Very pregnant Olympics competitor
I will talk to the baby before I compete. [I’ll say] no kicking, stay calm for one hour and 15 minutes only please.
~ Nur Suryani Mohamed Taibi, Malaysia’s entrant in the Olympics’ 10m rifle event, 34 weeks pregnant with a baby girl, not the first expectant mother in history to compete in the games , but “believed to be the furthest along,” according to Yahoo Sports

Further proof that pregnancy is not a disability or a disease and being a mother doesn’t mean you can’t realize your full potential in life.
I was friends with the late Dan Duchaine, AKA the “Steroid Guru.” He told me that some female athletes at the top level would deliberately get pregnant with the intention of aborting as soon as they were pregnant. The reason was that the early affect of pregnancy caused hormonal changes that benefited them athletically.
Thanks for that tidbit, Denise. Disgusting information, as usual.

(Denise) I’m sorry if you’re offended, xalisae.
Wouldn’t shooting a rifle during pregnancy hurt a baby’s ears? The mom would be wearing hearing protection, but the baby would not.
Sylvia,
Sound travels more readily through air than it does through liquid. The amniotic fluid would act to muffle the sound of the rifle firing. I got the same kinda thing when I went to go see TOOL in concert when I was 8 months along with my daughter. “OH MY GOODNESS, AREN’T YOU WORRIED ABOUT THE BAYBEEEEE?!?!!” Knowing science helps.
Anyway, she seemed to enjoy it. So did I. ^_^
I’ve always found the phrase “very pregnant” a little odd… you are or you’re not, you know? Anyway, I’ll be rooting for Taibi. Pregnant achievers for the win!
Sound travels more readily through air than it does through liquid.
But…it’s the other way around. Sound travels much better through liquid than air, because liquid is denser and therefore provides a better medium for the sound waves to vibrate across. It travels even better than that through solid surfaces, which is why you hear your own voice differently than everyone else does, because the vibrations travel through you to your eardrums, rather than the air. Of course, I sincerely doubt the sound of the gun will hurt her child, though. Or that your child, xal, was in any danger from a rock concert. Because sounds above water don’t readily translate to water environments, and vice versa.
Also, selamat berhasil kepada Ibu Taibi! :D
Because sounds above water don’t readily translate to water environments, and vice versa.
Thank you for posting the important point that I neglected which would’ve made my now dumb-sounding post actually make sense. >_<
Apart from whether the rifle report might frighten the child is the very real issue of lead contamination created at rifle ranges. From the Texas public health folks:
Sources of lead contamination in rifle ranges:
Exploding lead styphnate primers
Friction from the lead slug against the gun barrel
Lead slugs hitting the bullet trap, walls, floors, or
ceiling of the range
Spent bullets and settled dust
Improper range-cleaning methods disturbing settled
dust
Poor indoor range ventilation
Outdoor weather conditions
Get the rest here:
http://www.dshs.state.tx.us/epitox/fact_sheets/firingranges_emp.pdf
This mother being a competitive shooter and so far along in her pregnancy has exposed herself and her baby to quite a bit of lead contamination.
Splitting hairs, Kelsey… it’s very different to be 34 weeks pregnant versus 4. Baby is still the same baby…yes…but a lot bigger. Don’t split hairs.
Blobs of tissue kick?
Wow.
Dr. Nadal:
My cop friend just said lead had been banned…but that could just be here in the good ol’ U S of A.
“Very pregnant” is a phrase meaning advanced in the pregnancy.
For x: I wasn’t discussing abortion with Dan Duchaine when he related this “disgusting information.” We were discussing steroids, how they work, and why athletes take them. When he said, “Sometimes high-level female athletes will deliberately get pregnant and then abort because the chemical change gives them a slight advantage similar to taking steroids that won’t be counted against them in tests for steroids,” I SHUDDERED. Literally. I shuddered because I was so horrified at the idea that anyone would create an embryo with the intention of destroying it.
We don’t live in the best of all possible worlds. This is somewhat similar to my asking my friend what would have happened if, against the odds since he has a low sperm count due to an injury he received, he had impregnate a woman in his salad days when he was quite popular with the ladies. He said, “She would have aborted.” He later said, “I would have made her life so miserable she would have had to abort just to get some peace.”
