Pro-life vid of day: Girl sues parents for pressuring her to abort
A 16-year-old girl has filed suit against her parents, who she says are trying to coerce her to get an abortion. Among the claims are that her mother “invited the paternal grandparents to a bar for further discussion where she suggested that she might slip her an abortion pill through deception” and that her father threatened not only her, but the baby’s father and grandmother.
Her attorney, Stephen Case of the Texas Center for Defense of Life, says she has the right to refuse because “What Roe established is minors have the choice. And when they do make the choice, folks are shocked they want to carry the baby.”
LifeNews reports that just yesterday, a judge from the 215th District Court of Harris County, Texas, issued a temporary restraining order “prohibit[ing] the parents… from coercing her to have an abortion against her will.”
From ABC News:
Another hearing is scheduled for tomorrow. Fox News also has a legal discussion of the case.

Wow. These “parents” of hers are MONSTERS:
Where’s Gloria Allred when you need her?
Courtnay, she is no doubt doggedly pursuing Herman Cain for those very serious charges she leveled during the presidential campaign…
You cannot legally force anyone to abort. Abortionists are to screen women to make sure this is THEIR decision and theirs alone. No force. No coercion.
Yet it happens ALL THE TIME!!

These parents sound horribly abusive. Threatening to give a 16-year-old girl an “a** whoopin'” for not agreeing to kill her baby? Sick. I hope that she and her baby stay safe.
Parental pressure to abort is probably not rare because parents are afraid they will get stuck raising the baby instead of the teen mother herself and that the father, if known, will be of no assistance. They might also want an abortion because it can be kept private. In some circles, there is still stigma attached to out of wedlock pregnancy. However, since that stigma has decreased in most places, it seems to me that fear of having to raise a grandchild when they don’t feel prepared to is what leads many parents to pressure teen girls to abort.

I think you are probably right in a lot of cases. I also think some (generally non-abusive before the pregnancy) parents think that they are “saving” their daughter from making a huge mistake. Those type of parents might just need help and someone to support the whole family, maybe the whole family could get counseling or something. This girl’s parents seem to be just plain ol’ abusive, though, most normal parents don’t threaten their kids with beatings for not obeying. If I had to guess I would think that the threats of violence became reality more than once in her childhood. This is all personal opinion of mine, though, I could be wrong.
God bless those parents that support their sons and daughters and welcome their grandchildren. Maybe not the way they hoped but they help and support them to choose life.
Doubt it. This girl has 4 dead siblings courtesy of Grandma, and it sounds like those 4 deaths really took a toll on her and her spouse. If this is the behavior of the father towards his own daughter and grandchild, one has to wonder what his role was in the execution of the other 4 children.
A similar event, but less drastic, led me to give up on playing “nice” by being pro-choice. I was working in aprofessional setting, and a colleague had a young-adult sister or niece who was foolishly unexpectedly pregnant.
This was quite a drama for her family, as everyone lobbied this young woman to hurry and abort, while the young woman was unsure, and to some degree wanted to have the baby.
Another co-worker or two chimed in and showed favor for this abort-the-baby view as -duh- the most obvious thing in the world.
The rhetoric was all about ‘she will mess up her life,’ ‘she needs to finish college,’ etc.
Up to that point, I guess I really had bought the overly dramatic picture of women in dire need for abortion to avert some drastic tragedy – but here it was in its reality – foolish people not notably doing anything special to avert such a big, obvious consequence, and all social influences pressuring to abort for these selfish convenience reasons.
And everyone on the bandwagon. These liberated women were oppressing this young woman as much as they could to railroad her into a decision with time pressure and social pressure and shame-based ridicule.
That was a decade before I became a Christian, so I was a pro-life secular humanist for quite some time. I still remember that episode and shudder at how ghastly we educated liberals act in these circumstances. Ughh. Trust women. don’t build in decent checks to ensure an informed decision is being made – so we can informally harangue those who are unexpectrdly pregnant with no support.
When I talk to people at the crisis pregnancy center we support, a common thing to hear is that the counselor was the ONLY pro-life supportive voice.
When we educated liberals WANT social pressure to be th emost powerful force in the universe, such as with our recent fascination with the bullying issue, then social pressure is everything; when we don;t want it to be anything, such as with abortion decision-making, it is nothing. As long as our views line up with Karl Marx and against the nukelar family and against God, everything is justified.
I hope this young woman’s story inspired others to 1 behave responsibly and 2 stand up to this bullying pressure.
One of the big news websites covered this story (I think it was ABC) and I thought I’d venture down to the comments section. UGH!!! So many comments agreed with the pregnant teen’s father, it was sickening. AND, of course, the sentiment was what a stupid girl for getting pregnant. There was no mention of being stupid for having sex, of course, because y’know, only pro-lifers seem to be dumb enough to think sex leads to babies.
Play Madonna’s “Papa Don’t Preach” for these parents.
They should be charged criminally for Assault with a Deadly Weapon, Attempted Poisoning, Attempted Murder in the First Degree, and Conspiracy to Commit Murder. The reason these counts are not double jeopardy is because the victim of the Attempted Murder is the fetus, whereas the assault and poisoning counts are crimes against the mother. Separate victim equals separate crime.
