Bill Maher mocks the disabled
All will recall President Abortion mocking Special Olympians on the Jay Leno show as being at bad at bowling as he is.
Then came Sarah Palin, with a future Special Olympian of her own, criticizing Obama for being so calloused.
This is where Raving Theist picked up the story:

This observation was too much for talk show host Bill Maher, who led a panel consisting of Senator Bernie Sanders, actress Kerry Washington and New York Times reporter Andrew Ross Sorkin in a round of hooting, hand-clapping laughter at Palin’s presumed stupidity. Things got a bit uncomfortable, however, when Maher specifically challenged Palin’s description of the disabled:

It’s hard for me to be angry with Bill Maher, because I feel like the man holds enough anger for about ten people within his heart.
I just feel sorry for him. He is probably one of the most miserable men I’ve ever seen.
When the last chapter is written on the moral decadence that we call the main stream media, Bill Maher will be a long forgotten has-been. I agree with His Man: nothing surprises or shocks any more.
If there were justice, Bill Maher would be “promoted” to the position of White House correspondent while Sarah Palin is serving as president.
Liberals used to be called “bleeding heart” liberals. Now they are just out for blood. The more bloodshed, literally or figuratively, the better. The politics of hope and change? No. Quite the contrary. It’s the politics of destruction, no matter how low one must stoop.
Are disabled people really more unique and precious than the rest of us? I wouldn’t have attacked Palin for her statement, but she took a cheap shot at obama and she’ll get some cheap shots back. That’s politics.
Let’s end the feigned outrage.
Unfortunately coming from Bill Maher that is not a surprise. He mocked Christianity and I believe Catholics and Jews in a movie he recently did.
In our society now it is quite acceptable to mock Christian faith and things that are good. However one day these people will have to answer for it, unless they turn to God and repent.

My sister has this disorder and my father was a borderline PD, closely related to NPD, so I’d be very interested in your input.
So what would Bill Maher do if he were ever disabled from an accident? What if he finds himself paralized and in a wheelchair one day? I’ll bet he would STILL want to live. I guess he feels that it’s his God given right to decide who lives or dies. After all, it’s not HIS life.

Socipathy is a personality disorder. It manifests itself by certain traits. These are people with no conscience and empathy. They are manipulative and charming people, which is what makes you unsuspecting of them.
Their anti social behavior can be very subtle or very profound. They can be a spouse, co-worker, friend, child, next door neighbor.
Homosexuality is not in and of itself sociopathic. Gay and straight people can be sociopaths.

Speaking of Sarah Palin, I hope Bystander will let me know why he/she considers Palin a Narcissistic Personality Disorder.
Being I am related to a NPD, was the child of a Borderline PD, and the mother of a Borderline PD as well, he/she and I could have quite a fascinating discussion.
BTW Bystander, NPD is not a disablity. These are usually highly intelligent people who you encounter all the time and are totally unaware they are personality disordered. The NPD might initially strike you as extremely arrogant and belittling, but then again they may be real charmers.

Appearing on the Friday “Late Night with Conan O’Brien,” comedian Bill Maher took repeated swipes at the Republican Party and conservatives as idiotic, bigoted, homophobic, you know, all the usual epithets.
Although his material was registering mostly nervous laughter from the audience, Maher plunged further into his assault on traditional values, attacking Christians, particularly Catholics, by insisting that one has to be “schizophrenic” to go about life normally for six days a week only to, on the seventh go to church and believe that when drinking communion wine one is drinking “the blood of a 2,000-year old space god.”
I caught this line while watching live and didn’t have a tape handy to catch the comment on video, however an “NBC Video Rewind” of the program should be available at NBC.com later today.
asitis, here is why I don’t feel that the man is at peace. Why not just live and let live? Why does he care if people believe in God or not? Why is he always bringing it up?

