Stanek Sunday funnies 1-5-14
Here were my top five favorite cartoons for the launch of the new year. Be sure to vote for your fav in the poll at the bottom of this post!
by Dana Summers at GoComics.com…
by Steve Kelley at GoComics.com…
by Nate Beeler at Townhall.com…
by Ted Rall at GoComics.com…
by Glenn Foden at Townhall.com…

The last cartoon is a hoot, especially since I did see an actual photograph of some penguins standing on ice floes observing these idiot humans trying to “prove” global warming. Now their rescuers, who are trapped in all this ice have to be freed by our Coast Guard.
I like the Duck Dynasty one, though – I wouldn’t let any of those guys around a baby – he’d probably try to marry the kid off to somebody.
Hi Mary,
I voted for #5. What’s really funny about their being stuck while “researching the disappearing ice” is the fact this is midsummer down there!
Also ironic is Ted Rall getting the most votes, because he’s left of Left. He thinks Obama should have gone all-out in “transforming America”. I’ll never forgot his despicable cartoons in The New Yorker depicting pro-lifers as buck-toothed morons.
Climate change isn’t even up for debate, the only somewhat debate is how much humans contribute to it.
Rall’s is interesting: The Black guy at the elitist cocktail party observes that Obama is inept and has done nothing for American Blacks — except for the irrelevant matter of being a Black guy, himself. His election merely demonstrates that racism is dead and gone (as far as white American voters are concerned).
I voted for #3: Beeler’s observation that we are saddled with Obamacare’s train wreck. We could have avoided it with the 2012 election, but 14 months later there’s nothing to do but salvage work.
His election merely demonstrates that racism is dead and gone (as far as white American voters are concerned). – seriously? How do you figure that Del?
You really are reality-impaired, aren’t you?!!?
I mean that white Americans voted for-or-against Obama with nary a thought about his race. It just never came up in any conversation, anywhere.
Black voters, however, are still significantly racist.
There are still many problems with race in this country, Del. White people and minority groups are all perpetuating some nasty stuff.
It just never came up in any conversation, anywhere. Black voters, however, are still significantly racist. – and you accuse me of being reality impaired! Did you cut yourself off from all media from 2007 onward or something?
Remember all those tweets “keep the White House white”?
Or the birther nonsense (and the Republicans should like me bringing that up, because it was started by a Dem). You can’t tell me that a white guy would still be dealing with the birther crap. McCain was even born in Panama, no one cared. Obama was born in Hawaii, worst thing ever apparently.
There are other things too, but once people go down the “there’s no such thing as white people ever being racist, ever!” road it’s pretty useless.
Yes indeed, some of the social media stuff was absolutely delightful ADLP.
I’m seriously surprised that anyone would attempt to claim that racism is dead and gone amongst white voters but still significant amongst black voters. That’s pretty much a self-defeating statement.
Meh, whatever. Some people’s children.
I’m amused that three Sunday Funnies threads are somewhat going on right now.
‘some people’s children’ – I haven’t heard that one in a while :-)
going on or going off? ;-)
oh well. Suit yourselves.
If white voters were significantly racist against Obama because he is black (even by a few percentage points), he would not have been elected. If Black voters weren’t significantly racist, he would not have been elected. The margins were too close.
Now I don’t really mind a lot of Black voters supporting Obama’s skin color. That was not much different from the Catholic vote that turned out for Kennedy. Even if they were just voting for his race, it was not a vote for any hatred or malice.
I guess I wasn’t paying much attention. I didn’t know about any “Keep the White House white” tweets. I don’t follow any Democrats.
Uh, black voters tend to vote Dem. Regardless of the skin color of the candidate. I know a few black people probably voted along racial lines, but far more voted on party affiliation.
Racism isn’t necessarily manifested in votes.
It wasn’t Dems who did the “keep the White House white” stuff.
Del -
This is a very, very odd soapbox to have jumped onto.
I don’t want to have yet another racism argument, I’ve barely recovered from the last one lol.
“racism is dead and gone as far as white american voters are concerned”
“black voters are still significantly racist”
I’m almost inclined to just let you run with that Del.
Actually the last one isn’t funny.
Been reading accounts from Antarctic research stations. They say the ship that got stuck was not serious research. And equipment, supplies and other necessary things have been diverted for their rescue, and may never reach the stations because the seasonal window may close. In other words, the global warming BS crap is interfering with many true research projects that have been on-going for years.
