Pro-life video of the day: “Catholic” Melinda Gates defies Vatican on birth control funds
by LauraLoo
Melinda Gates announced, at an extraordinary summit in London, that the charitable foundation she set up with her Microsoft founder husband Bill was donating $560m to family planning services.
Given Gates’ partnership with the International Planned Parenthood Federation, it is likely that this “family planning” could include abortion.

To exclude abortion, the group must call itself Planned PREGNANCY rather than Planned Parenthood.
Jill, there is an error in the title to this article. It should read:
Pro-life video of the day: non-Catholic Melinda Gates defies Vatican on birth control funds
Tyler, would you settle for “Catholic” Melinda Gates…
Could we add “So-called Catholic”?
Cuz, y’know, if your kids can’t be as rich as she is, they’re better off dead.
I will change it to “Catholic.”
I will change it to “Catholic.”
Yay, I win.! :)
:D
Much better. Melinda Gates’ views do not reflect the Catholic Church’s teaching on contraception. Unfortunately, for her, on the issue of contraception, the Church’s teaching is not open for debate, dissent, or differing opinions. On this issue her conscience needs to be guided and formed by the Church. According to the Church the morality or immorality of the use of contraception is not a matter left to each individual’s conscience. According to the Church contraception is wrong, period.

(Denise) It will allow contraception — but not abortion — in rape cases.
Good for her for standing up to the sexist patriarchy of the church. She’s in the company of brave souls like John Huss, Martin Luther, and John Calvin – folks who realized that their conscience didn’t need to be guided by a corrupt papacy. And Tyler, while the misogynist church says that birth control is wrong, a large percentage of Catholic “handmaidens” are using it. It’s funny, while the pedophile enabling Catholic Church rails about birth control, the pro-choice Episcopal Church, which approved birth control in the 30’s, is now blessing same sex marriage rites. While they and other liberal Protestant denominations have moved into the 21st century, the Catholic Church is still stuck in the Middle Ages. And thanks to folks like Melinda Gates, more and more people are ignoring them.
How insulting MG is to women in underdeveloped countries. She could be helping them with legal structures, education, water, basic medicine, real women’s health treatments, etc.
But no, the message is ‘please don’t have too many children and the world will be a better place for the incredibly affluent like me’. Po’ women and their reproductive powers are the problem
for the self-appointed population police like MG.
Self-interested charity is false. May African women be able to have lots of children and care for them well. I love Africans, and want to see them increase.
You have no idea what you’re talking about. The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation is active in all of those areas and many more. Its record is absolutely unimpeachable. Suggesting a selfish motive on the part of Melinda Gates or anyone else associated with the foundation is appalling.
Joan, support of Planned Barrenhood (the largest mutilator of the mother’s womb and killer of unborn children) is an act of hostility to mothers and unborn children…that is not a suggestion it is a fact.
TAke the survey, find out who would win in a contest between Ron Paul and Barrack Obama, and also see how Mitt Romney is affecting the solidarity of the Christian and Pro-life Vote!

LOL@ CC using John Calvin as an example of some sort of hero. Wasn’t he the dude who basically invented determinism? There is a cruel bit of theology. Why doesn’t that bother you, CC? At least in Catholicism everybody has a chance to “go to heaven”, in Calvinism if you aren’t chosen you are screwed. Aren’t you always complaining about how Catholics are meanies because they think that people are going to hell?
Jack, CC was just trying to stir up strife. You are wrong about John Calvin and determinism. If you want the true idea of what Calvin believed about man’s will, read through http://www.monergism.com/thethreshold/articles/onsite/freewill_chantry.html
Lust vs Love
Selfishly using someone vs I love you so much that I want the very best for you including going to Heaven and having “a bit of Heaven here on earth”. Lust, being one of the 7 capital sins, can stop one going to Heaven. (Do not know where Martin Luther or John Calvin ended up, but no one on earth refers to them as Saints.)
Lust with contraception is like having a meal, chewing it up and spitting it out because you do not want the calories. What a waste!
