Donald Sterling not the only racist on Clippers team: Yo, J.J. Redick
News broke April 25 that Donald Sterling, the owner of the L.A. Clippers, made racist remarks to his mixed race mistress, V. Stiviano (both pictured right).
According to TMZ.com:
L.A. Clippers owner Donald Sterling told his GF he does NOT want her bringing black people to his games … including Magic Johnson … and it’s ALL on tape.
TMZ Sports has obtained audio of Sterling making the racist declaration during a heated argument on April 9th with V. Stiviano … after she posted a photo on Instagram posing with Magic.
Sterling rails on Stiviano – who ironically is black and Mexican – for putting herself out in public with a black person…. Among the comments:
— “It bothers me a lot that you want to broadcast that you’re associating with black people. Do you have to?” (3:30)
— “You can sleep with [black people]. You can bring them in, you can do whatever you want. The little I ask you is not to promote it on that … and not to bring them to my games.” (5:15)…
— “…Don’t put him [Magic] on an Instagram for the world to have to see so they have to call me. And don’t bring him to my games.” (9:13)
Clippers team members staged a silent protest before Game 4 of the first-round NBA play-offs April 27 by wearing their warm-up shirts inside out.
Player J.J. Redick blamed their subsequent 118-97 loss to the Golden State Warriors on the controversy, saying, according to Yahoo Sports, “Maybe our focus wasn’t in the right place would be the easiest way to say it.”
Redick is simply a whopping hypocrite, himself a racist who has no trouble tossing racial slurs.
On March 24 I released an email Redick wrote to his attorney October 18, 2007, regarding his Hispanic girlfriend, Vanessa Lopez (both pictured right), who he had just coerced into aborting their baby via his infamous abortion contract.
Lopez forwarded the email to me, explaining that it had been forwarded to her by Redick’s brother attached to another email that contained a cartoon of a monkey eating fried chicken and a watermelon.
WARNING: Contains vulgarity and racial epithets:
The media was not interested when I originally posted the above email. Maybe now it will care?
Don’t you just hate it when facts follow you around. What about it JJ?

Donald Sterling is now $700 million richer after having been banned for life. I’m sure the offers may exceed that amount. Do you think he gives a flying saucer about the ban being 80 and filthy rich (richer now). Do you honestly think that Sterling will pay that 2.5 mil fine? HAHAHA. Symbolic move that means nothing…
At least Ditka suffered and his career was over and his money was over.
The only realistic thing that may come out of this, is that V. Stiviano may take him to the cleaners and get a cut from his fortune for her pain and suffering?

Emails are extremely easy to fake. And it’s pretty convenient for Lopez’s story that she deleted the email from Reddick’s brother. I think it’s pretty ridiculous to take it at face value. I don’t consider it evidence. There’s plenty of evidence that Redick has done some terrible things without believing things with no solid evidence, at all. I’d like to hear the voicemail his brother in law allegedly left her, unless it’s “deleted” too.
And it didn’t sound like Redick was even referring to the racism as a bad thing, lol, he’s just mad that his majority black teammates didn’t ignore the gross and racist stuff Sterling said long enough to put in a good game. Kinda hard to rock it when your boss obviously considers you subhuman.

Comments from Clippers coach Doc Rivers over the weekend…
“J.J. Redick is as pissed as Chris Paul,” Rivers told TMZ before the Clippers practice at Golden State, where they play on Sunday leading 2-1 in the best of seven. NBA Commissioner Adam Silver had previously been scheduled to attend that game.
“I don’t know if I’m surprised or not. I didn’t like the comments,” Rivers said, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. “I’m going to tell you that I’m speaking on behalf of the team, so the players are not going to deal with this issue.”

More news: Silver wants franchise owners to force Sterling to sell the team as NBA does not have the authority to affect that. So Sterling is banned and removed from daily decision-making but retains ownership and with that still making profit for himself.
Marc Cuban, the owner of Dallas Mavericks and very influential amongst the franchise owners, called ousting Sterling “a slippery slope” (one that opens forcing owners to sell teams for all sorts of issues). There has to be a 75 percent consensus amongst owners to force Sterling to sell. They will not vote the way Silver wants them to.
So as it is, this move is truly meaningless and will accomplish nothing as at the end of the day ultimately Sterling remains the owner and will continue rolling in dough and laughing all the way to the bank.
For what its worth, I agree that Sterling is an old bigot and his comments were not warranted and hurtful…..