Sabotage? I don’t think it was planned (more like pure ignorance), but if you wanted to throw a serious wedge into good research, sending a bogus cruise using an inadequate ship into the wrong place would do the trick. Especially if you knew the only ships that could aid would be those supplying on-going research efforts.
I never heard about any “keep the White House white” tweets either. I. must. try. to. focus. better.
Just go on twitter and search the hashtag: #keepthewhitehousewhite. There’s a lot of them from around the election and such. As well as a lot of other racist social media. Not saying that there aren’t racist minorities, there certainly is, but to act like white Americans all have zero problems with racism ever because Obama got elected is some really poor reasoning.
Obama’s approval ratings are plummeting across all categories including among blacks. He has slipped all the way down to a 97% favorability rating among black voters.
Toss up btw Rall and Foden. Both were very apropos.

Apparently so. I did not realize how firmly rank-and-file Democrats really believe this racism stuff.
I stand by the mathematical analysis. If even a half-percent of the white voters who are inclined to like free stuff held racist antipathy toward Blacks, then Obama would have lost.
The one good thing about Obama’s election and re-election is that these have demonstrated that racism is no longer a significant problem in American culture.
There is still the subtle racism that encourages Black women to kill their children at a high rate, and the racism that holds inner-city Blacks in the grip of welfare-poverty. But those evils are practiced by pro-abortion Democrats, and I cannot fathom the minds that think those are good.
The one good thing about Obama’s election and re-election is that these have demonstrated that racism is no longer a significant problem in American culture.
Is anyone here honest enough to admit that were Obama not interracial he would have much more of a hurdle to overcome? Let’s face it – Samuel L. Jackson’s statement that “he is my n…..” (remember that?) could not be farther from the truth.
Not to mention Alan Keyes and Hermain Cain. Race simply doesn’t matter to Republican party activists.
I am not a Republican activist. I’m just a guy in Wisconsin, a staunch independent, and one who does not believe that Big Government is able to solve the problems of poverty, healthcare, or education. So I don’t put a lot of personal emotion into political contests.
I do observe that the Democratic Party’s policies toward their poor and minority voters are condescending, exploitive, and generally racist…. just not so maliciously as in the past decades.
Thomas R. says:

I don’t think that Obama’s bi-racial lineage matters in this way. I can’t imagine anyone saying “Well, his mom was white so I’ll trust him.”
Obama’s acceptance has everything to do with his Ivy League education — and his ability to sound like an educated man. He speaks beautifully, and this allows most people to skip over any fears and revulsion that are triggered by ghetto language.
Typically, people (of any race) today who fear black skin really afraid of ghetto culture and its tendency to violence. A few words of polite and gentle English are usually enough to put anyone’s mind at ease.
But you are forgetting Del that those words come from a teleprompter :)
Obama’s acceptance has everything to do with his Ivy League education — and his ability to sound like an educated man.
Don’t forget that movie star smile! Americans love the people that have the look.
And he is tall too :)
Lol whites are never racist, it’s all those dark people that are the only problem. All right people.
Do you find this disgusting ;)
I find everything disgusting!
But seriously, my eyes hurt from rolling them into the back of my head. “He’s so well spoken for a black person” lol.
and again, he only speaks what the teleprompter tells him to. I am not even sure if he writes his own speeches. Can you check on that please :)
I wonder if white Hispanics are also immune to being racist or if we count enough as minorities to be part of the racist problem.
Of course Obama doesn’t write his own speeches, lol.
Thomas I’m not really disgusted, I’m rather disturbed, though. It’s true that minority groups have problems with racism, especially towards other minority groups (like I said on the other thread, the Cuban community likes white people in general, but they tend to dislike black people and Hispanics with darker skin), but that doesn’t mean there’s zero issue for white Americans. Seems like passing the buck to me. I think all you’d have to do is spend time in a predominately minority neighborhood (poor, because money does insulate from some of this) and see the differences in how you get treated as white person, especially by the police and other whites, compared to how your darker neighbors get treated.
There are also statistical measures that show that the darker your skin or the more “ethnic” your name, the more likely you are to be discriminated against for housing, employment, etc. But I guess since Obama’s half black none of that matters? Nothing for white Americans to work on or be aware of? Nonsense.
Did you find anything on accent discrimination in your research Jack? ;)
Lol yes. Xenophobia towards even white immigrants can be a huge problem in some areas.
