Stanek Sunday funnies: “Contraception Deception” edition
As I wrote last week, liberals are adept at turning controversies they provoke into the fault of conservatives, most recently President Barack Obama’s contraceptive mandate. Some of their political cartoonists were particularly crude this week, beginning with Jeff Danziger at GoComics.com…
by Ted Rall at GoComics.com…
by Dan Wasserman at GoComics.com…
by Mike Luckovich at GoComics.com…
Disappointingly, even some of our friendlies have been misappropriating blame, for instance Bob Gorrell at Townhall.com…
… which is not to say social issues aren’t vital components of the national discussion of who will be our next president. It’s just to say MSM is giving Obama a pass on the fact he is pushing a radical social agenda, in this case at the expense of religious freedom.

It’s amazing how obtuse these hacks are.
Comparing the candidates with the Roman soldiers gambling over Christ’s clothes is just stupid. It’s the other party that’s preoccupied while death is going on around them.
And who says the 50 million aborted would all be unemployed? Do they really think they’d have to take a number for Big Brother to hand them a job? There’s no greater resource for an economy than people.
And it’s not pro-lifers who forget what happens the nine months after conception.
I rest my case. Obama and the Democrats accomplished exactly what they set out to do.
The more this issue is dwelled upon, the better for Obama.
I’ve told you how this man’s mind works, and we and the Republicans are all playing right into his hands.
How could Roe v. Wade have caused all those women who wanted to have babies to turn into women who If Roe v. Wade had never been, what number out of that 50 million would have been carried to term?
I can’t think it’s the whole number or even half of it but it does seem reasonable that SOME would have automatically accepted the pregnancy and carried to term.
However, the truth is that many of that 50 million were doomed at the time of conception and would have been aborted regardless of the law.
If there’s no demand, supply is irrelevant. And something can be legal but uncommon. As I’ve pointed out before, it’s perfectly legal for me to walk about with a weight in my hand but it’s hardly something common. If the vast majority of women who get pregnant are those who want to have babies, the abortionists aren’t making money whether the practice is legal or illegal.
“Doomed at the time of conception” doesn’t mean this should simply be accepted. Those conceptions should never have occurred!
See you in November.
what a load of angering b.s.
Hey, Mr. Cartoonist: have you ever been unemployed? Yeah? Did things get better? Do you think you’d be able to abort yourself so that you can give us a comparison for what’s worse, and which is easiest to overcome?
Mary:
Umm…we could just argue the issue based on the fact that the government shouldn’t be mandating that churches pay for things that go against their religion, and have some representatives from the Pro-Life movement who actually support contraceptives come out and speak on our behalf, instead of having the vast majority of us start barfing split pea soup and having their heads turn around at the mere mention of contraceptives.
But no…that might actually accomplish something positive for us, and we’d rather just argue amongst ourselves about contraception and self-destruct while they successfully spread their message that we oppose contraceptives and want to outlaw them.
Hi Xalisae,
I’m only pointing out the obvious. Obama accomplished what he set out to do, with the help of a lapdog media. Ya gotta give the devil his due, and he pulled a smart move here. He certainly doesn’t want the spotlight on his colossol failures, and that isn’t what is being focused on.
By giving this issue any credence, even an argument, the Republicans and the rest of us play into his hands. We stand in one place chasing our tails arguing amongst ourselves and being on the defensive, while Obama forges ahead.
By fighting this as an issue of relgious freedom, the issue stays alive.
Like I said, ya gotta give the devil his due.
But it IS an issue of religious freedom, and if someone came out to 1.) clarify for us that this IS NOT about making contraception illegal, and 2.) point out exactly what Obama is doing with this mandate (trying to take the heat off of himself), the air would be cleared pretty quickly. Ignoring where we are getting our @$$e$ kicked is not going to make it go away.
Hi Xalisae,
I agree, it is an issue of religious freedom. We also have a petty dictator for a president with a lapdog media at his disposal that uses the Constitution to wipe his rear end with. He has set out to distract attention from his failures by creating a non issue, contraception. We can see how the issue of religious freedom has been turned into one of contraception with the help of a lapdog media that get’s its barking orders from the WH.