Of course, that requires an analysis of her actual conduct, not of the saint the far right has constructed. These include using her family as campaign props, hauling Trig around like a sack of potatoes on the campaign trail instead of providing him the care and therapy he needs, throwing Bristol under the bus to thwart persistent rumors that Bristol is Trig’s mother,
using and then discarding people time after time in her political climb, her crazed vendetta against her ex brother in law which has cost the state of AK millions, using her office to personally financially benefit her and her family time and time again, appointing grossly unqualified cronies to political positions, pathological lying, abandoning the best interests of AK to cater to an extreme right wing religious national power base, etc.
Since you could never acknowledge, much less discuss, the real Sarah Palin, any analysis of her in terms of NPD is impossible.

Carla thinks she may have deleted it. You could ask her where it is, or any other mod who may have knowingly deleted it. I have no idea where deleted comments go.

Mocking Sarah Palin for saying what she said about children like her son is cruel. He spent the entire segment mocking Palin and her family, including pulling out a baby doll (whom he called “Baby Tripp”) at the end of the segment who was voiced to say rude things about Sarah Palin, including a profanity. Go to youtube and search for “Bill Maher sorkin washington” and you should find it. I just typed in the names of the guests.
He’s a real class act, that guy.
BTW, asitis, for future reference, that’s the easiest way to find a specific episode, typically. Type in the host’s name and the names of the guest panel.

I never saw that exchange until now. I did not see an actual admission on anyone’s part, however, as to their identities…only assumptions and not-so-nice behavior. Not very pretty.
If the poster in question was in fact posting under a different moniker, how is that anyone else’s business, so long as she was not using two different ones at the same time? It is not a moderator’s concern if someone (like you, asitis) should choose to stop posting under your former moniker and pick a new moniker under which to post. It is acceptable unless one has been banned.
If someone is posting under two different monikers at the same time, the moderators will know and will handle it. In the meantime, I feel that it would be advisable to stop treating new posters as if they were some other persona, instead of the moniker that they have chosen. This way, there is a lot less confusion.
We’re here to debate ideas, not to harass people personally.

By the way, it was clear to me that he was not only mocking Palin, but what she said as to HER VIEW of disabled individuals being the “most special” people. Why even bring something like that up? All it serves to do is mock Palin and cause others to laugh at those with special needs as if they are somehow not valuable people with feelings.
I have worked with a lot of special needs children, and I can tell you from experience that they ARE special and can help us to see the world in a whole different way. They can help us to be more grateful. They can help us to appreciate “little” things that we never would have thought to appreciate. In my opinion, that is pretty amazing.
The fact that Bill Maher even brought this up was telling. If you notice, his panel quickly skirted the issue and began to mock Sarah Palin to detract from what even *they* felt was a very uncomfortable subject.

Frankly, I don’t personally care if people want to leave and come back as new posters. People do that all over the web. It happens on many, many message boards. I think that it should be left up to Jill and the mods as to how those sorts of things are handled here. In the future, if you have an issue with a mod’s use of his/her own discretion, consider emailing that moderator rather than posting inflammatory comments on the threads. I’m sure it could be better handled that way. If it’s not handled the way you want…well, that’s the way it is when you’re not a moderator. :D You don’t get to handle it…they do. I’ve had disagreements with mods on other message boards before. Taking it public is not the best course of action. ;)

You are so right about special needs children. I love volunteering with special olympics. The dedication of the athletes, families, and volunteers is incredible. I’m a low level volunteer and I admire the work of the people who devote themselves to this year round.
A friend of mine is a devoted special ed. teacher. Her knowledge and dedication, not to mention her patience, is humbling.
As for Maher, the fact he dates mainly porn stars tells you what a real class act he is!

My very favorite is bowling. You could choreograph the “William Tell Overture” to the flurry of activity of volunteers directing from their podiums.

I’ve read some interesting theories on autism. One is the use of ultrasound throughout pregnancy. In my day, it was used strictly for diagnostic purposes only. I had only one in all three of my pregnancies. It would make sense, who knows what those bombarding sound waves may do to a developing nervous system.
x-rays used to be routinely performed on developing fetuses. It was only later discovered this led to an increase in childhood leukemia.
Another theory is Vit.D deficiency. We’re afraid of the sun and children do not get outside like they used to.
Just theories but very interesting.