Is that so, I have not noticed ;)
You’re messing with me. I’m very confused.
Must be the white (Caucasian) privilege coming out :)
Hey now I’m white, and somewhat Caucasian. Privilege battles, to the death.
arent’ you a little extreme here, “to the death” :)
You’re messing with me. I’m very confused
Ah, there’s an idea for another name change, Jack. “Deluded” and “Lib” is a redundancy. :)
You must be confused by Thomas’ accent coming through psychically – he being a white immigrant and all.
The back and forth between you two is always entertaining. You’re like ships passing in the night – only one is communicating in morse code, and the other in semaphore.
I’ll begin typing all my comments en espanol, add to the confusion.
Don’t forget that movie star smile! Americans love the people that have the look.
And he is tall too
are we talking about obama or reagan?
“You must be confused by Thomas’ accent coming through psychically – he being a white immigrant and all.”
You hit the nail on the head Hans, thanks :)
“…- only one is communicating in morse code, and the other in semaphore.”
Should I guess who is who here :)
no “reality” we are discussing Abe Lincoln 8-)
Well Thomas we should work on our communication skills. Hi, I’m Jack, I use a lot of hyperbole that you take seriously even when I don’t mean it to be so. :p
You’re like ships passing in the night – yeah, one’s from the admiralty while the other’s a pirate :-)
no “reality” we are discussing Abe Lincoln – well “thomas r.”, he was rather tall but I don’t know that many people would consider him to have had a movie star smile. Maybe you mean clinton?
I wanna be the pirate.
I try to give you some support and look what you do to yourself!!!
;-)
I think you’re getting people to dislike me more. You should start mocking me.
Hi Chris Arsenault,
You make an interesting point. These people gave no thought to the men and women who would have to risk their safety and even their lives to come to their rescue when they went on this foolish venture. There was just something about the penquins standing there observing all of this that struck me as so funny.
It reminds me of people who take dangerous risks, i.e. climbing mountains in dangerous conditions, with no thought to the people who will risk their lives, and even lose their lives, in an effort to save them.
Thank you for pointing that out.
I think you’re getting people to dislike me more.
I don’t need others to get me to dislike others. I do fine on my own, thank you. Just call me an equal opportunity hater.
I was only joking. :(
I’ll give the matter some thought Liberal Deluded Pro-lifer
I was really just kidding. But now I sad. :/
Make your mind up chap, what do you want? Praise or condemnation?
You might make a good pirate, but you’d only ever be a junior rank. So there! :p
All I want is for every single person of all religions, political ideology, and social status I ever meet to like me. I have very realistic goals.
I’d obviously be Jack Sparrow if I were a pirate.
I have very realistic goals – no more or less so than a few others around here ;-)
Do you think you have the sartorial elegance and style of carriage that Sparrow displays?
I’d be more like his dad.
Some people I could mention would do a good job of Davy Jones!
Hmm, well considering how confused I am all the time, I think I might be more likely to be Will Turner. “Uh, what’s going on! Follow Jack Sparrow, get betrayed again! Follow the pretty girl, nearly get killed! What’s going on???” Lol yeah there it is.
(I really got annoyed with Will Turner, especially when my daughter makes me play him when we play Pirates of the Carribean games, she gets to be either Jack or Elizabeth).
Given some of the stuff I have seen dished up to you Will Turner might well be appropriate :-)
Turner sucks! He’s everyone’s punching bag and he whines all the time. Wait…
Hi Jack 5:01PM
Vous devez parler l’anglais. Jill ne sera pas tres heureuse si vous parlez l’espagnol.
No hablo frances!! No se lo que esta pasando!
(as always, apologies for being too lazy to find all the accents to make sentences actually correct lol.)
Hi Jack,
Parlez anglais! Je ne comprend pas l’espagnol!
No. Frances es una lengua mal. Espanol es el mejor.
Leave Frances out of this. But she believes Francais is superior, just for your information.
Lol Francia is the country, francés is the language.
(there I got the accent on there properly, happy?)
Uh, no. France is the country (only pronounced “Frahntz”). Francais is the language. But I will be happy if you tell me how to make an accent agou. I could write all my computer knowledge on one page.
You’re speaking the wrong language, comprade. Todavía me gusta tu, no se preocupe.
I just do it online, I have no clue how to do accents and such on my actual computer, lol, why do you think I rarely bother? http://spanish.typeit.org/
Ninja Ronin
I have a novel idea my dear people. How about English only? We are in the United States of America after all. I am purist just in case you want to know.
