Planned Parenthood: Healthcare passage will “significantly increase access to reproductive health care”; exec order “a symbolic gesture”
Now it all comes out. It didn’t take long for Planned Parenthood CEO Cecile Richards to revel in PP’s financial gain from passage of healthcare in a Planned Parenthood statement just released. Note also Richards’ dismissal of Obama’s executive order….
For more than a year, PP has worked tirelessly for a health care reform bill that would fix our broken health care system, strengthen women’s health, and achieve quality, affordable health care for all Americans.
Today, monumental progress was made toward achieving these goals with the passage of historic health care reform legislation by the U.S. House of Representatives, despite a symbolic gesture, in the form of an Executive Order, to anti-choice Congressman Bart Stupak (D-MI), which has diverted attention from the central goal of health care reform – controlling costs and extending coverage.
As a trusted health care provider to millions of women and families across the country, Planned Parenthood applauds the fact that this legislation would extend health care coverage, including family planning, to tens of millions of women and families, guarantee access to affordable life-saving screenings for cervical and breast cancer and other serious health problems, protect women against gender discrimination by private insurers, end the practice of dropping coverage because of pre-existing conditions, and significantly increase access to reproductive health care.
The proposal also includes a commonsense provision to expand family planning under Medicaid, which would significantly increase access to essential preventive health care for millions of women….
Nonetheless, we regret that a pro-choice president of a pro-choice nation was forced to sign an Executive Order that further codifies the proposed anti-choice language in the health care reform bill, originally proposed by Senator Ben Nelson of Nebraska.
What the president’s executive order did not do is include the complete and total ban on private health insurance coverage for abortion that Congressman Bart Stupak (D-MI) had insisted upon. So while we regret that this proposed Executive Order has given the imprimatur of the president to Senator Nelson’s language, it is critically important to note that it does not include the Stupak abortion ban.

Maybe instead of blaming Stupak, we should blame Republicans for not having more of themselves in the House. Stupak would have remained obscure had that been the case. He’s a DEMOCRAT. He put up some kind of a fight, at least. All Democrats claim to personally be “pro-life” but they’re pro-choice on policy. At least he tried.

Phil, just so you know, whenever they talk about Gehenna/the Valley of Hinnom in the Bible they ARE referring to abortion. Gehenna was a valley just outside the gates of Jerusalem, where there was a shrine to Molech/Baal. At that shrine they sacrificed the born and unborn on an altar, cutting them up and passing them through fire. In the case of the unborn, they would rip open the mothers and to take the child out.
After the sacrifice, they would throw the bodies in a trash heap outside, where the burnt bodies would rot. The place smelled of burning sulfur. That’s how Gehenna became known as another word for Hell in the Jewish language. It was full of the most awful abominations, and was everything the Lord ordered the Jewish people to not take part in. It was the most sinful place, the complete absence of God.
Also, just because someone doesn’t match up to Christian ideals doesn’t mean that they can’t be pro-life. In fact, there are a few pro-lifers on this site that are not Christian. The pro-life community is made up of many people from many different other communities. Being pro-life isn’t just a Christian thing. I’m guessing you’ve never heard of the Atheist and Agnostic Pro-Life League, SecularProlife.org, the Pro-Life Alliance of Gays and Lesbians, the Jewish Pro-Life Foundation, or Pagans for Life. I don’t think that dividing the pro-life movement by religion is going to get us anywhere. I may be Catholic, but I see life as civil right rather than a religious issue. You may argue all you want, but at the end of the day, does it really matter who it is who saves the life of a child who is being led to the slaughter? I would think that just the fact that the child’s life has been saved would be the thing that’s important.

An excellent post,I couldn’t agree more. While I like Sarah Palin, McCain the “moderate” who was everybody’s friend was a joke. Maybe that will be a lesson to those who say Republicans need more moderates! Like it or not,Republicans indeed abandoned their conservative principles and they, and our country, paid a price.
I like seeing Republicans in my state say they are running as conservatives! They’ve finally grown some onions.
Also, the PL movement is made up of people of all stripes and I’m distressed as well Nerina that we are being reduced to gay bashing. I may not share Phil’s religious convictions but it is no excuse for vicious attacks on him or his beliefs by me or anyone else. We are not all going to agree all the time. That’s what makes this site interesting. A mutual admiration board would be a colossal bore.

Lesson for me: Never vote for a Democrat. Ever.
There are two main reasons that a pro-lifer should never vote for a Democrat:
1) Pro-life Democrats are not especially trustworthy. They are Democrats first, and pro-lifers second … if at all.
2) Even the most pro-life Democrat is still a vote for Nancy Pelosi to remain Speaker of the House and/or Harry Reid to remain as Senate Majority Leader. By voting for a Democrat, pro-lifers are actually supporting a Democratic leadership which has proven itself to be virulently anti-life.
Conclusion: Until the Democratic Party drops its anti-life agenda, no pro-lifer should ever vote for a Democrat.