I have heard of that. I think what is now recognized as autism was at one time just viewed as quirky behavior, geeks, or poor social skills and interaction and were ridiculed and shunned.
Its amazing just how highly intelligent autistics can be and sadly for so long these children and adults were put away in institutions, branded as “retarded”. This often happened to deaf children as well.
We’ve all heard of savants. This still can’t be explained.
Special ed. has come a long way and my friend has mentioned much of the success that has been attained in educating these children. She’s also called more than a few “experts” on their misdiagnoses of autistic children as retarded.
I give a lot of credence to the ultrasound theory. x-rays were at one time thought to be so harmless too. We have since learned to treat x-rays with the respect they deserve. Yes, childhood leukemia existed, but the problem worsened with the routine x-raying of the developing fetus, mostly done out of curiousity.

Mary, I know it is good that what used to be thought of as “retarded” is now being recognized as highly intelligent. It does seem to be more prevalent, beyond what could be accounted for by better diagnosis alone.

I have to agree there seems to be a higher incidence beyond just better diagnosis. That’s why I remain very suspicious of it being related to ultrasound. I’m not sold on it being vaccines. My friend is adamant in her belief it is not vaccines as well. I think people just have to research and draw their own conclusions.
I would suppose a higher incidence of childhood leukemia was attributed to better diagnosis and more children being born as well. Certainly doctors didn’t want to blame themselves or greatly modify the use of their latest medical toy.
Speaking of intelligence, for how many years were intelligent children with learning disablities ridiculed as “dunces” or “slow”? My brother was dyslexic and it was a nightmare for him.

Very sadly a friend of mine has a son disabled by very severe autism. Their daughter is normal. He is now in a group home and will never live independently, but seems content. I’m happy for her and her husband that they can now travel and enjoy their lives together. They certainly have paid their dues.

If you had a child with Down syndrome, you would know exactly what she means. These children melt your heart. I’ve seen many a reluctant parent (beforehand) become transformed by their presence in their lives. Believe me, you would understand where Sarah Palin is coming from, if you had this experience.
I know a man who is an older bachelor, no children, very quiet and reserved, and one you would never think he would like kids that much. He is absolutely charmed by his little niece w/DS. She has gotten through to his heart like nobody else.
Also, they are unique…how many of us have 47 chromosomes? And they are precious. They become even more unique and precious as fewer and fewer make it to their day of birth.
As a special education teacher, I share the love for those precious among us with Down Syndrome. I have a niece with it and several friends have children and feel very blessed, indeed.
I was 16 when I met a little boy with Down Syndrome and just knew I would do whatever it took to be with them. I have many fond memories of Special Olympics, group homes, summer camps, and classrooms where I met some amazing people with Down Syndrome.

My daughter is almost the same age as Trig, and what she still needs most is to be with Mommy. Even disabled children need time with Mommy a lot more than they need any therapy, and if Mommy (and/or Daddy) learn to provide the therapy themselves it will be more effective. The fact that Palin brings her baby everywhere speaks in her favor as a mother.

My nephew has autism, and now my brother-in-law and his wife have decided that my brother-in-law must have “Asperger’s Syndrome” (which is in the autism spectrum).
But they aren’t the same thing at all. Three-quarters or better of my high school and college friends and many of my (and my husband’s) immediate relatives could be diagnosed with Asperger’s (though this may be more a commentary on my social circles and taste in friends than on society). It’s not autism, it’s a trendy diagnosis.
That stuff about ultrasound scares me, Mary, because they had me in for so many with Hannah, due to incompetence, failures in logic, and inability to click buttons on medical software correctly. (They kept having me come back because they didn’t get a good enough view, and eventually I realized they weren’t going to see what they wanted to, because I wasn’t going to miraculously lose a layer of fat. And then they wanted more for sizing due to gestational diabetes, but misscheduled them, and didn’t believe me or check it out when I called them on it…. and it didn’t size her properly anyway.) Next time I’ll give them one for dating and one for checking her out, and that’s it.
