Just weeks after a panel on CNN refused to see the worth of a preborn baby’s right to life, there was outrage on the same network over that of an animal’s.  Controversy erupted recently over the decision (choice) of the Copenhagen Zoo to kill a young, healthy giraffe because they couldn’t use him in their breeding program.

Anderson Cooper asked the zoo’s scientific director, Bengt Holst, why they just couldn’t transfer the animal to another zoo or preserve, and he answered that they couldn’t be sure if it would have a good life elsewhere – that it might be “substandard”. (If you think this sounds reminiscent of arguments against the adoption option you’re not alone.) In response, Cooper asked: “Doesn’t the life of the animal itself have some value…?”

Later, still puzzled, he turned to Jack Hanna of the Columbus Zoo and noted: “What he seems to be saying is that the animal itself doesn’t really have any right to live.” But just before this Hanna summed it all up: “Who are we to judge, Anderson, who should live and not live a short life?”
