Women’s History Pop Quiz
By Valerie Ryan
We have many people from both sides of the abortion debate who consider themselves a feminist. I wonder which group knows more about Womens’ history?
I have a short Pop Quiz for us all to take to find out.
Now, I’m sure most of these can be found on a google search so we are going to go by the honor system. We will trust that there will be no cheating.
(these are not necessarily 1st American women to . . . )
1. Who was the first woman U.S. presidential candidate?
2. Who were the the co-founders of the womans suffrage movement?
3 . Who was the first person to be a U.S. flagmaker?
4. Who was the first woman to receive a medical degree?
5. Who was the first woman marine?
6. Who was the first woman whose invention received a patent (which was granted to her husband)?

I think in todays world we have to remember where we came from and that pro-choice and pro-life has nothing to do with feminism. All these accomplishments are examples of true feminists.
Bonus Question: Which feminist went to jail for voting?

I do think that Clinton is the first one “with a chance,” but there definitely were others — plural. I believe the first was Victoria something Woodhull — she was nominated by some extraneous party in the mid- to late-1800’s, I think.
@Alexandra: I know the first female state representative in the national congress was a woman from Montana sometime in the late 1800’s-early 1900’s. I wish I remembered her name and when she was elected.
Dr. Ruth FTW!

LOL! That would give my 84 year old ma a giggle.
First I want to say that I got all this information last year on the History Channels website during Women’s history month. I thought it was kinda cool that the first woman presidential candidate was in 1872 and that the first woman to receive a medical degree was in 1849.
We seem to have a belief that women over 100 years ago were forced into the kitchens and were slaves to their husbands. Even though that did happen, it was not the norm. Many husbands encouraged their wives to go against the norm, and many women say they would not have been able to accomplish what they did without their husbands support. And many women didn’t need a husband!
These women are the true hero’s of the feminist movement. Can you imagine going to jail just because you cast a vote? Sometimes we take for granted all that was done before us. Sometimes we forget that there is much more to being a woman than just “reproductive rights”.
Did you know that the Equal Rights Amendment was never passed? Sure, there were alot of problems with the original, but do you know what eventually stopped it from passing? Abortion. We do not have a constitutional right to be considered equal to men in the workplace and to receive the same pay as a man because abortion got into the amendment somehow. Both sides (Pro-choice and Pro-life) feel that it was the other side that did this. But in reality, in my opinion, it should have been removed. I have never been able to figure out how abortions are suppose to mean equality.
Several state ERA’s were passed, but havn’t done well holding up to scrutiny because there isn’t a federal law to fall back on.
What’s my point? I’m not sure! However, I think this blog has proven that we can discuss this topic in a civil manner (sometimes) and that we can work together to change things for the better for our daughters. In the long run, that is why we do what we do, our daughters. (or neices, cousins, sisters…….)
We need to remember that abortion is not the only “woman’s right” issue. It’s the issue that has most emotions attached to it, but it isn’t the only issue. Our daughters are counting on us to give them a world where they can make as much money as a man and get the same promotions as a man without having to compromise their dignity.
Getting off my soap box now. ;-)
Here are the answers to the quiz:
1. Who was the first woman presidential candidate?
**Victoria Chaflin Woodhull in 1872.
2. Who were the co-founders of the woman
Oh…and I believe Rae won!!
WOOHOO Rae!
Don’t forget that when the Men folk went off to fight in World War 2, the women were the ones that got jobs in factories making the weapons and other things needed for the war effort (I think airplane parts?) and some even joined the military. It was a woman that organized the American Red Cross.
I was going to say Clara Barton for #4, but never mind…

That’s so cool! I read a book about her when I was young, and have never forgotten her. What a brave, and inspiring woman! If you don’t mind my asking, what were your gr gr grandparents doing there? Did they say anything else about her?
It’s funny that you brought that up because I posted to you on another thread just before I came here (where you mentioned you like geneology), I don’t remember which one. (I’m feeling kind of old myself.)lol
Rae,
Congratulations, you feminist, you!
Liz,
That was Clara Barton who started the American Red Cross.
LizFromNebraska –
Excellent point!