He has the Republicans on the defensive. BIG mistake. Exactly what Obama wants.
We fight this mandate, and well we should, and this is exploited as our supposed efforts to deny contraception. The issue stays alive.
I don’t agree for one minute the air would be cleared. Too many people have too much at stake to not to keep this non issue alive.
If we went on the offensive instead of the defensive every. freaking. time., it would be cleared.
Mary/Xalisae – quick question…working on this in my head, and not sure if it works…
Would you agree that anybody who believes that there should be a separation between church and state in the issue of contraception (that a religious person should not have to provide funding), do you think that belief and position needs to be the same in regards to school vouchers – that taxpayer money shouldn’t go to vouchers because they could be used to go to an institution that goes against beliefs?
@Ex-GOP: Why not? I would have no immediate objections to such a plan. Granted, I have no immediate reason to support any such plan, either. But if you want to float it to your congressperson, you go right ahead.
X-GOP, how so when the public school is already indoctrinating kids with things that go against my beliefs? Tax payers are already forced to send kids to schools that directly teach things contrary to religious beliefs. That is why my husband and I looked into financial aid for Christian education where we know our son won’t be indoctrinated with hedonism. We should be able to keep our tax money (or grandparents ought to be able to donate their tax money) to the education of my child wherever we so choose to send him.
EGV,
Your taxpayer money is going to any number of schools you may find objectionable for any number of reasons. The money spent educating the student would be spent by the parent as they see fit. It can be on another public school, a private school, or a parochial one.
Nothing says I would personally approve of the school, whatever the choice. But my tax dollars are going for the student’s education, no matter what.
They can fool some of the people some of the time, “They want to stop you from having sex!”
But they can’t fool all of the people all of the time. There’s $5 a gallon gas headed this way. The campaign commercials of green energy busts and oil stoppages have written themselves, all in Obama’s own words and misdeeds.
EGV:
The unasked question is – Why is the government trying to induce women to avoid pregnancy? Why is it so important to the Obama administration that women get no-cost hormonal contraception?
This administration is the most anti-child government in the history of the United States.
When the US Supreme Court said that people had a right to privacy in their intimate relationships, no one (least of all the Supreme Court) would have contemplated that the US government would turn this into a mandate to force underwriting of contraception by others. Actually the Court said gov’t could favor childbirth.
Yes, it is about religious freedom, but even more fundamentally important is that we have a federal government who have implemented a policy to discourage childbearing. Why?
Hi Xalisae,
Trouble is everyone isn’t going on the offensive, the defensiveness of the Republicans by even addressing this issue plays right into Obama’s hands. We go on the offensive and this is “evidence” of our oppostion to contraception. Also, no matter what, a loyal lapdog media is a valuable tool for Obama. If anything, a media made up of real journalists would be on the offensive. Look for this issue to have a long and very productive life.
Hi Barb,
Contraception was selected because abortion is no longer a winning issue for the Democrats. Obama needs a distraction from his failed policies. Its not about being “anti child” its about Obama getting another 4 years.
Sydney – while I disagree with some of your posts (for instance, I think that young folks essentially subsidize old people’s medicare and social security, so there is nothing wrong with old folks subsidizing eduction) – I do agree that public schools have agendas/teaching that people don’t agree with…so what is the bar that must be reached? When is it okay in your mind to trump somebody’s religious freedom? I mean, pacifists still pay taxes for wars…Catholics still pay taxes in death penalty states.
Barb -
Plain and simple, a lot of people that send a lot of money to the Democrats think contraception is part of comprehensive health insurance…so just like politics in general, politicians promote the agendas of people that give them money. Look at the donor list of any politician and you’ll know what their agenda is going to be like.
I’ve seen benefits listed by the AMA in regards to contraception and allowing couples to better space or delay having kids (and overall health benefits of that) – but I haven’t seen (nor looked for) any cost studies to suggest if there are savings incentives involved.
We go on the offensive and this is “evidence” of our oppostion to contraception.