Again, we don’t live in a perfect world. We live in this one. Sometimes reality is disgusting.
I apologize for taking focus off the true subject. This woman is to be commended for her achievement as an athlete. I also congratulate her on her pregnancy and hope she safely delivers a very healthy baby!
Happy Birthday!
Happy Mother’s Day!
Mr. Nadal expressed a concern for lead contamination. Others are concerned about noise. I think both fears are unfounded. This is an air rifle competition, so the sound level is relatively low. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/10_metre_air_rifle
While the pellets shot are made of lead, there is obviously no primer or gunpowder with an air rifle. I seriously doubt the competitors will be cleaning the range. As long as they wash their hands thoroughly when finished, there should be negligible risk.
Denise, no apology necessary. What you heard is true, and it’s germane to the topic. It’s called “abortion doping” - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Abortion_doping
Denise,
I didn’t mean anything personal. I just meant that that information is grotesque, as is much of what you present. I know it has much to do with your circumstances and interests, but…geeze, woman…even at the height of my high school/early college angst I had no concept of what “morbid” is compared to your expertise. :X
Although I was shocked and horrified by what Dan Duchaine told me, I learned about the possibility of getting pregnant with the intention to abort from another source. A “US News & World Report” had a round-up of stories from women who had aborted. They were typical — except for 1 who had undergone 11 abortions! She claimed the people at the abortion “were so nice to me” that she got pregnant 10 more times just so she could go there again!
However, when I discussed this with 2 anti-abortion people, they were convinced the story was fabricated. One who is an activist in the movement to criminalize abortion said, “I think one of my fellow pro-lifers might have made that up for our cause. I hope they didn’t but the story doesn’t sound real.”
Another who opposes abortion very strongly said, “The story can’t be true. An abortion hurts a lot and no one would go through that just to see some people who had been nice. Also, if this woman is so lonely and pitiful, how could she pay for all those abortions? Welfare doesn’t cover it. The story has to have been made up.”
However, “US News & World Report” doesn’t have a tabloid sort of reputation. In addition, there was a woman who wrote a book called “Confessions of An Abortion Addict” on a kind of similar theme.
After thinking it over at great length, I came to the conclusion that some female psychopaths or others who have a kind of “homicidal impulse” might get pregnant deliberately with the intention to abort.
There is a woman named Marie Noe — I have no idea whether or not she’s related to my ex-husband — who had babies repeatedly and killed them. There are other cases like that. Something similar might lead to repeat abortions.
I write professionally. A lot of what I write is true crime. Even if it’s not true crime, my writing is often connected to tragedies of various sorts.
Once again: I congratulate the Olympic athlete on both her athletic prowess and her pregnancy. The best of luck with both!

Gun shots are not nearly as loud to babies as ultrasounds.
Denise, that’s so sad that women would do that! Unfortunately and sadly, it does make sense from a psychopath POV. Also, I had no idea that some female athletes would do that. Very sick and sad. :(
I think it’s cool that this lady is competing in the Olympics! I hope she rocks it!
Denise, I have said this here before, but when I was in a crisis pregnancy situation which was physically very problematic, the first time that anybody was really NICE to me about it was at an abortion clinic. They were honestly the first people who asked if I was okay. They were the first people who told me I would BE okay.
I don’t think it’s likely that any woman would intentionally get pregnant just to experience the kindness, however ideologically-motivated, of an abortion clinic’s employees. But I do think that when you are the “wrong” kind of person to be on the receiving end of compassionate medical or social care – I was young and unmarried, with no college degree, no insurance and no money – it is amazing how much it can affect you just to be treated kindly.
t is amazing how much it can affect you just to be treated kindly.”Something to keep in mind when promoting the pro-life movement.

That’s so YOU. :-D
