• Big Blue Wave discusses Canada’s attempt to curb sex selection abortions by requiring that women obtaining ultrasounds have a doctor’s requisition and be at least 20 weeks gestation. Undercover operations have shown ultrasound facilities willing to ignore the law.

• Secular Pro-Life writes that the CEO of Sir Richard’s condom company intends to donate one condom to a developing country for each condom purchased because “if everyone bought our condoms, we could really change the world.” SPL says:
  

  According to the CDC, while condoms are highly effective at preventing HIV transmission, the typical use failure rate for condoms as a contraceptive is a dismal eighteen percent. People often fail to make that distinction, and therefore do not appreciate the chances of pregnancy as fully as they should. No doubt that misunderstanding will be magnified in a region that has little in the way of healthcare access and sex education.

You might think that the stunning lack of oversight in this case – multiple government agencies failed to put an end to his illegal practices over the years – would prompt calls for new legislation to make it harder for criminals like [Kermit] Gosnell to do what he did for as long as he did. But Planned Parenthood has opposed the idea. It insists that no new regulations can stop a physician who has decided to disregard the law.

• Longtime abortion advocate and abortionist David Grimes tries to intentionally deceive Washington Post readers with this quote:
  

  David Grimes, former head of the CDC’s abortion surveillance branch, said clinics like Gosnell’s were commonplace before Roe v. Wade, the court case that legalized abortion. Today, the problem of substandard clinics is so small that the branch, which investigated problem clinics, no longer exists, he said.“The legalization of abortion stands out as a public health triumph,” he said. “Over 1,000 women died every year from illegal abortion in the 1940s. Now it’s less than a handful a year. That’s the story, not one aberrant doctor in Philadelphia.”

  Wait. 1,000 women died every year in the 1940’s? Wasn’t abortion legalized in the 1970’s? Why is Grimes using statistics from 30 years before abortion was legalized to make his case?

  Oh yeah, that’s right – because in 1972, 39 women (as opposed to over a thousand) died from illegal abortion. An additional 24 women died from legal abortion in 1972.

An article in The Atlantic is getting a lot of buzz.

Unexpected from a liberal rag came this piece by Karen Swallow Prior on March 22, “The case for getting married young”:

I reported yesterday on the Centers for Disease Control’s newly released Abortion Surveillance – United States, 2009, which reported the lowest rate and ratio of abortion in the U.S. since 1974.

There was another statistic in the Abortion Surveillance:

In 2008, the most recent year for which data were available, 12 women were reported to have died as a result of complications from known legal induced abortions. No reported deaths were associated with known illegal induced abortions.

Twelve women that we know of died from “safe and legal” abortions in the U.S. in 2008. And as Americans United for Life’s Charmaine Yoest noted to LifeNews.com, “That number is double the deaths reported the previous year and it’s the highest since 1994.”

According to the CDC, there have been 403 legal abortion-related deaths in the U.S. since 1973 (and 56 illegal), an average of 10 a year.

So where is the outcry from feminists?

Why, they’re all busy pointing their unrighteously indignant fingers at Ireland, where elective abortions are illegal, alleging that the tragic death of Savita Halappanavar proves abortion should be legal there – so women won’t die? In fact, abortion is legal in Ireland to save the life of a mother. It is a lie to claim Halappanavar’s death would have been averted were elective abortions legal in Ireland.

There is no evidence to suggest that contraceptive use increased that year – however, New points out that it was the first year that a majority of Americans identified themselves as pro-life.