Not if it’s done correctly. We just need better spinners.
Ex,
Tax dollars going to defense/wars is in the Constitution already, Article 1, Sec. 2 – for the common welfare and defense of our United States.
oops, sorry, I believe it’s Section 8 of the Consitution.
Doe – then we might be almost past this already – courts have weighed in before in regards to mandating contraception – so let’s just leave this to the courts as well.
Can I get a tax break because I am really, really morally opposed to eating meat or harming animals, and my dollars can go to facilities that use animal testing and farms that raise animals in ways I don’t agree with and slaughter them to eat? Shoot, I am steadfastly anti-death penalty and anti-incarceration of drug offenders, but I still pay a portion of my taxes that my state uses for these purposes.
My point is, conscience exemptions have to stop somewhere. I oppose the contraception mandate because it blatantly, specifically, orders people to do something regardless of their personal religious beliefs. But I am not sure if that translates into agreeing to vouchers for religious schools, getting some conscience tax exemption for those who oppose war, etc.
Hi Jack,
Good point. Its one thing to order people to do something against their religious convictions, whether its contraception, eating meat, or using electricity, and another to object to the use your tax dollars are put for. If you don’t like what your tax dollars are used for, write your congressperson.
Hi Xalisae 5:01PM
Having some real journalists in our nation’s media wouldn’t hurt either. I never thought I would miss Sam Donaldson!
Jack – I would agree with your argument if a person was mandated to use contraception – but without that mandate, I think both cases (vouchers and contraception) are saying that certain funds go to things that people don’t always agree with.
I simply think that it is about defining the line based on compelling reasons and not throwing trump cards simply because somebody is offended.
Ted Rall is sick.
it’s social justice vs real justice. I’m sure Rall would prefer to be unemployed instead of being shredded to pieces.
Then again, he can be employed as a poster child for “A mind is terrible thing to waste.”
All these cartoonists are useful tools, mere shills for the “party”.
Pathetic.
Having some real journalists in our nation’s media wouldn’t hurt either.
Wouldn’t hurt, but we have to deal with reality and what we do have. Someone who is actually GOOD at defending rather than deflecting, addressing each and every talking point sent out there to try and trap us, and then swiveling on the ground gained to play a good offense would help.
Saying cryptic things because you’re afraid you’re going to offend someone and pussyfooting around isn’t doing us any favors, and makes us look guilty. No wonder they’re pouncing.
When anyone wants someone with a REAL pair to get out there for us and aggressively state facts against a hostile media, let me know. I’m not afraid.
DUECES!
Obama apologizes to the Muslims for the burning of Korans while he mandates contraceptives, morning after pills and sterilizations being paid by Catholics, many other religions and most all businesses in this country. One thing for sure is fewer people will be the result from both happenings. I am surprised that no one else has connected these two news stories in their comments.
It never ceases to amaze me how unbelievably dishonest these people are. It’s practically criminal media malpractice. Obama attacked the Catholic Church, and the Church stood up for itself. Some GOPers stood with the church in defense of religious freedom. And yet this is a GOP “contraception flap.”
Its like when TERRI SCHIAVO’S FAMILY asked to be able to take care of her, and the media morphed it into evil GOP cynically trying to play to “far right zealots”. The media put Robert Schindler into an early grave after it helped murder his daughter.
We could all be working together to bankrupt the leftie media.
Advertisers can become aware of the leftie boycott. Turn off your television news.
Never ever ever click an ad if you wind up on a leftie internet site. Shop with your pro-lifers.
A little discipline on our side could bring great success.
Ron Paul and Newt Gingrich are being totally ignored now by the media. They must have really stepped on some media toes!
Andrew -
Well, that and the two of them are fading towards the back of the pack. Both have had their days in the sun…were vetted, and have been tossed aside as 2nd tier candidates. I don’t think it has as much to do about the mainstream media as it does about their election chances.
Ex-RINO. Today’s polling numbers show Obama at his lowest approval rating in months.
45% approve and 50% disapprove. How’s that contraception issue working for ya?