Have you not heard about estrogen from the birth control pill moving through a woman’s body where it ends up in rivers and streams changing fish? “Male fish exposed to the hormone become feminized — they produce the same proteins that female fish do to develop eggs. Some males even develop eggs in their testes.” http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2007/05/070521-sex-fish.html
Estrogen-progestogen oral contraceptives are also carcinogenic according to the American Cancer Society. http://www.cancer.org/Cancer/CancerCauses/OtherCarcinogens/GeneralInformationaboutCarcinogens/known-and-probable-human-carcinogens
Depo Provera, that is depo-medroxyprogesterone acetate (DMPA), doubles the risk of breast cancer. http://cancerres.aacrjournals.org/content/early/2012/02/25/0008-5472.CAN-11-4064.abstract
How much better to “teach someone to fish rather than feeding them until they die” or, in the case of birth control, until they can no longer have children. Natural Family Planning does not have any bad health effects, does not cost anything to practice, and does not bother the environment.
Even an unmarried female has a good use for natural family planning and wanting to know how her body works. See some of the comments for this article. http://www.ncregister.com/blog/simcha-fisher/why-would-an-unmarried-woman-chart-her-cycle
Sure does not sound like the population controls love the rest of the world or it’s people!
Yeah, Melinda isn’t standing up to the church based on any doctrine, so no, she is not of the mold of Luther, Huss or Calvin.
Personally, I don’t think that sending Africans contraception is wrong. Abortion is. Melinda Gates is going to give abortion providers money to pass out contraceptives but none of “her” money is going to fund abortions. It strains credulity. Basically, she knows that more than half of people in the US oppose abortion, and she just doesn’t want to be hassled. That is it. So, she says “her” money can’t pay for abortions. It is just a lie. She knows it. Planned Parenthood knows it. We all know it. She won’t be auditing them for compliance. If anyone challenges her she will just insist that it isn’t happening and no one is going to report otherwise. So there you go.
It’s funny, while the … Catholic Church rails about birth control, the pro-choice Episcopal Church, which approved birth control in the 30?s, is now blessing same sex marriage rites. While they and other liberal Protestant denominations have moved into the 21st century, the Catholic Church is still stuck in the Middle Ages.
Yep. Funny.
Thanks be to God that the Holy Spirit protects the Catholic Church from ever embracing the errors of CC’s beloved “21st century”.
Lust vs Love
Selfishly using someone as in the capital sin of Lust vs loving them so much that you want them to go to Heaven and to have “a bit of Heaven” here on earth. (Do not know where Martin Luther or John Calvin ended up, but no one on earth refers to them as Saints.)
Have you not heard about the estrogen in the birth control pill going through a woman’s body, ending up in rivers and streams, causing fish to change? “Male fish exposed to the hormone become feminized – they produce the same proteins that female fish do to develop eggs. The American Cancer Society labels estrogen-progestogen oral contraceptives as a carcinogenic. http://www.cancer.org/Cancer/CancerCauses/OtherCarcinogens/GeneralInformationaboutCarcinogens/known-and-probable-human-carcinogens
Mentions more than just fish. See also: Feds Label Estrogen a ‘Known Carcinogenic’ http://womensenews.org/story/medicine/021223/feds-label-estrogen-known-carcinogen
Depo Provera doubles a 20 to 44 year old woman’s chance of breast cancer. http://cancerres.aacrjournals.org/content/early/2012/02/25/0008-5472.CAN-11-4064.abstract
Does not sound like the population controllers love the earth or the people on it. Giving out birth control until they die or until they no longer can have children with all of it’s effects is not loving. Natural Family Planning costs nothing to practice and has no harmful effects on the body or the planet.
Even an unmarried women may want to know how her body works. See this article and some of it’s comments: http://www.ncregister.com/blog/simcha-fisher/why-would-an-unmarried-woman-chart-her-cycle
“Thanks be to God that the Holy Spirit protects the Catholic Church from ever embracing the errors of CC’s beloved “21st century”.”
LOL, like Galileo’s 17th century heretical error of a heliocentric solar system which the Vatican just got around to exonerating him for. If that’s progress, the Catholic Church has just entered the 1700’s! Is the “Syllabus of Errors” still extant? Even if it is, the Inquisition ain’t what it used to be!
CC, why do you feel the need to pit some Christian churches against others? You don’ even believe in God, so aren’t all Jesus believers sort of irrational in your mind?
There are therapists who can help you resolve your anger, bitterness, and misanthropy. Even here in Sewanee.
So Gates is pushing contrceptives on poorer women in poorer countries the same way Sanger pushed contraceptives on poorer American women. They had the same goals… why wouldn’t they have the same outcome?
Look at PPs record- who honestly believes abortion isn’t part of the program? Gates can’t be that gullible with her money.
