Ovulation caught on film
Can’t believe scientists had such a basic human function as ovulation wrong. Just goes to show science has a lot still to learn about a woman’s reproductive cycle. (And if they had this wrong, how much do they not yet know about the birth control pill’s mode(s) of action?)
From Sify News:
A researcher associated with the Catholic University of Louvain in Brussels has accidentally captured the images showing the production of an egg inside a woman’s body, something known as ‘ovulation’ in medical terminology.
Jacques Donnez has revealed that he captured the event while preparing to carry out a partial hysterectomy on a 45-year-old woman.
Observing ovulation in humans is extremely rare, and previous images have been fuzzy.
“The release of the oocyte from the ovary is a crucial event in human reproduction. These pictures are clearly important to better understand the mechanism,” New Scientist magazine quoted Donnez as saying.
Most scientists believe that the release of an egg occurs as a sudden, explosive event.
However, Donnez’s pictures show it taking place over a period of at least 15 minutes.
The researcher says that shortly before the egg is released, enzymes break down the tissue in the mature follicle, a fluid-filled sac on the surface of the ovary that contains the egg.
He says that this prompts the formation of a reddish protrusion, and after a while a hole appears, from which the egg emerges, surrounded by support cells.
Donnez says that it then enters a Fallopian tube, which carries it to the uterus….

(And if they had this wrong, how much do they not yet know about the birth control pill’s mode(s) of action?)
And not only that, but if they had that wrong, how can they know with absolute certainty that an unborn child feels no pain before 20 weeks?
Those are astonishing pictures, by the way. Every time I see them I am just in awe.
WOW! That is truly amazing!!!
I know that doesn’t really have much to do with the topic at hand, but if they’re wrong about one thing, they can surely be wrong at other things.
Ewwwww.
Why ewwwww, Erin? This is what a woman’s body does. It isn’t gross. And it can lead to the most wonderful of miracles – the conception of a baby.
oh, darn, I meant fetus…..
Bethany, I posted the link to these pics last week on one of Jill’s comment threads. My daughters were VERY intrigued by it. And not grossed out at all.
Absolutely amazing!!
Psalm 139:
“13 For you created my inmost being;
you knit me together in my mother’s womb.
14 I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well.
15 My frame was not hidden from you
when I was made in the secret place.
When I was woven together in the depths of the earth,
16 your eyes saw my unformed body.
All the days ordained for me
were written in your book
before one of them came to be.”
All praise and honor and glory to God forever and ever, amen.
This one Psalm alone is reason enough to ban all abortions. As I have expressed 1,000 times before, abortion is always wrong because it negates the intent of God’s will.
And as I expressed to SOMG when he so proudly announced that he named a drug and was published in the JBC, that 1,000 years from now, his works would be thrown on the trash heap of bad scientific conclusions.
Cool pictures.
Looks like a grease fitting or “zerk.”
Yay for new threads that actually let me post on my phone!
No wonder that makes me feel bad when that happens to me.
I’m usually not an “eew!” type of person, but this looks kinda weird and a little gross. I just think that the egg being fertilized and the baby actually starting to grow is the coolest though. I wish we could will ourselves not to ovulate.
“I wish we could will ourselves not to ovulate.”
Wouldn’t that be awesome? We wouldn’t be arguing over all this if we could just be like “nope, you stay in there little egg. We’ll chat about this again next month!”
It will be very interesting to see how the male birth control pill will be used and how it might shift the discussion. My bf is willing to try it, and I think its very intruiging.
I was eating my breakfast when I can across this. How nice.
“I wish we could will ourselves not to ovulate.”
I wouldn’t mind being able to will myself TO ovulate.
I could have told them that. Ovulations HURTS. Sometimes the left, sometimes the right, sometimes both, but the pain lasts for a few minutes, not a quick, singular event.
“I wish we could will ourselves not to ovulate.”
We can- via stress. But not ovulating is almost always a sign that something is wrong, and I like for my mysterious lady parts to wrong as designed.
wrong=work
“to work as designed” :)
Ryan: 1:13:I was eating my breakfast when I can across this. How nice.
This is so cool! A miracle of nature. Kind of like a butterfly emerging from its cocoon.

I know women who can feel when they are ovulating. But I’ve never been aware of it with myself. Some people must be more in tune with their bodies than others!
Amazing
Wow, that is SO cool!
And you’re right Jacqueline, it is painful!
That is really rather interesting….but unlike some, I have never been able to feel when I was ovulating.
Pretty cool, not gonna lie.