His comments were awful, but I think the worse issue is his housing discrimination against blacks and Latinos, apparently he was sued and fined for refusing to rent to blacks and Latinos because they “smell bad” and “bring in vermin”. Good thing Fair Housing laws exist.

Sounds like a rich racist old boyfriend may have been set up by his mistress. She knew he was a racist, and with a little baiting she recorded him? Do I have that right? I smell a gold digger that got fed up. Things that make ya go hmm.
I’ve known a lot of people that had racist opinions, and you know what? Its corny and true that sometimes they are one friendship away from losing their prejudice. I’m real proud of certain people I know that have seen the light.
Be aware of how racism is used for other purposes. As rotten as are the comments he made, he may not be the only villain in this story and I bet there’s more to it.

Eh, in my experience the racists who “see the light” usually only see the light for that particular person. I’ve worked with people who just despise Hispanics, but don’t have a problem with me, either because I am only half and “look white”, or for whatever reason. They separate their acquaintance or other “good minorities” from the stereotype they still hold about the other people of that minority. I do think people can really change, I just have rarely seen it when it comes to racists.
And plus it’s absolutely exhausting to “represent” your race to try and fix uneducated and willfully ignorant people. I don’t think bigots are owed minority friends, they owe the world effort to get over their bigotry. And personally I find it nearly impossible to attempt to be friends with people who are racists, I just consider them stupid (haha, that’s MY bigotry).
And anyway, he’s not a run of the mill bigoted white guy. He’s a dude who owns properties that discriminated against non-whites, which in some areas it is a huge problem to find housing if you aren’t white. I care much less about his ignorant and hurtful comments and much more about the consequences of his views causing people to be unable to access housing.

I in no way advocate anything this man said. But I think there’s another issue here. How many of us would get in a lot of trouble if the conversations we expected to be private, especially in our own homes, were made public without our knowledge or permission?

I agree Mary. I watched a bit of this on some tabloid show and they kept playing it over and over again. I remember Jessie Jackson speaking out when Cleveland Cavs owner Dan Gilbert had a “slave owners mentality.” Huh? He said this when we lost Lebron. He spoiled him rotten. Sports and racism will never die. Re this guy…she said on the tape that she was part black part mexican.

Sorry JJ said Dan Gilbert had a slave owner mentality over Lebron. They pulled the plug on that. Im just bored with this story already. Im sure he will make his apologies and I hope everyone will move on.

I agree about the mistress 9ek!!! She is not in it for love and most likely knew for sometime what type of guy Sterling is. She may get some money out of it as I stated above, but she does not have my support for the reasons you listed…

And Im not going to start on Lopez again but Id read that she checked into an Orlando hospital after an 18 week abortion from JJ. She had a high fever and almost lost her life. I guess shes said she never wanted the abortion so of course JJ is now saying…it wasnt his kid. Must be someone else. She quickly began an affair with Shaquille Oneil who was married. She tried to take him to court but attorney Gloria Allred dropped her because she couldnt keep her lies straight. Now shes penning a tell all book called FOULS OF THE COURT.

Lol, Jack, the people you refer to are obviously still racist. But yes, the mistress didn’t just discover her rich dude’s opinion. Regarding ubiquitous race card shark Sharpton weighing in: lots of idiots like him will grab media time being indignant before they move on to the next opportunity.

Deluded, that doesn’t mean anything. Thomas Jefferson wrote that black women have such animalistic sexual desires that we will mate with orangutans when no human males are around (which is pretty stupid, because there are no orangs in Africa). Yet, he had an affair with his wife’s half sister, “quadroon” slave Sally Hemmings for DECADES. It was an open secret at the time; gossips referred to her as “dusky Sally.” Despite the fact that she had children with him, he never set her free and when he died she was sold to the University of Virginia to help pay off his debts, yet some see this as a tragic love story. Sorry, but you DON’T SELL SOMEONE YOU LOVE!
What’s ironic is that Sterling is Jewish. I would think he would know better, but he doesn’t.