Nate didn’t choose to be gay. It’s not like he woke up one morning and said, “Hey, I’m going to decide to be attracted to men!” I didn’t choose to be bisexual either – and before you assume I go around promiscuously sleeping with everyone, I’ve never had a relationship with a woman and I’ve been with the same man for over seven years. (I’m female.) I’m still bisexual because I still have an attraction to women.
Even if you think homosexuality is a sin, do you really think the pro-life movement can afford to alienate people? Being rude to gay pro-lifers might not make them become pro-choice, but it might make them think, “Yeah, like I’d ever want to work with YOU on anything.”
Having said that, Nate, I really like Sarah Palin. She’s been charicatured (sp) by the media because they’re threatened by the fact that she doesn’t care what they think about her, but the woman herself, separated from the mockery by her detractors, is smart, tough, and the only living politician I’ve ever gotten excited about (as opposed to thinking, “Okay, this one is the better one, I guess.”) Saying your fellow pro-lifers are pathetic isn’t helpful. It doesn’t advance anything and it just leads to a bunch of pointless infighting.
I get a kick out of Cecile Richards saying Obama was “forced” to sign the executive order. Kind of insulting, don’t you think? Poor wittle ‘Bama couldn’t stand up for himself, he got forced to sign the big bad order by meanie Stupak. Give me a break.

I have a nephew I suspect is gay. There is not a more devoted son, brother, uncle, nephew or grandson who walks this planet.
He works hard, owns a home, pays his taxes, and lives a law abiding life.
He can find time for his widowed grandmother, be a devoted son and good friend to his divorced father, who has been rejected by his two daughters, and can find the time to visit his broken down old aunt (me) when she arrives in town.
Phil may regard him as an abomination, I regard him as one of the finest young men to walk this planet.
First…I agree with Nate. McCain was an absolute joke. He really was…there was so much he could have called Obama out on the carpet for but he ran a wussy campaign.
That being said…Phil don’t let people discourage you. The Bible is clear that homosexuality is a sin. If God “made” someone that way wouldn’t it be very cruel for God to then turn around and say the way He made them is a sin? Think about it! Thats one cruel God who MAKES someone homosexual and then says homosexuality is an ABOMINATION to Him.
Interesting thing too from history…in ancient cultures homosexual practices went hand in hand with child sacrifice. Sin is sin. God forgives those who repent. Those who hold on to their sin will not be forgiven. We are ALL sinners and guilty. God can forgive ANY of us. I know because God has forgiven me! I didn’t deserve it, but He forgave me anyhow!

I’m not trying to discourage Phil. As I have pointed out I support and respect his right to his beliefs, as I do yours.
I do not support personal attacks on other PL people on this board. I think this only promotes the stereotype of PL people as bigoted, narrow minded religious fanatics. Our opponents enjoy nothing more than to read this.
I find these attacks on gay PL people as offensive as I would racial, ethnic, and religious slurs. We don’t have to love and agree with each other, but we don’t have to attack each other either. I can find someone’s religious beliefs absurd, but I can still respect that person’s right to exercise them and simply hold my tongue.
The sinfulness of homosexuality is off-topic and a distraction from the cause of Life. Of all time in our nation’s history, now is not the time for pro-lifers to get distracted. Save lives first!

Me and Nate have two great things in common: we’re both Pro-Life, and we’re both sinners. And I agree, the Republican party could have done better than McCain last election. Not that I don’t like McCain, it’s just that when you’re electing the leader of the free world, I think we could have done better.
As far as Nate’s personal life, that can be a topic of discussion for another venue, another board.
We all have sins we deal with.
We all need God’s Mercy and Grace.

I didn’t vote for McCain in the primaries..I voted for Mike Huckabee. When it came time for the Election, I didn’t have much choice. A vote for McCain was one LESS for Obama. To not vote at all would be one MORE for Obama. Unfortunately, McCain was just “the lesser of the two evils”.

All of Cecile Richards’ talk about how now more women will be able to have cancer screenings is just to distract from the main issues. The majority of Americans didn’t want this bill passed and it’s unethical to force people to pay for something they consider immoral. It’s kind of like “Mussolini made the trains run on time.” Yes, isn’t it nice that the trains run on time…but he’s still Mussolini, for God’s sake.

I just watched “The Passion of the Christ”…and you got it! NONE of us qualifies for sainthood. We are all wretched, vile, sinners. I am just so overcome with the love our Lord has for each one of us and the forgiveness He offers us.
