Pro-life video of the day: The boardwalk babies

by Hans Johnson

The history of incubators for the care of prematurely born infants is a fascinating one. Perhaps no man had a greater impact on the innovation and popularity of this nascent medical technology than Dr. Martin Couney (pictured at right at the Pan-American Exhibition at Buffalo, N.Y. in 1901).

At a time when around a third of these babies would die, he brought incubators to be displayed at fairs, exhibitions, and amusement parks, charging the parents not a penny,  but relying on ticket sales for funds. After a brief time in Berlin in 1896, he came to America, making a big splash at Luna Park on Coney Island.

Among attractions like sword swallowers, strongmen, and bearded ladies, you would see a banner declaring: “All the World Loves a Baby” with a barker beckoning passers-by to see the babies through the glass walls of each compartment. (One of those barkers was a young Englishman named Archibald Leach who would become movie star Cary Grant.) Despite the surrounding atmosphere, within these mini-hospitals the nurses were strictly professional.

As controversial as this enterprise was, its success was inarguable. One of the earliest of the many thousands saved was Dr. Couney’s daughter Hildegarde, who became his assistant. You can see the story here of how one woman’s silver cup led to the discovery that she was one of those babies, at the 1933 Chicago World’s Fair.

Duck Dynasty wife “fretful” over “entrapment” during interview

alanlisarobertsonby Kelli

Dear Friends, please be in prayer for me today.

I am fretful over the interview with HuffPostLive yesterday.

I am pro-choice only when it’s God’s choice. I was so flustered over her [the interviewer’s] questions & just wasn’t aware that she was trying to trap me. Call me naive.

I had an abortion @ 16 & I clearly stated that it was a decision that I’ve regretted all my life. I also stated that I thought God was the only person qualified to take a life because he made the life.

Maybe I will get to minister to people who otherwise would shut me out but I am clearly pro-God & pro-life. I hate entrapment but failed to see it happening.

~ Lisa Robertson, wife of Alan Robertson (both pictured) of Duck Dynasty fame, writing on Facebook of the controversy surrounding an interview in which she responded, “Yes, I would,” when asked whether or not she would consider herself “pro-choice,” as quoted by Saynsumthn’s Blog, January 7

Pro-life video of the day: Young men speak out for life

by Hans Johnson

As surely as it takes two to tango, it takes (ideally) two to have and raise a child. The 28 young men in this video weigh in on what they consider to be not a “women’s issue” or a “men’s issue” but a children’s issue. Though the video is over a year old, it is very relevant in light of the recent “bro-choice” movement in favor of abortion:

Bishop Tobin won’t attend inauguration of pro-choice governor

Bishop-Tobinby Carder

Over the weekend I did receive a formal written invitation to the Inauguration, the courtesy of which I appreciated.

However, as previously announced I will be offering Holy Mass at the Cathedral at that same time to ask for God’s blessings upon our state and nation and our public servants.

I should add, though, that in conscience, it would always be a problem for me personally to attend the inauguration of any public official who promotes or supports abortion, which we consider to be a very grave moral evil.

~ Roman Catholic Bishop Thomas J. Tobin explaining why he would not attend the inauguration of newly-elected pro-choice governor of Rhode Island, Gina Raimondo, Providence Journal, January 5

Despite charade, abortion proponents still running from A-word

100406ScarletARecently, abortion proponents decided if you can’t beat, join ’em, and began urging their people to counter post-abortive stories of regret with post-abortive stories of relief.

They launched the 1 in 3 Campaign and began writing articles explaining the importance of coming out.

Even Planned Parenthood president Cecile Richards finally admitted to having an abortion skeleton in her closet, claiming it was easy peasy, even if something about it kept her from sharing the good news beyond her inner circle for years and years.

Abortion proponents now say it is wrong to connect abortions with sob stories, which further stigmatize the deed as something sought only in dire circumstances or for catastrophic reasons.

So they exalt the “freedom to f*** up,” lauding those like post-abortive Merritt Tierce, who bragged about not one but two! abortions in the New York Times, one garnered after an affair in which she was unsure of paternity, and the other sought after her attempt to trap a man via pregnancy failed. Tramps trump tragedy.

But do they practice what they preach? Only when convenient.

Despite the charade, the industry knows everyone but them thinks abortion is skanky, to say the least.