Okay so how does this change anything?
I’m kinda amazed that people are turning it into a kinda “poor Sterling” thing with trying to blame it on his girlfriend or make it about his privacy. The dude has been an out and blatant racist forever, he’s been sued for refusing to rent to blacks and Hispanics, among other things. He obviously doesn’t care that much if people know he’s a racist, and his 2.5 mil fine isn’t even pennies to him.
I don’t really care what the girlfriend did, I don’t base my opinion of the dude on her. This isn’t a recent thing, if you follow basketball at all you’ll see he’s been accused of being racist towards his players multiple times as well as the Fair Housing violations for his properties, etc. If anything I’m glad the girlfriend publicized it, the NBA ignored the complaints against him for years.

People really think that’s a “love” story? I don’t think you can love someone you own, much less sell. And she was probably about fourteen years old, some people believe, when the adult Jefferson started his “affair” (rape) with her. I was glad to hear that he at least freed her children she had with him. So many of those creepy white slave owners kept their own children in slavery their whole lives.
I guess Sally was freed in the last years of her life and spent nine years living in freedom with her sons. So at least she got some freedom. It’s still ridiculous that people see the Hemmings/Jefferson thing as something positive.

Throughout the centuries girls, women, boys, and men were forced into sexual slavery. It goes on even now, with humans of all ages and both genders being treated as “prizes” in warfare, social upheavel, and on the streets of our cities and those around the world.
Hardly love, but for sexual slaves like Sally Hemmings and all those who preceded her in the U.S. and the world over, and for those who would follow, the alternative could be much, much worse, such as being sold to who knows who or what, forced into brutal labor, or brutally punished and/or executed for attempting to escape. There was little concern for the “humane” treatment of slaves, so an “owner” could inflict any type of brutality he/she saw fit.
Certainly not everyone who works the streets and “houses” the world over is doing so willingly.

Hi Jack,
I have no sympathy for Sterling or his racism. Nor do I excuse it.
The fact remains that we should be able to hold private conversations in the privacy of our homes without the PC police ready to pounce. I may not like something you say. Well sorry, but its your home. You spoke privately to someone. Does anyone think these bastions of political correctness and tolerance never privately make some dubious comments they wouldn’t want publicized? I can assure you they do as I have heard them. Its likely someone could take all of us to task if our every conversation was recorded, without our permission, and publicized.
Violating Fair Housing laws and public displays of racism toward players are different matters altogether and should certainly have been addressed. So why weren’t they? Why was he given a free pass until now?
I think Richard Nixon thought he could have private conversations too, lol. ;) Anyway, I don’t really get your point. Because it was a conversation between him and his girlfriend (publicized by her, not the invisible “PC police”), his views don’t matter and should be ignored? Don’t get it. I don’t believe I’ve ever said anything privately that I don’t mean, I don’t get the dishonesty.
I don’t know why no one did anything about his outrageous behavior (I suspect money), but I do know the NBA didn’t care until the girlfriend here (regardless of her motives) publicized his racist statements. So I am glad she did.
You guys are making it out like a conspiracy against the idiot, it’s his own doing. You don’t want people to think you’re a racist and not want to do business with you? Maybe try not being a racist?

Hi Jack,
Well if Nixon wanted a private conversation he shouldn’t have recorded himself, right? That was his decision. Also, I would think one would be considerably more careful when one knows one is being recorded. Like it or not Nixon, like you, was entitled to private conversations. Just have the good sense to shut off the recorder. And if someone is recording you without your permission and reporting it, your reaction will be what??
Sterling had long gotten away with violating the law and that’s what I have an issue with, not what some person, however hateful and racist, says in the privacy of their home.
We can object to and find anything anyone says abhorrent. We can condemn it. No one forces us to listen to or tolerate that person. Its another matter altogether when we have our every utterances, however private, recorded and reported by people who decide what we can or cannot say.
I find it ironic that if I was going around asking for a killer to knock off someone, the police could do little without solid evidence. Unless police could prove otherwise, I could claim its “just talk”.

No, if they can prove that you got together with another person and discussed and planned the crime, then you can get conspiracy charges. You can’t evade conspiracy charges by claiming “privacy”, “free speech” or “just talk”.
I suppose you think that Clinton shouldn’t have been impeached, then? Since the story may not have blown (no pun intended) open the way it did if Tripp hadn’t recorded her conversations with Lewinsky? Or am I misunderstanding you?

