Not that I’m aware of, but in countries where girls’ education is often cut off after puberty, there are charities that distribute fee tampons and pads in an effort to keep girls in school. Obviously not what Valenti is talking about, but just thought I’d mention in case readers are interested; it’s a great cause.

I believe that North Korea provides such food, fuel, housing, and personal care products as the government believes the people need.
Of course, all of the people are worked as slaves. And the necessities of daily personal consumption are never enough for comfort.
Unfortunately, I don’t expect that North Korea wants Jessica Valenti.

Don’t know anything about this writer but I assume she is writing/researching about the lack of feminine hygiene products in some countries that cause girls to miss school and/or work for a week every month? Don’t know why that would be the Quote of the Day on your site.

In 2006 I traveled to Spain and in the Barcelona airport I needed sanitary products but couldn’t find them anywhere, not even in the ladies room! I thought this was odd since Spain is a modern developed country.
I read that sanitary pads were developed during WWI when it was discovered that the bandages used to dress soldiers wounds could be put to good use during “that time of the month.” Before that women used rags (hence the crude term “on the rag”) and even bundles of straw. Ouch! Some historians think that Lizzie Borden got away with killing her stepfather and mother by putting the bloodied rags used in the crime in “that” bucket. The motive was supposedly that her stepfather was sexually abusing her, Lizzies mother knew about it, but did nothing to stop it.
Also I don’t think there’s anything wrong with Valenti’s post.

Whittney & phillymiss:
Jessica Valenti just got a double-mention in yesterday’s Blog Buzz.
First, she got an award from Planned Parenthood for a tweet urging women to have public sex in Hobby Lobby stores.
And then…. many of her blog claims were debunked by a Canadian bioethics writer.

Like Amanda Marcotte and Robin Marty, Mizz Valenti is someone we need to know about and deal with. She has been an effective propagandist.

Exactly Courtnay,
Maybe a little fishing expedition here. If this country or that subsidizes tampons and pads, then how can we in the United States do any less?
Are they any less essential to women’s health than birth control?

No. But I don’t use tampons. I have a 20-pack of wash cloths I bought at Walmart for about $5. They work beautifully and last years.
I also don’t use birth control, which means my need for such items is not regular.

” Hey, know where I can get free tampons?”
If you live in the U.S., check the Tampax & Platex websites for free sample offers.
(Long story short, once during college I ordered a bunch of free samples of hygiene items before Christmas break & after break I came back to a full mailbox.)
For helping girls in other countries, you can make & donate pads or contribute money to funds for distributing commercially-sold pads through a number of sources.:
