Our surprising journalistic power
I mentioned this verse a couple weeks ago in the Sunday quote, but in case you missed it:
and my fingers to do battle. ~Psalm 144:1
I love that Scripture, 1st because it demonstrates the timelessness of the Bible. David was thinking of physical hand-to-hand combat when he wrote that verse, at a time when, of course, there was no concept of typing and the Internet and blogging. Yet it applies to what we online pro-life fighters do today.
The verse is also a reminder that we’re gifted and impassioned by God to do what we do. And it is also a comfort that we will be the ultimate victors.
But on a day-to-day basis I sometimes don’t feel like a victor. The pro-life battle appears so uphill, with money, political power, and MSM all against us….
So the following July 21 Politico story on what bloggers on the Left think of us was enlightening. Every time I get a peek into the other side’s view of us I realize again that they’re paper tigers.
The piece’s impetus is the Shirley Sherrod debacle. Abortion isn’t mentioned, but it is an important component of the online battle between Right and Left.
Also interesting in this piece is the Left’s view that Obama has clipped his agenda thanks to us, when we think his actions thus far demonstrate he is the most liberally radical president ever….
But this week’s forced resignation of a previously obscure Agriculture Dept. employee is just the latest example of Obama officials reacting to a cable news-driven obsession of the right.
It not only infuriates Obama’s liberal base, which feels like the episodes just reinforce the power of the right to push a damaging story into the mainstream press….
But as this week shows, the White House’s touchiness even threatens Obama’s ability to keep control of his own public persona, or steer the national conversation in a way that’s conducive to promoting his message and his agenda….
On Wednesday, liberals… lamented how the same president who broke so many conventional rules as a candidate was now bowing to the same forces on the right that have tormented Democrats for years.
“Now that the full video is out there, and Sherrod’s version of events is vindicated, Obama looks foolish, impulsive and reactive,” said Jane Hamsher, a prominent liberal blogger and frequent Obama critic….
“They desperately want to be liked by the right, and this pathological need to ingratiate themselves with people who want to destroy them lead them to make stupid move after stupid move,” complained Markos Moulitsas, who runs the influential Daily Kos blog….
What especially irritates progressives, though, is… the sustained ability of right-wing media forces to frame the political debate.
For a decade, conservative activists have haunted Democrats. It was what they blamed for the caricature of Al Gore in 2000 and the “swift-boating” of John Kerry in 2004. In 2008, Hillary Clinton and her campaign warned that Obama couldn’t handle the same attacks that had sunk the last 3 Democratic presidential hopefuls. He proved the doubters wrong, of course, and his team was adroit in fending off the cultural and racially tinged attacks launched by the right during the general election.
But the same conservative forces have, if anything, strengthened with Obama in the WH and Democrats in control of Congress – forcing progressives once again on the defensive.
“The right’s messaging apparatus – talk radio, Fox, Drudge – is remarkably sturdy in the digital age and Democratic leaders and strategists are still at a loss about how to deal with it,” lamented Peter Daou, an online strategist and former Hillary Clinton adviser. “The belief in 2008 was that the Obama online machine would trump it, but as I argued during the health care debate, ‘The health reform showdown is powerful evidence that the much-touted online advantage of the left, if not a chimera, is certainly questionable when it comes to major political confrontations.‘ ”
“In that context, the Sherrod fiasco is just another in a long series of examples of Democrats being confounded and intimidated by the right’s ruthless attack machine,” he said….
More broadly, though, the WH believes there is another culpable party that is enabling the right – the mainstream media.
By picking up charges that emanate from Breibart or Fox, Obama officials say, traditional reporters force their hand. Once stories cross over… the pressure intensifies to respond.
As for the specific case of Sherrod, the WH is angry that reporters dare question the hasty termination when their own publications aired the partial clip that sparked the story….
But, as is often the case with political stories, the Sherrod case isn’t just about the Sherrod case. The irritation on the left after this episode is serving as a proxy for more fundamental gripes from Obama’s base about the man once viewed as the closest thing to a true progressive elected president in modern history.
“It’s always been a bit of a conundrum reconciling Obama the campaigner and Obama the president,” said liberal blogger John Aravosis. “The former was a maverick, the latter tries far too hard not to rock the boat.”
“The administration has enabled the Republicans, and all their political opponents, including conservative Democrats. far too often. They didn’t pass a big enough stimulus because the Republicans objected. They didn’t push for the public option because the Republicans, and conservative Democrats, objected. They didn’t go for a full repeal of ‘don’t ask, don’t tell’ because Republican appointee Secretary [Robert] Gates objected.”
Added Aravosis: “… But far too often, President Obama seems to cut his losses, on personnel and policy, whenever the Republicans say ‘boo.’ I have no idea why he doesn’t show more backbone, but a lot of Obama supporters, myself included, wish he would.”

He’s got the senate, congress, the media, the presidency everything you need to rule the world right? Sorry we follow God’s teachings, we are the little David slaying goliath.