BTW: I took French in high school over Spanish.
Hi Thomas R.
Lighten up. Jack and I are just having a little fun. :)
Yeah, lighten up Thomas. Post something in Polish or whatever Eastern European language you speak, you won’t tell me straight out lol.
I think everyone should be bilingual, it’s better for your brain. And the US is one of the few developed countries where we don’t teach our kids languages expecting them to actually know them, even though we’re surrounded by countries that speak other languages. Seems silly to not expect people to learn to speak it passably.
That’s a good idea, but we should cincentrate first on English. Look at how much grammar and especiall spelling we’ve forgottyen from our school days.
And I’m afraid we’re going to devolve into twitterese
I’m amused that you made a typo while you lament the degradation of language lol.
Oh that was the joke. I seriously am slow, aren’t I?
I wish. I’m proving that a night owl’s brain is no good before 3 p,m.
That and I’m not used to typing on my new laptop. I got it so I could have the tv in the background, but a rickety table isn’t as good as a desk.
Ha. Sleeping is for wimps anyway!
I do regret that I didn’t learn to write Spanish well when I learned to speak it, I barely learned to write English! My kids are already speaking it about as well as I do, and the school my son is in now teaches in both Spanish and English, which is good. I think it’s good for them, it builds strong language skills and being bilingual gives you better job prospects, especially if you can write well in both languages.
When I refer to myself as a language purist I am referring to the “cleanliness” of language. I have a preference for languages that remain free from outside influences. Spanish or French?
But I do agree that bilingualism is a good thing but not under all circumstances either ;) bu I do think its time to learn Chinese :)
And since you insist Jack, I am a polaco..
Ha! I knew you were Polish! 95% Catholic country indeed.
“When I refer to myself as a language purist I am referring to the “cleanliness” of language. I have a preference for languages that remain free from outside influences. Spanish or French?”
Then you should hate English. English is a hodge-podge, gots all kindsa different words mixed in from different language. It’s West Germanic but it’s got a lot of Latin influence as well. And Norse.
And English speakers can’t pronounce Spanish words correctly lol. No one rolls their “r”s, and you guys say “M-EX-eh-c0” when it’s actually “Meh-hi-co”. And no one pronounces San Diego, Miami, etc right! ;)
Hans your January 7, 2014 at 1:56 pm comment is right on target. You would think that a person with my background would support the butchering of English. No. Children today speak such a massacred English due to all the “modern” influences, it would be wise for Americans to pay attention to all this “modernization.”
Meh-hee-co, actually. I forgot that English speakers rarely pronounce Spanish “i”s correctly lol.
Hi Mary, since yesterday I am as light as a feather ;)
Concerning that last cartoon. You gotta admit that Mother Nature does have quite a sense of humor!
“Then you should hate English. English is a hodge-podge, gots all kindsa different words mixed in from different language. It’s West Germanic but it’s got a lot of Latin influence as well. And Norse.”
Jack, refer to my post to Hans.
Lenguas son fluid, not really “pure”. Unless you have an isolated language that isn’t from the main “trees”, any language has borrowed other words or bases from others. Because of globalization a lot of languages are dying out, we’re eventually going to be down to English, Mandarin, Spanish, Hindi and some forms of Arabic lol.
don’t forget Chinese and Russian :)
Well Mandarin is the main one in China. I think the second most widely spoken Chinese language is Cantonese and it’s not even a percentage of speakers versus Mandarin.
I totally forgot about Russian lol.
My son came home from his new school yesterday and asked me why we weren’t Mexican, lol, because apparently all Spanish speakers in his school (and on the West Coast) are Mexican-American. No kid we’re Cuban-American, it’s a completely different culture!
I think English is the richest language. The French can be pretty possessive of french, not wanting to pollute it with other’s words., Yet I’ve been bugged on their behalf that people don’t know the difference between blond and blonde. And that when anglicized, cofident should at least be pronounced as “confide-ent” (males only!).
Jack you may enjoy this blend of Spanish and Hindi:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yDv0WSgXJVg
Pssh, French and their “purity”. Spanish speakers are happy to share words and take words, even if y’all butcher pronunciation quite badly, and then correct me when I pronounce it right. :)
Hans that’s a catchy song.
Yeah, I didn’t kniw Francia was Spanish for France. That’s what the ancient kingom of the Franks was called, in part of today’s France.
