Famed British broadcaster: People are “a plague on the earth”
We are a plague on the earth. It’s coming home to roost over the next 50 years or so. It’s not just climate change; it’s sheer space, places to grow food for this enormous horde. Either we limit our population growth or the natural world will do it for us, and the natural world is doing it for us right now….
We keep putting on programmes about famine in Ethiopia; that’s what’s happening. Too many people there. They can’t support themselves — and it’s not an inhuman thing to say. It’s the case. Until humanity manages to sort itself out and get a coordinated view about the planet it’s going to get worse and worse.
~ British broadcaster Sir David Attenborough, as quoted by The Telegraph, January 22. Attenborough is a patron of The Optimum Population Trust, which recommends a two-child policy for families and also supports abortion and homosexuality as two means of curbing population growth.
LiveScience has more to say on the topic, including the insistence that what the world needs now is more contraceptives.

So take one for the team and remove yourself from the planet, good Sir.

The belief that we are plague, that is the disease. We’ve made mistakes but we are not a plague. We need to work together. This is the very disease from which we need to heal. Killing our children is not the answer. Our children are our treasure. Corruption, not population, is a big problem. Working together for all humanity, we can solve our problems. The universe is full of resources. We can’t even measure it and here are knuckleheads that are willing to throw in the towel before we even get started. Attenborough, if you don’t want to be part of the solution, shut your pie hole and let the rest of us carry on. Nihilists, get out of our way and let us heal.

Sir David,
You first.
Now that you have contributed your two cents to the discussion it is time for you to practice what you preach by hopping on the nearest ice flow and recycling yourself. Please take two like minded friends with you when you go. With ‘global warming’ all around, you would not want to waste any available space on the ever diminishing ice.

Animal agriculture is our world’s biggest problem. The only good thing about it is that people who eat animals die sooner. Unfortunately, they suffer many years of increasing disability before death. Eat to Live! (as Dr. Fuhrman would say) www.drmcdougall.com A long and peaceful life to our brethren!

’Man,’ said the Ghost, ‘if man you be in heart, not adamant, forbear that wicked cant until you have discovered What the surplus is, and Where it is. Will you decide what men shall live, what men shall die? It may be, that in the sight of Heaven, you are more worthless and less fit to live than millions like this poor man’s child. Oh God! to hear the Insect on the leaf pronouncing on the too much life among his hungry brothers in the dust.’ – Charles Dickens, “A Christmas Carol”
Attenborough is your typical population control Nazi. There’s just enough of him, too much of everyone else. So of course everyone else has to go. If he truly believed that humans were a plague on the earth, he’d go on a murderous rampage and kill as many people as he could before taking himself out. Since he hasn’t, it’s obvious that he believes in a modern caste system — all the poor, worthless people have to go because the rich entitled elites like himself deserve life (and luxury).

famine isn’t caused by not having enough space. Famine is caused by corrupt governments.

It’s not *good* that people who eat animals die sooner. You do have a point that raising livestock is much less energy and cost effective than raising crops.
The problem with starvation has to do with distribution, not overpopulation. The US alone throws out I think half as much food as we eat, which is wasteful and ridiculous. At the same time it’s hard to transport food to war torn regions.
I have read that clean water is much more of an issue than food at the moment, since even developed nations are going to have severe shortages if something doesn’t happen quickly. Everyone stop watering your lawns.

JoAnna, that’s a perfect quote! My first question when someone spouts off about “overpopulation” is “Who gets to decide which people have to go? And what makes them less worthy of life?”

Population control is so 1970s! Don’t people realize that first-world populations are imploding? We only sustain our population in the U.S. due to immigration. And Obama wants more contraceptives and abortion, with a sluggish economy. Who’s going to provide a market for our products?

Since its developing nations that are showing large increases in population, who do you think goes first? As a person of color, this type of thinking makes me nervous.
On another note, I guess I am a “bad prolifer” but I do believe that the number of people the earth can support is finite. It’s been shown that the best way to decrease familiy size is to provide more opportunities for women, whether it be schooling or providing poor women with micro loans to start their own businesses.

The planet next door to us has water, dirt, approx. 25 hours per rotation, and a tolerable temperature where the sun hits (like our equator, but cooler). Our pollution? Would be a great asset on a planet that NEEDS a greenhouse effect in order to be optimally terra-formed. There are many scientists who’ve come up with colonization plans, and some of them are actually feasible! So, as I said, nihilists, get out of our way. Defund all abortion facilities worldwide and free up the money to get started. We can begin colonization now, with the technology we already have.
How many population haters does it take to screw in a lightbulb? None. They’d rather sit in the dark and complain.

Attenborough is suffering from a form of “Stockholm Syndrome” in his extensive (and fine) study of nature. He”s forgotten we are just as valid a part of it.
Wolves are a plague on deer. Deer are a plague on vegetation. Only humans care to adjust their foraging for food to benefit all. We only need better management and decision-making, not less of us.

Bull. Japan is far more densely populated than Ethiopia and the Japanese aren’t suffering famine. Famine is caused by tyrants and bad weather.

“supports homosexuality as a way to limit population”? Do they anti-population people on the left, as well, need to learn that sexual orientation isn’t a choice? People don’t “turn gay” as a way to keep the number of people on earth down…
