Pro-life vid of day: Potential brides given “virginity tests”
by Hans Johnson
In India, where the giving of dowries is still a widespread custom, the government often holds mass weddings for poor women. Recently in the village of Harad in the central state of Madhya Pradesh, more than 450 women are said to have been given virginity tests prior to the ceremony to screen out married women trying to commit fraud. Around ten (nine of whom were pregnant) didn’t “qualify.” They had their registrations removed and were forced to return their gifts (totaling about 100 British pounds) to the government:

Say what you want about the US government, at least we don’t do THIS.
Too bad there wasn’t a way to check out a man’s virginity!
Also, what about the girls who do not have intercourse but play in other ways – for them you’d have to give them a lie detector and then hope it’s 100% accurate.

Come on Jack, it’s simply ‘tradition’. You know how much importance some people place on tradition :-)

“what about the girls who do not have intercourse but play in other ways” – at what point, or by what act, do you consider them no longer virgins?
Actually, if there was a virginity test for men I doubt there’d be a single culture in the world that would place the importance on ‘purity’ that many do.

It’s because the focus on female virginity has never been about “purity”, it’s about paternity. Dudes didn’t like that they couldn’t be sure who’s baby they were raising, so they stigmatized female sexuality to reassure themselves. If dudes were the ones getting pregnant, and women had some type of political power, we’d be the ones getting stigmatized.
You may well be right Jack but doesn’t that open up another possibility.
If it were possible to tell if men had been dipping their wick, women may want them tested to make sure they hadn’t fathered elsewhere. Bit embarrasing when the happy couple are being trailed by some poor lady carrying a baby calling out ‘but it’s yours too!”
Lol! Well, that’s why we have paternity tests and child support nowadays, to fix that pesky biological ability to knock someone up and sneak off. Not perfect, but it’s oodles better than in some past cultures.
From what I’ve read, most of our hang-ups and rules about sex have roots in the medieval nobility. It was traditionally only upper class and nobility in many cultures where the “purity” and “bastardy” was really important, because of the inheritance problems. Non-landowning men and women in their social class had much more relaxed rules. So, yeah, a lot western sexual norms are because we’re emulating the Middle Age nobility lol.
By golly Jack, this whole ‘culture’ and ‘tradition’ business is just so gosh-darned murky.
When they have vaginal sex with a man, also known as just plain ‘sex’. Everything else is heavy petting (hp). I find it makes things clearer in people’s minds when one does not call hp acts ‘sex’, though a lot of people do.
Justin, disagree – oral sex is SEX – just not intercourse sex.
Good PLV topic – what constitutes virginity? I’ll plan on working on that topic soon.

P.S. Reality, your ROFLMBO was funny.
With all this talk about different types of sex, I’m surprised that Denise has not joined in yet.
D’oh! Does it count as feeding the troll when you reference them but they have not commented yet?
I think it is called troll whispering.
Now we wait.
You just can’t help yourself. can you JDC? Lol.