This is what I’ve been saying. The left, where I call home, is not happy with Obama caving so often to the radical right. Your attacks on Obama seem silly and misguided, you should be pretty happy with his moderate acts. Partly the fault of those on both sides who thought Obama would be “the most progressive president ever.” He never said he would be, and I never thought he would be. But, he can’t shake that view.
“the WH believes there is another culpable party that is enabling the right – the mainstream media”
————————————
Dang, I thought the MSM was liberal and in the hands of the White House folks…apparently, the MSM is now the FOX network.
Does that mean CNN, ABC, CBS and NBC are no longer believable news networks that’s why people are tuning in more to FOX??
And Hal, (“The left, where I call home, is not happy with Obama caving so often to the radical right”)…I seem to remember you were showering the “annointed one” with praises and were very impressed with what he’s done so far, despite the radical right’s activities a few weeks back…did he lose his spine in a matter of a couple of weeks?
“Partly the fault of those on both sides who thought Obama would be “the most progressive president ever.”
Hal,
He IS the most progressive president ever.
I don’t see him as “caving”. His approach is calculated. Wait and see what happens in the next four years if conservatives can’t get the job done in November.
When I heard her tell us that the WH is afraid of Fox News and the TEA Party….I laughed. Yes be afraid be very afraid…because we have your number.
Maybe there’s another reason the feds pressured Ms Sherrod to resign and she acquiesced so quickly. Time will tell if there’s more to the Sherrod-Vilsack dimension of this saga than meets the eye.
But on a day-to-day basis I sometimes don’t feel like a victor. The pro-life battle appears so uphill, with money, political power, and MSM all against us….
Once again, Jill, I don’t like to inject my religious beliefs into the abortion controversy, but remember that we’re not called upon to be successful, just faithful . . .
I’M PROUD OF YOU LABOR!. Keep standing up. The lives and health of all the American people and the World are in serious jeopardy.
Further, unemployment healthcare benefits are critically needed. But they should be provided through the Medicare program at cost, less the 65% government premium subsidy provided now to private for profit health insurance.
Congress should stop wasting hundreds of millions of dollars of taxpayer money on private for profit health insurance subsidies. Subsidies that cost the taxpayer 10x as much or more than Medicare does. Private for profit health insurance plans cost more. But provide dangerous and poorer quality patient care.
It’s over. Tell congress to get the healthcare Merchants of death and injury out of the American peoples lives for good. 2010 is about THE PUBLIC OPTION!
And that CORRUPT! UNDEMOCRATIC! filibuster must GO! NOW!

I want to commend all of you for working so hard and being so strong at helping the whitehouse and congress begin to address our U.S. and Global healthcare crisis. You have been AWESOME! my fellow Americans and peoples of the World. America and the World is better and safer for it. My greatest pride is the knowledge that I am one of you. And that you really get it. You really understand the importance of it all.
There are some potentially very good things in the healthcare legislation. Especially with the reconciliation fix’s. The Democrats, Bernie Sanders and the Whitehouse did a GREAT! job of fighting to produce the best healthcare legislation that they could. They have earned all our strong support. And we should give it to them.
But it was your relentless pressure and hard work that made the difference. Whatever good comes from this healthcare legislation, America and the peoples of the World will have each of you to thank. You were smart, creative, courageous and relentless. You fought together for the best legislation possible. And when you had to, you fought alone. No matter who stumbled and fell you continued to push and forge ahead. Fighting for the lives and health of the American people and the World. YOU SHOULD BE PROUD OF YOUR-SELVES :-)
It may come to pass that future generations will look back on us and say that we were ALL Americas Greatest Generations. And that healthcare reform was our finest hour. You should be proud of our leaders President Obama, Speaker Pelosi, Majority Leader Reid and the many other Democratic and independent fighters for the people in congress. They proved them-self worthy of the leadership of a GREAT! PEOPLE.
But we are not done yet. This was just the beginning of healthcare reform, not the end. WE THE PEOPLE OF THE UNITED STATES, ARE NOT! divided on healthcare legislation. The vast majority of you have been consistently crystal clear that this legislation does not go far enough. You want a strong Government-run Public Option CHOICE!! available to everyone on day one. And you want it NOW!
YOU MUST NOT ALLOW AN INDIVIDUAL MANDATE TO STAND WITHOUT A STRONG GOVERNMENT-RUN PUBLIC OPTION CHOICE! AVAILABLE TO EVERYONE.
WE THE PEOPLE have been crystal clear that we want an end to dependence on for-profit healthcare and the for-profit proxies called private for non-profit healthcare. The American people want the CHOICE! of a strong Government-run Public Option to replace their need or dependence on healthcare providers whose primary motivation is profit. Rather than providing the highest quality, easiest accessible and most affordable medically necessary healthcare possible. This is what the rest of the developed World has. And the American people want it too. They want healthcare ASSURANCE! Not, for-profit health insurance. And they want it NOW!