Come to think of it, is there any international organization that promotes birth control that doesn’t also provide or refer for abortion? I sincerely wonder.
Using hormonal contraception makes people weaker to fight off the HIV virus. Besides the ‘license’ to have intimacy without children, we are inviting the women of Africa to be used more by men and be more susceptible to AIDS. unbelievable.
I wish people having money would use it for the good. clean water…schools….safe travel … safe food and crop science… good housing …. you get the picture.
exactly Joy,
if one is attempting to reduce human population, make ’em very sick!
@joyfromillinois: Do you believe it is “for the good” when girls and women who believe they are either financially or emotionally unprepared to have children become pregnant?
Aren’t there at least SOME women who are right in thinking they would not be good mothers?
Aren’t there at least SOME women who are right in thinking they should not increase their families?
Is reproduction by anyone and everyone under any and all circumstances always good?
Just think what 560 million could do for women’s obstetrical care in Africa! Mater Care International which is a nonprofit running out of Newfoundland Canada and which receives ZERO funding from the Canadian government is run by a Catholic doctor who attempts to provide safe care for women who WANT to have their babies. Most Third World women desperately WANT their babies but either have them die during childbirth or they die in the process.
Little wonder that Christ himself said it is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than for the rich to enter heaven….
During Galileo’s lifetime, half the Catholic Bishops agreed with him about his astronomical theories. That is NOT why he was ex-communicated. It’s true that there was controversy over the ideas, but that is NOT what he did wrong.
Argumentum Ignoratum. It sounds like the argument an ignorant person would make. What the phrase really means is “assuming the ignorance of your audience will prevent them from knowing you don’t have the facts.”
I’d love to just post why he WAS excommunicated, but it wouldn’t hurt little cc to do a little research of her own. It’s like the US Civil War. Many people think it was over slavery. It was not. It was fought over cessation from the union. cc, why don’t go ahead and look up the answer, then post here the real reason Galileo was excommunicated. Dare ya. Double dare ya. Triple dog dare ya.
PS Liberals want to take us back to the times of the debauchery of the Roman rulers who, by their laziness and self-indulgence, allowed the northern tribes to decimate its territories. Therefore, if you accuse the Church of being stuck in the middle ages, you are in fact complimenting us on always been centuries ahead of the times. Thank you.
i have to wonder if Melinda was pro population contrrol as a little girl or did it start after she got married to the Billionaire?
Natural Family Planning would be a better option for the women in these countries, as well as clean drinking water and better nutrition. Abortion and contraception do NOT solve maternal mortality problems.
Dare ya. Double dare ya. Triple dog dare ya.
Ah, more histrionics from Ninek who loves to be part of the “handmaidens” who sit in Catholic pews because women are not worthy to be the equals of men. If the Catholic Church were to be judged on today’s law governing businesses, they would be guilty of all kinds of civil rights violations but whatever. In response to Ninek’s dare. Galileo was never excommunicated. He was, rather, condemned by the Catholic Church to live out his life in house arrest. (Daria Sorbel has a great biography of his daughter, a very literate Catholic nun). Somehow, Ninek, in typical fashion, twisted my post where I never said anything about excommunication. But it is true that her oh, so holy fathers (cuz there ain’t no mothers beyond the nunnery) only exonerated Galileo in 1965.
But riddle me this. Why did Cardinal Pacelli (Pius XII) make a public statement about excommunicating all members of the Communist party but never did the same thing about Adolph Hitler who, I guess excommunicated himself in spite of the fact that the good German bishops all said Mass for the soul of Hitler. Funny, one wonders if Ninek would have been receiving communion at one of the Hitler masses because, as was thought by Catholics at that time and up until Vatican II (now discredited by conservative Catholics), those Jews murdered our beloved Savior – and now they’re murdering “babies.” Right, Ninek? Funny, Pacelli’s path to sainthood has been derailed and in no small part due to the state of Israel who, after 2,000 years of Catholic persecution, have no great love for their Catholic persecutors. Funny, the non-Orthodox Jews aren’t part of a pro-life movement that is based, largely, on Catholic teachings. But thankfully, in our secular country, the Catholic Church can no longer rely on the Inquisition.
Bummer, right, Ninek?
And liberals wanting to go back to the “debauchery” (eww, dirty sex involving those women temptresses) of the Roman empire? Really? How bout going back to the secular principals of the Enlightenment which had no truck with religious cults such as the one run from Rome.
