Lunch Break: Be like Mike
by LauraLoo
MJ’s 7-acre estate in Highland Park, Illinois is selling for $29 million.
This estate lacks the warmth and charm that most women love, but then – the owner caused a broken life and misery for his then wife. No amount of money or possessions can cover an adulterous heart.
Another piece of information: MJ is only paying $165,000 property taxes on this $29M estate.
Thoughts?

$165,000 is a little over half a percent of the asking price. I assume the tax is based on the assessed value, or possibly the prior purchase price.
Median real estate taxes in Highland Park, IL, are around 1.6%, so it sounds like the assessed value is more like $10 million to me.
It’s still a lot of money to pay to the gov’t. Why should it be so much more than for somebody else who has a much cheaper house?
It’s quite common to use property taxes to fund schools. If another family lived next door, and they had 20 kids, but a much cheaper place, they’d pay far lower taxes. What sense does that make?
Should people who don’t have any kids have to support the schools at all?
The property tax is based on the assessed value of the home, which is probably much less than 29M. They are probably hoping to get more than what the house is valued at because of the property’s famous owner and the uniqueness of the home.
MJ still pays more in annual taxes than what my parents’ house is currently valued at, and they don’t live all that far from each other!
Awesome house.
I am in love!
Very cold, sterile and unfeeling house if you ask me. I wouldn’t want to live there. Reminds me of the old Dionne Warwick song “A chair is just a chair if there is no one sitting there…But a house is not a home if there is no one there who can say good night” (or something like that). God help the man, his ex, and his children who lived there. The old saying goes “there are blessings that money cannot buy”. I say amen to that like LIFE, LOVE, JOY, PEACE, REST, HEALTH, FAITH, LOVING FAMILY and LIBERTY.
This is excessive materialism, egotistical… all for being able to sheet a basketball

Don’t be hatin’
Think of all the guys who got a paycheck building that thing. It may be excess to you but it feeds their kids. On second thought, Jordan should’ve blown his $$ on cocaine.
Kidding!!!
Michael Jordan could sheet out a basketball? Well now, that is something….
… immoral as well.