Now is the time to continue the push for a strong Government-run Public Option CHOICE! available to everyone that wants it on day one. Rationally it’s clear what we have to do to get this done. SUPPORT THE DEMOCRATS that supported you with a Public Option choice, and REMOVE as many republicans as you can. Not one republican in congress was willing to step across the isle to support a strong Government-run Public Option CHOICE!! available to everyone on day one. NOT ONE! Let no candidate prevail this November that does not support a Strong Government-run Public Option.
47,000 AMERICANS die each year from lack of healthcare. 120,000 die from treatable illness that don’t die in other developed countries. Hundreds of thousands of you are dieing from medical accidents in a rush to profit. And Millions of you are injured. Millions more are driven into bankruptcy. All for the privilege of paying two to three times as much as any other people in the developed world for healthcare. HOGWASH!
Additionally, tens of thousands of you and your children were killed and millions sickened and injured from a terror attack with H1N1 (swine flu). Released on the American people and the World by the for-profit healthcare industry. All in an attempt to panic and frighten you into accepting the oxymoronic criminal enterprise of private for-profit healthcare (The most costly, deadly, dangerous, and disgraceful product sold in America). H1N1 is still sickening people and killing them. Especially children, the young and the middle aged. And there will be a third wave. These are the terrorist you need to worry about the most. Even the so-called international terrorist would not do something so INSANE! But greed driven medical profiteers would and did.
Apparently as far as republicans in GOVERNMENT are concerned, YOU! my fellow Americans – CAN JUST DROP DEAD! Including their own family members. Fools!… Hundreds of thousands of you, and possibly millions of you will die from the long-term effects of your infection and poisoning with H1N1.
So my fellow Human Beings. Rest-up, Take good care of the basics (Balanced nutrition, hydration, exercise, rest and POSITIVE emotional supports). Then wade back into the FIGHT! for a strong Government-run Public Option CHOICE! available to everyone on day one. Drug re-importation, Abolishment or strong restrictions on patents for biologic and prescription drugs. And government controlled and negotiated drug and medical cost. You must take back control of your healthcare system from the Medical Industrial Complex. You MUST do it NOW! This is a matter of National and Global security. There can be NO MORE EXCUSES.
God Bless You My Fellow Human Beings. I’m glad to know of you. And proud to be one of you.
See you on the battle field.
Sincerely
jacksmith – WorkingClass :-)
RSD, I’m still generally happy with President Obama’s performance. Generally. I’ll certainly vote for him again (“Let’s keep the change”)
Hal, if this nation is so stupid as to re-elect this incompetent, all that will be left to keep will be change. Spare change… the kind left in your sofa. Until the new federal czar of sofa cushions comes to take it away from you.
(And for the humor impaired, the above is an example of snark designed to make a point by use of a reductio ad absurdum statement, not an indication that I actually believe there will be a federal czar of sofa cushions…. on the other hand, the WH personal chef is now a czar, so I suppose anything is possible….)
Fed Up,
Interesting.
I had no idea that the Dept. of Agricuture was handing out so much money to low-income people in terms of subsidies. There’s another part of the tape (the NAACP posted all 40+ minutes of it on their web site) where Sherrod talks about Obama having trouble getting support because he is black. (I haven’t found it yet – the tape is so darn long.) There’s not much mention of that in the MSM – only from a few conservatives.
The right is much stronger as the victim party – the minority. When they become the majority party, they become massively ineffective and drop most of their values. The pro-life numbers would be nowhere near what they are now if McCain had won.
Obama progressive?
What an oxymoron.
If anything we are digressing as a nation with his radical abortion and homosexual agenda.
Can’t wait until he fades into the sunset.
McCain is a RINO. I agree, I think there are some positives to Obama having been elected. For example, Teddy Roosevelt was a soft socialist…. FDR a hard line socialist. McCain is a Teddy Roosevelt…. Obama a FDR. I think the nation very much would have stayed a’slumber had McCain won and like the proverbial frog, boiled to death before we realized the water was hot.
However, with Obama elected, the narcissistic idealogue that he is, the progressive agenda turned up the heat so fast that the American frog realized the danger and JUMPED! My only fear is that the wake-up call may have come too late.
Elisabeth,
Hal’s kool-aid effect has not yet worn off…even though Nobama’s approval rating is now the lowest (and still going down) since 1973…he’ll be the only one left on this “Titanic”.
Hey Hal…hope you have your life preserver on by November.
Phil, even if you get rid of President Obama, the homosexuals you so fear are not going away. Five years of legal gay marriage in Canada, and no smiting yet by your God. What did Mr. Zimmerman say? The times they are a changing. Your old road is rapidly aging. please get out of the new one if you can’t lend a hand.
“Your old road is rapidly aging. please get out of the new one if you can’t lend a hand”…
Funny you mentioned this…I would rather stay on the “old road” strewn with rocks and thorns than progress on this concrete superhighway to hell….