I can almost hear you pronouncing it wrong Hans. ;)
Frantzia?
Frahn-see-ah. Spanish vowels are easy, there’s only one way to pronounce them!
That’s what I meant. German would be sort of a “z”, French a “t” and Spanish even softer as a “c”.. However they’re not good at a “th”. Theuir tongues sound like they’re shot uo with novacaine.
I know, I’m messing with you. Spanish is an implosive language, not explosive like English. You don’t open your lips as much speaking Spanish as you do English. And my name sucks in Spanish, because there’s no hard “J” sound (think Jose how Spanish speakers say it, that’s how “J”s are pronounced). My mother could never say my name correctly (she’s obviously not the one who named me).
So your name in Spanish is Hek! Now, that’s pretty funny :)
Lol okay Tomás!
Its Tomasz Hek. The “sz” is pronounced as “sh.” (t-o-m-a-sh) ;)
I always say your name in my head as Tomás, because the only Thomas names I’ve met are Hipanic. :) Pronounced “toe-mAHss”, emphasis on the “a”.
And it’s actually “h-AH-ck” if you’re butchering my very British Isles first name in Spanish lol. The first “h” sounds like a soft “ck” kinda. I’m really bad at explaining pronunciation online. :)
The “a” is pronounced just like in the Spanish alphabet. The “sh” is not as soft as in ‘mash’ but a little harsher (more roll of the tongue so to speak).
I do find Eastern European names difficult to pronounce, I haven’t heard many speakers so it’s pretty foreign to me. I loooovveee Eastern European accents though, tbh. You guys get the best accents.
Hey, back home they tell me I don’t sound Polish at all even though I speak it fluently. So the accent thing is a catch 22.
When I speak Spanish I have what they call a “Miami Cuban” accent. It’s not really Cuban, too much American influence (even though I didn’t grow up in Miami). People can pick out where I come from if they are good with Spanish accents. I speak English with a light southern drawl (that thankfully is fading the longer I don’t live in the rural south).
I had a feeling you’d correct Thomas on Heck vs. Hack, Jack. (Though which one is better?)
My grandfather would’ve called yoiu Yack! ;)
Yackety yack, don’t talk back.
Hans – we don’t pronounce the “c” as a “k” in Polish thus my reason for leaving the “c” out ;) The two letters have different soundex in Slavic-based languages.
Try this: Jacek.
It wouldn’t be Hack like hacking with a machete, lol. It’d be Hack like hocking up a loogie. Gross. What a dumb name lol.
But I do get the Yack connotation ;)
As long as no one ever, ever sings that stupid “Hit the road, Jack” song to me I don’t care what people call me. ;)
Or “Jumping Jack Flash” or that “Jack and Dianne”, or ESPECIALLY “Captain Jack”.
And don’t talk about nursery rhymes or children’s tales lol.
I’m changing my name.
Jack is usually a nickname for John. In which case we’d actually have the same name – just a spelling variation.
Lol yes John. Actually, technically, since Jack is diminutive of John (or used to be before it became it’s own name), my name in Spanish would be “Juanito”, because Juan is John, and Juanito is diminutive of Juan. But no one has ever called me “Juanito”, maybe if my mother and I had gotten along at all she would have instead of yelling “Hock” at me haha.
I actually didn’t know Hans was a form of John (like Sean is? and Owen?). The more you know.
Don’t you like Hek without the “c?” I can always call you Jacek!
Lol you may call me what you please. I don’t know how to pronounce “Jacek” though. I may begin introducing myself as Juanito to Spanish speakers with heavy accents or who can’t speak English though, I do feel bad when they feel bad for not pronouncing Jack right lol.
May I call you Tomás? ;)
I always wanted to be the Polish version of a casanova, why not ;)
My paternal grandpa’s name was John but everyone called him Jack. Awesome name for an awesome man.
Prax you’ve added another piece of data to my hypothesis that all men born before like 1950 were named either David, Michael or John (Jack). :D
I’m not sure about Sean or Owen, The original gaelic may have a different origin,
But it’s Hans – Johann – Johannes through the Germanic – Scandinavian branch and John through the Saxon branch. I think Juan may have been an appropriation, unlesss the Romance and Germaic languages had a common root a few thousand years ago!
Could be. Peter was Simon Bar-Jona. (John – son. A relative!)
I like Jan (pronounced Yaan). Has a nice sound to it ;)
