Stanek weekend question II: What positives can be drawn from the Komen/Planned Parenthood debacle?
Well, what a week this has been.
What started on a very high note, with news that Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure had decided to stop funding Planned Parenthood, ended on a very low note, with news that Komen had supposedly caved.
But there’s always a silver lining and victory in what looks like defeat.
What positives can you take from the debacle?

The whole scenario made PP look like a 5 y.o. throwing a temper tantrum because he didn’t get his way. If there can be a silver lining, perhaps it is that other charities/foundations will think twice before donating to this nightmare of an organization.
I don’t know about a five-year-old. I kept thinking that Cecile Richards unhinged her jaw and tried to swallow Nancy Brinker whole. Which will hopefully make future donors think twice before sending that check. U of Hawaii is thinking about funding PP and I want to send them an email saying, “Don’t do it! They’ll never let you stop!” ;)

The only high note I can see is, those who had no idea that the Komen Foundation gave monies to Planned Parenthood now know. I don’t believe Planned Parenthood can be trusted with any grants, donations or the health of any women imo.
It also put national attention on PP being under investigation, and on their greed and bullying tactics, as noted above. It also busted PP for not providing comprehensive breast health care even though they have led folks to believe they have for quite some time. That can only be a good thing.
The great positive is the fact that Komen’s financial support of Planned Parenthood was totally UNKNOWN by most people before this week. Now that it has been in the news, people can no longer claim ignorance or disbelief that Komen is not so much about breast cancer as it is about kowtowing to various “women’s interests” — as defined by the leftist elites, of course.
Until this week, when young people would ask me for donations for their “Race for the Cure,” “Dance for the Cure” or whatever other fun, Komen-supporting fundraiser they were participating in, I would tell them why I could not give them a donation, that is, because of Komen’s abortion-friendly activities. The response from the kids was either to disbelieve me or to just go into denial, since they didn’t want to be the only one of their peers to NOT participate in the activity.
Well, NOW they will KNOW that I am not just a party-pooping old curmudgeon, that what I said is true, and maybe they will rethink their own participation in the Komen scam. I’m hoping that this happens in millions of households around the country!!
Now that Komen’s abortion support has become public knowledge, those of us who have tried to raise a stink about them in the past will no longer be considered isolated kooks. Komen’s going to lose public support. Time for other organizations to step up and get some of that donation money that Komen has previously gotten such a disproportionately large, privileged chunk of!
It has let the world know that PP is going to be under Federal investigation – and you have to do something really bad to get investigated by the Fed!
I think planned parenthood ends up looking better than they did before this dust-up – I think a large chunk of people more strongly equate the organization with contraception and preventative services…I think the pro-life side is better off working to equate them with abortion services.
The silver lining is that Koman looks dumb and disjointed. Not only are they flip-flopping all over the place, but the new revelations that they are raising money through pink handguns – that just makes them look even more desperate and unfocused.

Incorrect. Discount Gun Sales was not associated with SKG. Discount Gun Sales has taken down their web page and is being issued a cease and desist letter by SKG.

IMO, the lesson the extreme right should learn here is: if you’re going to co-opt a nonpartisan organization to attempt a hit job on Planned Parenthood, learn how to do it right.
Doing it right means laying out 6 mil plastic, then donning a Tyvek suit as well as nitrile gloves before pulling the trigger.
There were too many loose cannons involved and that’s why they were laid bare.

I think that Komen should disband and re-organize into another charity. The new charity can do the exact same thing as the Susan G Komen Fund did, and even have the same people working in it. But it will have a brand new name, a brand new start, and officially be a different organization. Then they can start over where Planned Parenthood is concerned. Of course, they won’t have a relationship with Planned Parenthood, knowing that if they do, they’ll have a tiger by the tail, which won’t let them go.
The psotive is that the truth is revealed again – that killing babies cannot be hidden behind wording like “choice” or “women’s health”. That everyone knows what the real issue is and, like communism in the 80’s the emperor has no clothes. The rhetoric they use is a crumbling facade. The facade is indeed crumbling and that is a joyois thing to behold.
We learned the PP doesn’t need federal funding to stay on top of their game! Nope! they were able to raise so much money so fast, that I think they can stay afloat just fine without all that federal funding they claim they need! Why are they whining about being defunded! with their billion dollar surplus and big donors, they don’t need Title X funds from the federal or state government!
The world now knows that PP does more abortions than they want people to know.
And, we know who is staunchly proabortion that we didn’t know was before (Livestrong for one!)
Now, everyone knows that PP does NOT do mammograms, a fact that only prolifers seemed to know and now the entire US knows they don’t do mammograms. Poor women deserve them…so if all they do is manual breast exams…what on earth are they using all that Komen money for…the few mammograms that they refer out…and all those breast cancer health pamphlets that they send out! They own not one mammogram machine! Geez, with all those money, you think they could afford one..but, I forgot, they don’t want to have to pay the radiologists or the technicians to do them and read them. too expensive (which is why RU 486 is the prefered abortion method…less doctors,less mess and more women are injured, maimed and traumatized in the privacy of their own homes! wow! Sounds like they really care about women! (NOT!)
And, one more thing, EVERYONE now knows that PP is under criminal federal investigation for medicaid fraud, aiding and abbetting sex traffickers and for failure to report rape/incest cases but doing abortions instead showing that they care LESS about women and more about money (with some REAL cases like a soccer coach that paid for 2 abortions before her family found out he had gotten her pregnant!)
I used to quote a verse to my girls when they got caught being “bad”…”you can be sure your sins will find you out!” PP is the one who reported all this to the press..but, they have shot themselves in the foot…the more they talk, the more damage they do to themselves! and when they are found guilty, all those donors are going to be pretending they have no “relationship” with PP!

