Comedian Jimmy Fallon says movie makes abortion “funny”
It’s getting great reviews because it’s a serious issue, but you make it lighthearted, you make it funny….
Good for you.
~ Late-night comedian Jimmy Fallon complimenting actress Jenny Slate on her performance in the abortion comedy Obvious Child (which was actually a box-office bomb), via Newsbusters, August 4
It is still in a few theaters, and still trying to claw its way up to $3 million in box office gross receipts.

The distribution company paid “in the low six figures” for the independent production. I don’t know if the production company and actors made or lost any money at that price. But it does not appear that the distributors will recover their cost anytime soon.
They gave it their best shot — A recognizable star, a talented comedienne, snarky and irreverent material (which is popular style, these days). Abortion is just to real and raw to be taken lightly for comedic fodder.
Such a movie needs a heroine who overcomes her adversity. The movie flops when she lays it all upon her child to carry it off the screen.

“Recognizable star?” I never heard of this person before, but I don’t watch Saturnday Night Live, which hasn’t been funny for literally decades.
Sounds like they’re trying to beat a dead horse. I am going to see either “Hercules” or “Get On Up” this weekend. And Jimmy Fallon is such a shill for Barky, abortion, — ugh!

Off-topic here, but remember how last year there was a post & comment thread here about making & distributing pro-life drop cards? I finally got around to making some to distribute. The ones I made are for women facing an unplanned pregnancy & I’ll be placing the cards next to the pregnancy tests at big box stores. Here’s what they look like:

Ok, the HTML image code doesn’t seem to have worked, but I’m on a mobile browser so I can’t be sure, so here’s the links to the images of my pro-life drop card.

You killed your baby and made some jokes about it! Yay!

I’m thinking the producers booked this guest, and Fallon tried to be gracious as possible. Politically, he seems willing to give it to both sides, so I’m giving him some benefit of the doubt here…

I look forward to Hollywood’s efforts to make spousal abuse, rape, hunger, and homelessness “light hearted and funny” as well.

I don’t know about “light hearted and funny,” but I do think we will see darker themes, and the rise of the anti-hero, i.e. “bad guys” as protagonists, reflective of a changing social and cultural mood. “Gladiators,” organized crime, monsters…..
Whereas the 1960s, 1980s, and 1990s were economic “good times,” and movies reflected that, the 1970s was a “down decade.” We went from expansionist inclusionism with Star Trek in the 60s, i.e. “Aliens are people too,” to ‘The Godfather’ in the 70s.
The 2000s seem pretty much “sideways” to me, not bad but far from good, too, and all the while the underlying economic situation has deteriorated. If the chickens are coming home to roost, then the 1970s are gonna look good, IMO.

I confess that I have dropped out of pop culture, entirely.
One of the perks of being a grown-up, I suppose.
Anyhow, it is hard to see the trajectory of the culture that one lives in. We are fighting for a Culture of Life. We may have won already. Or we may have lost already. Only the future will tell how we are doing now.
I concur with Doug. The economic future looks dire. Catastrophic. And no one is doing anything about it, because it will have a political cost in the present. So let’s hope that we have a better leader than Barry when the time comes… and maybe, our civilization will not collapse.

1 unfunny person + 1 unfunny person = low ratings. You are now officially abortion-at-risk, Jimmy Fallon. Not a very fun club, now is it? How about pull a 180, and Think + LIFE! instead :-)

Will liberal Hollywood ever warm up to a “funny” movie about animal abuse?
