Lunch Break: Selena Gomez featured on Cosmo

I was shocked this month when the March issue of Cosmopolitan featured ex-Disney star Selena Gomez on its cover page. I wasn’t able to mentally reconcile a wholesome and bright teen like Selena helping to boost sales for a smutty, sex-infused publication.
Have you ever read their graphic sex articles absolutely not appropriate for pre-teens and teens? :-O
Hopefully Selena will use better discernment in the future as to how she markets herself. Also, is she starting to lose discernment with respect to her elegant attire choices (see link above)? Or should we turn a blind eye and mind our own business because of what we did when we were teens?

I always wonder where these kids’ parents are. Why would you let your underage kid do that???

Well..I never really liked that Selena Gomez was ON a show about WIZARDS in the first place. As with HARRY POTTER…that’s marketing WITCHCRAFT to children.
Make it seem cute and innocent and parents will “buy” that it IS.
Well it’s not. Satan is crafty…make parents think something is ok…and he’s got the children.
Oh..I know…I’m just one of those “Right-wing, religious nut jobs”.

I think Selena is 18 now, actually. Hopefully it was just a lapse in judgement.
I have to cringe at the number of women I know who consider Cosmo their guide to dating. Been there, done that–using sex to get/keep a man shows a lack of self-respect.

Other than that, she comes across as a sweet girl. I’ve never heard of her being involved in any “scandalous” behavior.

Disney destroys little girls. It is what they do. The Disney channel is banned in our home.

As far as I can tell, the Disney Channel of today teaches girls two things–to be shallow and materialistic. The plots are contrived and weak and feel like they’ve been written by 12 year olds. The characters are mostly two-dimensional stereotypes and for the most part they seem to inhabit a world that is free of parents. You can literally feel your brain leaking out of your ears when watching. Seriously, even Full House and Saved by the Bell was better than the Disney schlock. I can’t believe I’m saying that, but it’s true.
What I’d like to know is, whatever happened to family television? You know–TV that kids could enjoy and that didn’t bore adults to tears? There was a lot of it when I was growing up in the 70s/80s–now, sadly, it seems to have disappeared. Is it because families don’t gather around one set anymore?

I don’t pay much attention to celebrities, but I do like Hillary Duff. She’s never been involved in any scandal and has kept her wholesome image. I remember watching ”Lizzie McGuire” with my daughter. She’s pregnant with her first child, and here’s the strange part — she’s actually married!

I completely agree, James and Jennifer! I never understand why people are surprised over and over again when Disney tween stars suddenly morph into sex objects. Disney sells what I can only really describe as asexual objectification to little girls, and parents seem to think it’s benign because it’s not sex…? It grooms girls to be both consumers and products; once sex is on the table, in late adolescence, sexiness is just one more thing to buy and one more way to sell yourself. Self-objectification does not begin at 18; the groundwork for it is laid in adolescence and preadolescence, and Disney is definitely one of the companies paving that road.

The Canadian imports on the Disney Channel are pretty good. Life with Derek and Naturally Sadie showed empowered young girls in relatable situations. Of course, Road to Avonlea was great.

Which “Canadian Disney Channel” are you talking about?
Family, which has many Disney programs, but some non-Disney?
Disney Junior, for younger kids?
Disney XD, a promotional channel?
Please let me know. i’m a little confused regarding what exactly you mean.

I’m not familiar with the other shows that Nicole mentioned, but The Road to Avonlea was produced by Disney in partnership with CBC, with additional funding from Telefilm Canada. I think that’s what she means by Canadian imports–not a specific Canadian Disney Channel.

Wizards of Waverly Place wasn’t that bad (and I didn’t see it as witchcraft…they had dragons disguised as dogs and only ONE member could keep their magic after a competition and the spells were just silly……(like Cashmeires appearas)…it was in itself a parody of Harry Potter…like WizTech’s uniforms and the professor crumbs guy being English. BTW, Selena is almost 20 I believe.
And If the issue you are talking about is what I saw on Jan 31st at a Walmart….yes, it was very shockiing to see her dressed immodestly…..

Cosmo is the most popular magazine among teens in public libraries. We usually have few back issues because they are so frequently read.
That gives you an idea of just how entrenched this kind of trash is in our culture. :(