The upside is that a lot more people know about the Komen-PP relationship.
The downside is that PP has really been blasting this “3%” lie all over the place, and even some pro-lifers I know have repeated that BS statistic.
Some senator recently said that abortion is 90% of what PP does, which was not smart to do without a citation. I guess he was either trying to describe PP’s services to pregnant women (in which case 98% is abortion) or just speaking figuratively. Unfortunately, an idiot staff member tried to explain it away by saying it “wasn’t meant to be a factual statement”, which if anything threw more gasoline on that fire.

Facts are difficult things. This was dealt with on the “outfox” thread in excruciating detail.
The allegation, which is what it is, that Planned Parenthood reported this to the press can’t be proven.
An upside. Billionaire Mayor Michael Bloomberg donates $250,000 to PP.
Finally, a rich liberal who spends his own money instead of the taxpayers’.
OK, so $250,000 is just pocket change to Mike, but give credit where its due.

Why are you so angry, mp? It’s utterly bizarre the way you are completely freaking out over all this. Yes, pro-lifers have pressured Komen to break with Planned Parenthood and will continue to do so. But SGK chose to hire a pro-lifer. SGK chose to break with PP. They have not all been turned into zombies, nor was the Imperious Curse cast on anyone. That it was PP who put this in the press rather than Komen is documented here* and here** and it doesn’t even make sense to quibble with that. Your anger over Komen’s decision is incomprehensible and utterly baffling. Are you angry over the fact that pro-lifers have enough clout to persuade (not force) Komen to try and pull PP’s funding, the fact that PP is clearly run by unbalanced lunatics who think they have a God-given right to everyone else’s money, or the fact that SGK might still be defunding PP only with a little more sneakiness? Because your bizarre comments these past few days have been fairly difficult to decode.

The silver lining is that financial donors will have a much better understanding of PP’s scare tactics than did the women who sufferered because of PP’s greed.
I think it will hurt Komen that they have caved. Now those who were completely unaware of their ties to PP especially Catholics (I pray) willl not donate to Komen. I.E. I went into my local Krogers in Oct. and a fellow parishioner was all decked out in pink I told her about Komen’s ties to PP. If she didn’t believe me now she knows without a doubt after watching all the MSM coverage.
I’m gonna make sure I hold my abortion causes breast cancer sign at their walk & since most likely, many of them had abortions, I will also hold a “loving support group for women who had abortions, Project Rachel’ sign. May the conversions begin!

We’ll all have to wait and see…. but I don’t think Komen has caved yet. They are not accustomed to strong-arm politics and being protested against, so the temptation to cave will be very fierce. But even then…. SGK has figured out by now that PP aren’t nice, friendly women. If they cave, then they are kneeling under the knuckles of the Abortion Mob, and just paying protection money.
Mrs. Del is an awesome pro-life prayer warrior, and also a breast cancer survivor. We will be very sad if SGK caves, and we have to continue our heart-breaking boycott of pink ribbon stuff.
The silver lining is the same as always: Planned Parenthood’s abortion business and nasty ethics are in the headlines AGAIN. Next time Congress debates funding, PP’s oppression of SGK will be re-opened. When PP whines about “those extremist Republican woman-haters,” even more people will see through the lie.

the up side for me stays the same. i will continue to avoid the pink ribbon products.
I think a positive that can be taken from this is that when normally inactive people see that there is a group who would act to restrict their choices having an impact they will push back. As the anti-choice profile is raised and the slippery slope of their negative impacts on peoples lives become apparent people will organise to show support for choice and freedom.
We’re positive that unfortuantely the majority of Americans are in favor of some form of legal abortion. Denying what we’re up against and playing hopscotch while the other side is mastering chess shows we don’t have the brains running this movement, or the church for that matter. Let’s not do any further damage to our cause of saving unborns.
What exactly is an official WE CAVED? If they didn’t then in your world abortion is illegal. We need people leading this charge who are practical, savvy, credible and intelligent. This analysis is the antithesis of that. Do you want abortion illegal or not because your deductions are extremely questionable.