Hi Jack,
That’s the key word, “prove”, which may be a long involved process involving undercover work, recordings, and exchange of money. Any slipup and a very smart lawyer can claim it was a setup. I can claim it was “just talk”.
With Clinton it involved his actions, not his words. There was an ongoing investigation already in progress.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Impeachment_of_Bill_Clinton
I said Sterling should have been taken to task for his actions.

Clinton was impeached (on paper) for all the wrong reasons. He should have been impeached for his crazy idea that every American should own a home whether they can afford the mortgage or not. We’ve seen the aftermath of his economic policies in the collapse that followed….

Is it okay to criticize useless bans that accomplish nothing?
I just heard that Silver had the option to take away the draft picks from the Clippers but instead he took symbolic action that in all actuality did not penalize Sterling at all. Feel-good phenomenon hard at work here…

I just heard some more on Oprah’s desire to buy the Clippers.
Imagine that – an African American female wanting to do business with a hard-core racist.
Banned for life by Silver but re-affirmed by Oprah??????
Interesting….

Why would it be wrong to criticize the ban that was largely symbolic?
Problem with banning the Clippers from getting draft picks is that it just harms the whole team instead of just Sterling.

But that is the point of a sancion Jack -it has to hurt where it counts!
The fine was levied on Sterling not the organization and as I stated, Silver may never see the 2.5 mil becauase if Sterling chooses to tie it up in litigation, Silver will first retire. The ban I already stated my opinion on….
But let’s get to Oprah – how come she is not outraged????

Does anyone have an issue with Sterling, a married man, openly attending NBA games with his current mistress? A man having a mistress doesn’t shock me, but I usually expect a little more discretion. Or with his history of cavorting with prostitutes? Or his describing in detail his activities with prostitutes?
This is someone who…gasp!..makes racist comments?
Why, you could just knock me over with a feather.

I think you just disapprove that I am more methodical about this fiasco basically. Do I come across worst than anybody else who commented with a little twist, rather than fall all over the racist remarks?
I think you’re just picking on me now :)

Good point. Eliot might have a little trouble attracting the prostitutes though, since as “Client No.9” he was notorious for his brutal abuse of women, even by call girl standards.
The “madam” told of getting a knock on her door and there was the then attorney general(Spitzer) of the state of New York requesting her services. The guy must have thought he was invisible.
You can’t make this stuff up.

Nice catch!
What really gets me with Sterling is that he already got in trouble for refusing to rent apartments to African Americans (he’s a slum lord, as well as a team owner), but that didn’t make the news the way this business has, and it certainly didn’t impact his relationship with the NBA or NAACP. Apparently saying derogatory things about Magic Johnson is far more offensive than actually harming poor people who are limited in their ability to defend themselves.

Do you think that was really his first conversation about being a racist with the mistress? I agree with Mary about privacy in your own home or phone calls. What was she hoping to gain by exposing him? My deceased husband was Jewish so naturally the KKK would hate us and our son too. I really hate racial debates. They get us nowhere. Im not siding with Sterling but is the gold digging mistress really any better? Accepting gifts from a married man and having an affair?Ok lady give the gifts back and wash your hands of him.

So he told his mistress he didn’t want her bringing Johnson or any other black men to the games. Probably cause he understood that most of the NBA stars pride themselves on ‘studding’ and he didn’t want her hanging out with them on his dime. He has that right.

And the NBA has the right to try and banish him too. This is not even news in my book except to show how people are losing their privacy.

I believe Sterling is a creep for cheating on his his wife the way he did; but I also think Sterling deserves an expectation of privacy and freedom of speech while in his home.

He’s not some quiet bigot in private. He had multiple lawsuits against him for refusing to rent to minorities, and people have been complaining about his racism towards non-whites in his business dealings forever. The NBA just ignored it because it never got that publicized.
If he wanted privacy maybe he should have picked a more discreet mistress.
I find it interesting you think it’s wrong he was cheating, and see nothing wrong with his racism. It doesn’t surprise me but it’s quite disappointing.