Either way, I still wish I could “turn off” or “turn on” ovulation at will. I know bears can…they can choose to conceive under the best possible conditions. I would happily “turn off” my ovulations for years. And I would also be happy to know that Bethany could turn hers on and have a whole houseful of babies. :)
Aww lyssie, that is sweet of you! :)
Mine isn’t painful…I know I’m ovulating when- well…let’s just say that time of the month makes my hubby happy. lol
Hey guys! I”m not fully back in business. I was gone for 3 weeks taking a “Spring Flora of the Ozarks” class in the wilderness, and then when I came back I found out that I owe my mother $600 in vet expenses, plus I haven’t found a second job, so I haven’t called the cable/internet guys to set it up in my new apartment. I’ll be back to comment regularly very soon.
I did want to tell you guys about this thing I saw this morning that blew my mind. When I wake up I need about 30 minutes to have coffee, eat, and get psyched to exercise/shower/get ready for the day. I was flipping through the TV channels and this talk show was on, and the title on the bottom said “I killed my baby!” I was like hmm…that’s interesting, so I kept watching. The woman in question said that she killed her 3-month old preborn by overdosing on crack. Keep in mind she killed her baby at 3 months gestation.
Righteously the host/audience was appalled, and he ripped into the father too for purposely urging her to get pregnant when she had a crack problem, and then he got in her face and called her a pig, and made her say over and over, “I killed my baby” and “I tortured by baby to death.” I was just like, wow, this is an interesting dialogue for daytime television.
AND THEN HE SAID,
“Why didn’t you just go get an abortion?”
As if ripping the baby apart would be acceptable while overdosing isn’t? SERIOUSLY?
If a baby at 3 months gestation doesn’t feel it, why the outrage? Why is she saying “I killed my baby” when she’s on crack but she wouldn’t be on that show if she “just got an abortion.”
After seeing 30 minutes of that I was just sitting there like, “what the f***.” Mind-blower.
Anyway, sorry for lack of warning about my leave, but I miss you all very much. I hope to get cable/internet within the next week or so.
LOVE.
This falls under the category “cool but gross” to me. Much like eyeballs.

Wow, PIP, you aren’t kidding. What messed up logic!!
PIP,
I have been thinking of you!!
I am speechless about the show. Really.
Pip, did the topic for this show happen to appear on Jerry Springer?
Because if it showed up on any show OTHER than Jerry Springer, I’d be shocked.
Welcome back, by the way!
Outstanding pics!
Hey guys! I”m not fully back in business. I was gone for 3 weeks taking a “Spring Flora of the Ozarks” class in the wilderness….
PIP great to “see” you. But come on, Girl, tell us about your boyfriend….
…..
When I wake up I need about 30 minutes to have coffee, eat, and get psyched to exercise/shower/get ready for the day
I’ve been up over 12 hours and I still ain’t ready for it.
…..
And tomorrow I gotta go to New Jersey….sheesh.
…..
As if ripping the baby apart would be acceptable while overdosing isn’t?
Daytime TV…what can I say? Yeah, that doesn’t make much sense.
…..
I’m reminded of what I used to think of per “Crack babies.”
First, can taking a lot of Crack really cause the baby to die?
It was either here on Jill’s blog or on some other message board, but I found out that even though a pregnant woman uses Crack, it won’t necessarily mess the baby up, or not so bad, as will fetal alcohol syndrome, for example.
PIP:
I’d be interested to hear about what the Ozarks are like.
Did you tent it or lodge it?
I’m going to Yellowstone in July after my son’s wedding in Salt Lake. We’ll be mostly lodging it.
I can’t waint to see the elk, moose, bear and buffalo in their natural setting.
I also understand that Yellowstone sits on the top of a dormant-for-now active volcano.
After Yellowstone, my 12 year old and I are going to hike Moab, then Mt. Zion and then finally the Grand Canyon.
@HisMan: Yep, Yellowstone is actually a giant volcanic caldera.
We will all be *very* screwed when that sucker erupts. It’ll put Mt. Krakatoa (sp?) and Mt. St. Helen’s to SHAME.
Elizabeth,
It was the show that came after Jerry springer, the Steve spin-off. This guy is hard core, he tackles crazy intense issues (tomorrow is supposed to be a father who tried to rape his child)and just yells at them and tells them “you are not sitting on my stage” so they are forced to stand and he kicks over their chair.
It’s like Dr. Phil on steroids.
Doug, my boy’s name is Aaron, he is a business major, he’s from Houston, he is moderate in political beliefs (he is pro-human rights, business-conservative, pro-life), he’s Catholic, we have very similar tastes in movies and music and TV but he has an obsession for sports I will never understand ;)
HisMan,
It was at the Biological Station owned by SLU, apparently donated by a Jesuit who owned that land. It has prarie and bluffs and woods and river-side habitats, but little mammal life. Most of the people studying there are studying birds, snakes, or amphibians. Got to hold some cool water snakes there! The school built a lodge, a classroom, and cabins with a separate bath/showerhouse/laundry room. It’s decent. But the cabins we stayed in were not very sturdy. I always woke up my roommate because I would go to sleep late and the floors were super loud. It was a lot of fun, but I’ll have to go on about it later, we are watching Weeds season 3 at my friends house!