So, while Planned Parenthood committed nearly one million of the three million U.S. abortions of the past three years, it continues to use math gimmicks to insist abortion accounts for a minuscule portion of its business.

And in a Cosmo puff piece a few days ago, “How to get hired at Planned Parenthood,” Senior HR Officer Gaitre Lorick failed to ever bring up the a-word. It came up only once, in the article’s intro. Abortion is obviously not an employment magnet.

Lorick wrote candidates are expected to have “a basic understanding” of the organization, and to check out Planned Parenthood’s website for details. But there is no a-word at the supplied link. Lorick also touted Planned Parenthood’s internship program, but that link omits the a-word as well.

At the Washington Post, 16 “influential” feminists submitted what they hope to accomplish in 2015, and again, the a-word never came up. The closest was one invocation of the vague term “reproductive rights.”

Everyone knows you can’t be a feminist if you’re not pro-abortion. It’s the litmus test.

But the feminists listed just about everything but abortion as important agenda items for the new year – living wages, gender equality, police brutality, domestic violence, LGBT justice, digital dualism, online harassment, hate speech, rape, quality childcare, queer and trans people of color in media, campus violence, immigration, incarceration, and even women in online game development.

Is abortion that secure? Hardly.

Amanda Marcotte blames the “anti-choice movement’s relentless propaganda about ‘abortion regret'” and the “ever-misogynistic gossip press” for a stigma against abortion that just won’t die.

Marcotte needs to talk to her own, for instance, Michael Odenthal of Highbrow Magazine.

Odenthal just wrote a laudibly pro-abortion piece (“Conservative America’s dangerous war on abortion”) wherein he promoted the a-word 21 times, except, strangely, within the three paragraphs where he sympathetically told the story of a now incarcerated Pennsylvania mother who illegally ordered pills online to “terminate” her pregnant 16-yr-old daughter’s “pregnancy,” which landed the hemorrhaging girl in the hospital.

“The daughter had a miscarriage,” wrote Odenthal, “as the pills were intended to induce.”

Um, no. The daughter had an abortion. Why not say it straight? Because in this case the a-word doesn’t play well?

Mixed messaging from abortion advocates, often subconscious, betrays the reality they may not even realize they know… this because abortion stigma is inborn, pardon the pun.

Abortion is unnatural. Abortion is violent. It is inherently abhorrent to kill one’s own offspring.

The fact is, abortion stigma will never die… simply because of that which does.

  • Secular Pro-Life has discovered some interesting nuggets in Planned Parenthood’s latest annual report. For instance, PP hails the box office flop Obvious Child as a “major victory.” They also boast of an increased college campus presence, bringing them to over 200 chapters. However, there are more than 4 times as many pro-life college campus groups. SPL’s personal favorite is the fact that PP credits their own organization with preventing an extra 1,000 unplanned pregnancies even though they show a decrease in dispensing contraceptives.

  • Suzy B remembers the remarkable story of a premature baby who was saved by a freezer bag:

Baby Ellis was born at 24 weeks, when he could have been legally aborted. Instead, his parents and doctors fought to save him and he is now a “happy and cheeky” 1 year-old.

  • Wesley J. Smith points out that while Slate is publishing photos of babies just seconds out of the womb, there are “some very prominent bioethicists – past and present – certain… these littlest people are killable – either because they are denigrated as human “non-persons” or because they have terminal or seriously disabling conditions.”
  • Survivors of the Abortion Holocaust show how we can have a conversation with those in the “mushy middle” on abortion, eliminating the middle ground so that they truly choose a side.

  • Real Choice recalls the anniversary of Kermit Gosnell and his “House of Horrors.” The failure of the Pennsylvania Department of Health to investigate complaints was nothing short of a political move.
  • ProLifeBlogs links to The Black Kettle’s post that says 650 babies are euthanized yearly in the Netherlands.
  • Saynsumthn’s Blog tells of the many organized (and fully boozed) pro-abortion celebrations planned around the country, marking 42 years of Roe v. Wade. Some are even hosted by liberal churches.

Pro-life vid of the day: “I’m done with being pro-choice”

by Hans Johnson

With every new year, the new generation is facing the facts more honestly on the subject of abortion.

Stefanie Nicholas is one of those Millennials who has really thought through the reality and the implications of this controversy. She explains her reasoning for abandoning her knee-jerk pro-choice position to become staunchly pro-life in the following video.
