Pro-life vid of the day: Happy Thanksgiving!
by Hans Johnson
The famous painting “Freedom From Want” by Norman Rockwell evokes many pleasant holiday memories (and confirms the inordinate strength of our mothers and grandmothers)!
One of those memories may well be the singing of the church hymn “We Gather Together” written in 1597 by the Dutch poet and composer Adraianus Valerius. After more than four centuries, there are many versions of this hymn: up-tempo, one by Celtic Woman, and one by children. There is a fine a capella rendition, too. But like most things associated with holidays, perhaps old-fashioned is best….

The closest relatives remaining to me are first, second and third cousins and while spending Thanksgiving by myself in my own home is not unsettling to my long time conservative bachelor way of life, nevertheless, I was uplifted in a sentimental way today when I checked in to the Jill Stanek blog and viewed the famous family Thanksgiving painting by traditional artist Norman Rockwell and also the You-tube “We gather together” musical rendition accompanied with pictures featuring the first Thanksgiving by the Pilgrims of Plymouth Plantation. My own Christian faith has a lot in common with the Pilgrims and I admire their courage and perseverance and the faithful servant leadership qualities of their Governor William Bradford and pastor William Brewster. Thanks also to Mrs. Sarah Hale (1788-1879) who worked so tirelessly to get Thanksgiving established as an American holiday.

Raymond,
Happy Thanksgiving, from one conservative bachelor to another. In case you missed it, last year’s post featured Mrs. Hale, although the video no longer works, and unfortunately I don’t remember what it was!

To Hans Johnson,
Thanks Hans for your reply regarding my comment on this year’s Thanksgiving 2014 post, which I noticed earlier had your byline under the post. No, I don’t think I saw the 2013 post on Thanksgiving regarding Sarah Hale. But I clicked on the thread you posted and viewed it just a few minutes ago.

The Blaze also did a piece on Sarah Hale last year just after I’d finished mine.

I know I’m late, but Happy Thanksgiving. I was fortunate enough to spend my holiday with a group of extended family members, which we haven’t done since I was little.
It’s Christmas time now, and soon, it will be New Year’s. 2014 was the year of Pro Life for me. I know I could look back on it all and throw everything away as a blip, a misrake. But I won’t do that. This year of Pro Life enabled me to acknowledge a hole in my heart that has been there since childhood. We’re not ashamed anymore.
This Christmas, I will make a special ornament for my two lost siblings, just to let their spirits know they have not been forgotten.
I am thankful for all this blog is doing to stop the atrocity that hurt our family and countless others. I may not always walk with you, but know I’m flashing a thumbs-up from the sidelines. ;)
I hope you all had a Happy Thanksgiving. God Bless. ?
