Roger Ebert opposed abortion, even for rape and incest
My choice is to not support abortion, except in cases of a clear-cut choice between the lives of the mother and child.
A child conceived through incest or rape is innocent and deserves the right to be born.
~ Film critic Roger Ebert, “How I am a Roman Catholic,” March 1, written a little over a month before he passed away on April 4
A man who truly valued life– and showed it by living his own life to the fullest, even in the face of cancer. He will be missed.

I read the article, as well as his other article on “How I believe in God”. Alas! He is somewhat ambiguous (or not?) when it comes to supporting or opposing abortion. For example, he wrote, “For example, in the matter of abortion, I am pro-choice, but my personal choice would be to have nothing to do with an abortion, certainly not of a child of my own. I believe in free will, and believe I have no right to tell anyone else what to do.”
This sounds like a rewording of the old “I oppose abortion but think it should be legal” line.
He seems to be far more post-modern than Catholic. When he writes, “I consider myself Catholic, lock, stock and barrel, with this technical loophole: I cannot believe in God.” Can one really dismiss God as a technicality to Catholicism? Impossible! Grace would be meaningless, and so would Jesus, and forgiveness, and the Mass, and Confession…what you’re left with is a set of empty rules bereft of their ultimate purpose, and even the means to fulfill them.

it sounds like he is a typical modern Catholic. he believes what he wants but still wants to be considered a Catholic.
I guess we are overdue for a good persecution to get these fence sitters to make a “choice”.

Hmm. It sounds like he got half-way there. Which is much more than I thought of him. He at least saw the wrongness in abortion, and didn’t just go along with this opinion because he was Catholic.
Many Catholic politicians haven’t even given it that much thought.

I followed his Twitter. He was clearly pro-choice. Among other things he commended Vice President Biden’s line about not enforcing his pro-life beliefs on others. He also retweeted a lot of pro-choice tweets regarding the rape exception. I find it extremely strange that he would be pro-life.

Maybe he changed his mind? This was from only a month ago.

Kristina,
On second thought, you’re right. I’ve loathed his political opinions for years. I was just a bit shocked by the quote. But it all just boils down to the gutless “personally opposed” nonsense.

I hope he rests in peace.

Yeah, that’s not a technicality.

I don’t know the state of his soul when he died (and I’m not surmising..so calm down pro-aborts who want to jump on this) but I GUARANTEE he believes in God now no matter what his beliefs were at death.
It is a shame he suffered so much with the cancer and all but he was courageous through it all. I hope he was pro-life. Many people are “personally” pro-life but afraid to take a stand.

I wish more people would say it and I wish more people would make sure that it got printed or published some how. But I wish they would do it when they were young, and not when they were right about to go, that way they would have more time to save more babies.

It sounds like Roger Ebert did not have any interest in legislating what others should believe, as it should be.

Legislating that you can’t kill someone in-utero doesn’t change what anyone is allowed to believe.