Hi deluded I didnt know about Sterlings past as a slum lord but I saw it from TS POV. Perhaps it wasnt about race as much as he didnt want the limelight on anyone but his players. How racist can the guy be when he lavished the finest gifts on his half black half Mexican mistress?

Face it…..if Magic Johnson ever came to a game the focus would be on him. Maybe the players who werent on the team would take the focus off of the clippers?? Also can anyone tell me how on earth Howard Sterns gets away with blatant racism yet never apologizes nor do people ask him to? BTW hes taking up for Sterling as I figured he would be.

How racist can the guy be?
Heather, he’s a notorious, not even remotely apologetic racist. When he was sued for housing discrimination the suit (which was found valid and he was ordered to pay) stated that he thinks hispanics just drink, smoke, and hang around the building, and black tenants smell bad and bring in the vermin. That’s just the tip of the iceberg. ESPN has been complaining about the dude for over a decade.
White slave owners used to have sex with their black slaves, I don’t think the fact that he wants to sleep with a mixed race woman makes him not racist. There’s a “fetish” thing that some racist dudes got going on, which is pretty gross.
It wasn’t about Magic. Celebrities go to basketball games all the time and no one cares. Sterlings just a nasty bigot and has been his entire life, and anyone who has followed basketball at all knows it.
It will never cease to amaze me the length people will go to to deny racism, even when the racist is upfront and unapologetic about it! Why are you all trying to make it “poor Sterling” and blame her? She’s pretty bad for sleeping with a married man, but I don’t get the reluctance to condemn a racist, slumlord, serial cheater like Sterling.

I don’t like Stern, but I am not sure how it’s relevant? He’s a shock jock, everything he says is to make people mad. I find it difficult to get mad at people who try to deliberately offend. As opposed to Sterling, who is genuinely harming people by refusing to rent to them because they have the wrong skin color.
Oh and he’s also been sued for sexual harassment multiple times and has admitted to paying women for sex. Real winner there.

People should ignore him. He’s not clever, he’s not making social satire, he’s not even funny, he should just be ignored imo. I roll my eyes at him.

It’s because he’s a “comedian” (technically, he’s not funny but I guess he’s trying). If you go around freaking out over what comedians says you would probably never stop. I think people mostly ignore him because he hasn’t been relevant in like twenty years.

Joan Rivers reply. “Everyone calm effing down.” “Im a comedian and I wont apologize.” Everyone backed off in April. Funny huh?

Ever have to go to the bathroom in a bucket that would overflow with your own human waste Joan? Ever have to drink tea for 5 days and do strenuous exercise until you miscarried a baby like Michelle Knight? Ever volunteer to be raped as Michelle often did so Castro wouldnt rape Gena? A comedian should be held accountable too.

Hi heather,
Your point is a valid one. A definite double standard. I heard Stern also ridiculed a mentally challenged young woman on his program. So where’s the outrage? Oh that’s right, he’s just a “shock-jock”. Well, that excuses everything.
There’s a video on youtube with various racist and homophobic quotes and rants from Al Charlatan, to call that man a “Reverend” makes me gag, that is so vile I won’t post it here, anyone can check it out. BTW, he still has his TV and radio shows, had a seat of honor at the inauguration, and is a frequently “consulted” by Obama and others in power.

Hey come on heather,
So Joan ridiculed those girls. Where’s your sense of humor??
Don’t you know we have freedom of speech in this country, however unacceptable people may find it?

Mary: Al has a divinity degree but Jesse does not. Its all the reason to expect more from an ordained minister. I’d give a pass to Jesse as he is only self-ordained but Al should know better.

More news:
it is estimated to take up to 2 wks for all the franchise owners to come to a decision on whether to force Sterling to sell. There is also speculation that Sterling will litigate the “fine” and if forced to sell. Advertisers are pulling out (more than I can say about the decision not to withhold draft picks, that would have been more immediate a sanction) but nonetheless advertisers are punishing the organization now.
And silence from Oprah but speculation on Magic Johnson as a possible contender for the team…

Right Mary..where in the world has my humor gone over racism and rape and misogyny?? My bad. Heck its just comedy right? Where is the outrage? I remember Chris Matthews saying something racist and Whoopi Goldberg racing to his defense. She said ” Chris is a good friend of mine and he is not a racist.” Double standards indeed!
