want to require them to participate in your ‘freedom’, then do not require or even request them to do so.
Find another doctor, nurse, pharamcist, heath care professional, etc.
You would not require a vegetarian to eat meat, or an animal rights activist to work in a slaughter house, would you?
