Pro-life vid of day: Formerly conjoined twins are valedictorians
by Hans Johnson
When Emily and Caitlin Copeland were found to be conjoined twins over 18 years ago, it was a grim prognosis for their mother Crystal. They were born joined at the chest sharing a liver, and their organs were discharging through only one of them. So their surgeon Dr. Kevin Lally decided to wait for them to grow and get stronger before separating them.
He did so when they were ten months old, and after a rocky start they grew up healthy and have just graduated as co-valedictorians from Houston’s Lutheran High North.

That is really cool I’m glad science has progressed to the point where people with these issues can be healthy and lead great lives I hope we get to the point where other “hopeless” and grim fetal and birth prognoses can be treated as well. It would certainly take the wind out of the sails out of the “just kill them in utero to ‘prevent suffering'”.

Hi Jack. How are you and your kids doing?
I totally agree that we can with stories like these “take the wind out of the sails of the “just kill them in utero to ‘prevent suffering’ arguments. Isn’t it great being pro-life?

I’m me, lol. The kids are awesome and amazing as always.
What really gets me is when pro-choicers talk about how stuff like mental disabilities, some physical issues present at birth, etc as if science is set on stone and we’ll never find ways to improve the lives of such people. Science and technology is growing in leaps and bounds. These kids would have died young a century or two ago, now they are doing great.

Awesome points Jack! In 1966, a doctor told my mother of the grim outcome of her Rh mis-match pregnancy and fetus’ hemolytic anemia — the child would likely die or be physically and/or mentally disabled. The doctor recommended abortion. Fortunately my mother found a new doctor, and I was born and have turned out mostly ok :-)

Glad to hear you are doing ok and that the kids are great Jack. I believe God blessed you with them to give you a reason to keep fighting to live, to allow you to see how wonderful a healthy loving parent-child relationship can be and to show you and others that the cycle of abuse can be broken. Our kids have been the joy of my husband’s life, like I have said here before, with God’s help he was able to break the cycle of an abusive, alcoholic, deadbeat dad who ran away from his responsibility and abandoned them (btw his grandfather had done the same thing to his father).
Eric I love your testimony. I know of women who were told to abort for varieties of possible genetic or congenital maladies and ended up with either wonderful, healthy babies when the test gave false positive or they had babies with correctable problems that their children could overcome with proper treatment. Even in those rare cases where children did have disabilities they ended up being a blessing to their families. No one deserves a death sentence because they have mental and physical disabilities. May God help us to stop killing our children.

Thanks Prolifer L, just glad my mom wasn’t duped by the narcissist of the first doctor.

They may have shared a liver, but somebody needs to remind them that they are eating for two, not one.