Hey PIP, you seem pretty cool. Hope I get to know you a little better in the future. What part of the Ozarks? You can see Wolverton Mountain from my parents’ backyard.
Caught on tape: Ovaries tell all…
In a surprise appearance by one feisty egg during a routine hysterectomy, science once again has been proved terribly wrong. Recently Professor Jacques Donnez, MD, Head for the Department of Gynecology of the Catholic University of Louvain in Brussels,…
I just happened to turn the TV on and that show that PIP mentioned was on…The Steve Wilco Show. The boyfriend was in shock and this Steve guy was yelling at him that he wasn’t angry enough, just trying to play it up more. It was very sad. I don’t know if Steve realizes abortion is killing and torture as well. (Steve, the host, kept saying over and over that she tortured the baby.)
Fantastic fotos – glory to God! Undoubtedly there is more about our bodies that we don’t know than that which we do for the average human being.
Janet,
TOTALLY.
xalisae,
Definitely! I’ll be on only occasionally but soon I’ll be on on a daily basis.
I went to the Ozarks in southern missouri, near Steelville/Potosi Missouri.
Whoops that was me
I’m convinced Steve Wilco’s ratings are tied to the decibels of his tirades.
There’s not a single person that goes on that show that doesn’t get verbally harassed, even the supposedly “good” people.
I wouldn’t take it too seriously, honestly. It’s TV. And Wilco used to be a bouncer for Jerry Springer. Apparently he took over Springer’s job on a few shows and the station loved it and gave him his own show. There isn’t anyone on TV angrier than Wilco. Except maybe a few evangelicals, but I never sit around long enough to watch a whole show, so I could be wrong.
Edyt:9:11: I wouldn’t take it too seriously, honestly. It’s TV.
The part to take seriously would be the fact that Wilco asked his guest why she didn’t just have an abortion instead of killing her baby in utero by taking illegal drugs. Whether he was serious or not, it was a dumb thing to say to an audience that is probably not bright enough to think for themselves.
Janet,
He was probably under the impression that crack would “hurt” the baby more than an abortion, being that it’s extended abuse rather than brief. He might have also meant to say that she shouldn’t have even TRIED to carry a baby while being under the influence of drugs.
I don’t know.
I think he’s a maniac, personally.
Anyway, trying to get him to sound “smarter” for the sake of his audience is a lost cause, honestly. People listen to BS on TV all the time (Hello Infomercials!) and believe it. If they can’t think for themselves, it’s their loss. I really don’t care. As long as I’m surrounded by intelligent people at work and in my personal life, the idiots can have television. At least it’ll keep them off the streets…
Edyt,
Thanks for the info on the maniac. Not that I would watch his show but, now I can stay on my keyboard longer…ha.
Hey, did you start your new job yet??
Carla,
Yep, and it’s fantastic. Fast-paced, lots of work, a bit of creative writing, and the people are really cool. I’m on 5 accounts already and I’ve only been working since Monday, so that’s pretty good. Probably by next week I’ll have doubled that.
And the nice thing about working PR rather than journalism is that when I leave the office, I leave my work behind. No more late nights writing articles, no more ridiculous deadlines and people who just won’t call back in time, no more pressuring city officials to tell the truth for once in their lives….
And the Metra is understaffed, so for the past two days I’ve ridden for free since the conductors haven’t walked through my car! Yay!
Edyt,
My dad said the same thing about the Metra yesterday! He was like “I guess they just aren’t taking tickets anymore.” LOL!
Edyt,
So good to hear that about the job!! Glad you are enjoying the work and the Metra!
Elizabeth,
Yeah, it’s been weird. I think it must be understaffing. The guys seem really worn out by the end of the day.
I don’t mind it… naturally… but now I’m debating whether to buy a month pass, or if I’ll save money by just riding regular!! Such a dilemma. Normally I’d just buy a month pass and not worry about it (since it is technically theft of services), but some bad stuff’s going down in my boyfriend’s family and we might have his little bro coming to stay, so I want to be sure we can provide.
Yeah, I’m sorry to hear about your boyfriend’s family. I hope things get better soon for him. But I’m glad to hear you like your job. It’s always refreshing to start something new, and have it work out great!
PLEASE I WILL LIKE TO HAVE OVULATION CAUGHT FILM AND BILLINGS METHORD VIDOW FILM FOR GETTING PREGENACY.
