C’est la vie: French indifferent toward Carla Bruni-Sarkozy’s pregnancy
There isn’t much to say. So many women are expecting children and giving birth, and it’s so uninteresting for French people.

The other reason Bruni-Sarkozy is nixing photos, quoting People, September 5:
You don’t have a child for the [photo] gallery. [My] position as the wife of the head of state has made me even more defensive….
I will do everything to protect this infant, and I’ll be absolutely rigorous. I will never show photos of this child. I will never expose this child.

Ok, either the quote was updated or my morning coffee was, was not coffee!
I totally get why famous and influential people don’t want photos of their children; it would help both paparazzi and kidnappers identify them. I thought she was refusing to let anyone see her baby’s ultrasound images.
Now, I’m going to check the grounds in the coffee maker, ’cause I don’t know what that was…
Yikes! Most women I know can’t wait to show off the baby pictures – before or after birth. I hope when the baby comes it won’t be to “uninteresting” for her. How sad.
Well..she DID say “I will do everything to protect this infant…”.
Still..she would have sounded a little more maternal and a little less detached if she had referred to him/her as “my baby” instead of “this infant”.
Pamela, I don’t know if Carla Bruni-Sarkozy actually speaks English, but in other interviews I’ve read with her, they were translated from French, which made some of the phrases sound funny. So that may be why it says “this infant”. She does have an older son that she keeps out of the public eye for the same reason, to protect him from scrutiny.
Well yes, Kate. The meanings of words and phrases are often lost in translation.