BTW, check out the latest Gallup poll. Trust in organized religion is higher in the Catholic population than among Protestants. One of of every ten Americans is an ex-Catholic (raise hand here, proudly). Hopefully, at the end of the 21st century, the Vatican will be a nice Roman museum and the Catholic Church just another stain on world history.
Rabbi Waskow (who would have burnt by the Catholic Inquisition) says it all:
That is his general sense of what is happening in the world, and he sees this acutely happening in the Roman Catholic Church as they try to resist progress.
Rabbi Waskow says there are predictable ways people tend to behave during a quake:
They can ignore and deny the facts, which cause them to get repeatedly hit, hurt and killed by falling objects.
They can freeze, grab hold of some object and hope for the best. (Waskow points out that in a social earthquake, it may mean gripping a memory and insisting on trying to live that way while trying to coerce others into doing so as well.)
They can “dance.” Dancing through an earthquake is the hardest response to do, but the move is “life giving,” in his opinion
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/eliza-wood/rabbi-challenges-the-catholic-church_b_1666044.html
And Ninek, where’s that You Tube of you and your priest pals berating women walking into Planned Parenthood? Inquiring minds want to see you in action!
Revisionist history is so much more fun than the real stuff!
cc you o have some facts hat seemcoherent to you (I think), but are vested with much (unexplained) bitterness.
About the rabbi’s commets (Jesus, a Jew, was also called ‘rabbi’): they remind me of the divergent responses to an actual earthquake in Peru decades ago. My brother said its hard to react at all. The ‘solid’ ground is like ‘walking on Jello’, or a stormy sea. The locals ‘fell to their knees and prayed (checking every few seconds to see if the shaking had stopped)’. They were terrified. By contrast the ‘crazy’ Americans thought it ‘cool’!
Perhaps, we are in age of intellectual-earthquake. Some are hoping ‘for a quick return to ’normalcy’, while others get-a-buzz off of ‘cool’.
part of the “handmaidens” who sit in Catholic pews because women are not worthy to be the equals of men.
CC,
Bitterness and feelings of inadequacy consumes you. Because you have forsaken God you unable to find any worth within yourself so you seek your worth in railing to prove you are equal to men. What a wretched life for a woman.
The GATES OF HELL will NOT Prevail.
@Denise: There are MANY organizations that would gladly assist those women financially, including helping with rent or whatever they need, including creating an adoption plan if the woman decides she can’t raise a baby but does NOT want an abortion. There are so many couples willing to adopt a baby out there! This includes adopting children with special needs. My cousin and his wife are in the process of trying to adopt. With ONE MILLION ABORTIONS a YEAR…how many couples are still waiting to adopt??
Poor cc, still can’t find the real reason the Church was angry at Galileo. Nice try at dodging, though, going into histrionics about the Church.
One thing is actually kind of creepy: cc’s continued efforts to see a video of myself in front of a Planned Parenthood. I never said there was one, and I never offered one, but cc is very eager to cyperstalk me and perhaps actually stalk me outside the confines of the internet.
I love my Church. As one comedian put it, Mary is still headlining after 2000 years! Readers, I regularly include cc in my prayers. Please join me. I also pray regularly for all my pro-abortion friends, relatives, co-workers, and city, state, national and international leaders.
Ave Maria, ora pro nobis. Mary Magdalene, you were the first person to see the risen Christ and the first person to deliver that good news to the Apostles. Intercede for us and help us ask the Lord on behalf the pro-abortion people to heal them, in body, mind, and soul. Saint Teresa, most lovely little flower, join us in prayer for the lives of children all over our world. Jesus, I know that it can be difficult for us to see your child cc with the same tenderness and love that you have for her. Dear Lord, do please help us to see the humanity in all people, not just the cute ones, but especially those in most need of your mercy. Amen.
CC: The fact is that some women prefer old-fashioned gender roles. I knew a woman who converted from Methodism to the Roman Catholic Church. One reason was that Methodists “allowed women to become ministers.”
She needs to be excommunicated this is just modern day eugenics and genocide. Do they think blacks and asians are to ignorant to learn NFP. As women we need to tell other women about abstinance and how we can take our basal tmp and our mucus each month. We are kept in the dark and don’t even know our own bodily fertility signs. Big Pharm makes big money off of ignoranceof women. I used to be in the same darkness before God enlightened me to the truth and the beautiful teachings of the Catholic Church. Why do women buy the lie.
