Actress Lily Tomlin: Discussing abortion is more open today
by Carder
Well, since my earlier days, that’s a long time ago, and, my God, people barely talked about it. I mean, enlightened people might, I won’t even lay that on them.
I would say the people who were more conscious or more aware might discuss it or make that choice or whatever, but, most people, it was a secret… and the subject was taboo.
I’m talking about back in the 60s and 70s, in general society, although, that’s not really the absolute thrust of this movie. It’s more about our relationships.
So, yes, I think it’s much more open, as everything is.
~ Actress Lily Tomlin comparing the public discussion of abortion back in her day versus now and as it relates to the pro-abortion film “Grandma,”, as quoted by Slate, January 29

The SLATE blogpost also describes Obvious Child as “last year’s indie hit.”
Things are more open now? Yes, I suppose that there is a class of people who wear their shame on their sleeves and defiantly dare us to approve of their choices. That hasn’t done a thing to make pornography, abortion, hooking up, or pot-smoking any more good, but it is more open.
You can’t even bring yourself to say the “A” word Lily.

U wot m8?
Grandma is a lesbian.
Daughter is a single Mom by anonymous sperm donor.
Granddaughter needs $600 for her abortion today, won’t tell Mom, and so Grandma hits the road to beg up some cash. (Plot device: nobody has credit cards.)
==========================
Plot Summary:
In “Grandma,” Lily Tomlin is Elle Reid. Elle has just gotten through breaking up with her girlfriend when Elle’s granddaughter Sage unexpectedly shows up needing $600 bucks before sundown. Temporarily broke, Grandma Elle and Sage spend the day trying to get their hands on the cash as their unannounced visits to old friends and flames end up rattling skeletons and digging up secrets.

Lily who?
I suppose that there is a class of people who wear their shame on their sleeves and defiantly dare us to approve of their choices – you have misinterpreted. It’s not shame they wear on their sleeves, it’s demonstrating that they won’t allow you to confect some sort of shame you wish to foist on them. Nor do they need or want you to approve of their choices. What they are saying is that you have no right to attempt to interfere.
Sad reasoning, that we “have no right to interfere” with murder. :-(
Many Americans “had no right to interfere” with abuse and even murder of slaves – who were, after all, “only 2/3 human”.
Thank God they did not ask anyone for permission to interfere.
Except that abortion isn’t murder Claire.
Trying to compare abortion and slavery is a false equivalence.
You’re in ‘good’ company, unReality.
You’re right in there with the drafters of the Dred Scott decision which declared slaves to be “2/3 people”.
And with the Nazis who dehumanized Jews as well.
Enjoy the company.
You must be confused. You appear unable to discern the vast difference.
Comparisons between abortion and slavery or the holocaust are incorrect, unjustifiable and invalid.
Commenters who notice Reality will be frustrates by an “Alice in Wonderland” maze of illogic.
“Reality” believes in the Velveteen Rabbit philosophy of when life begins.
In The Velveteen Rabbit, a charming kids book, a toy stuffed-animal becomes real once the child grows to truly love it.
Posts previous to this have shown “Reality” explaining when life begins: a fetus becomes human when someone begins to love it.
This is such a quaint, charming idea that it is difficult to present any such believer with the scientific view that life begins not when the fetus is loved, or taken home, or has slipped 2/3 of the way out of the vaginal canal, but at conception.
So, please, everyone, be patient with “Reality.” He or she is at the level of kids’ books when discussing when life begins.
Interesting that you have such familiarity with fables and stuff TLD. Not surprising though.
Posts previous to this have shown “Reality” explaining when life begins: a fetus becomes human when someone begins to love it. – I see you still haven’t got a grip on the whole paying attention thing. Maybe if you took your head out of Aesop’s Fables and actually read what I wrote you’d be at least a bit accurate.
So, please, everyone, be patient with “Reality.” He or she – and you’ve ‘seen’ me here for how long? Your observation skills need remediation.
is at the level of kids’ books when discussing when life begins. – maybe if your reading had developed beyond childrens books you’d be able to respond to what I’ve said rather than your imagination.
TLD made an excellent analogy. There’s no confusion here, “reality”. Only in your mind.
Comparisons between abortion and slavery and the holocaust are completely valid.
Enslavement/murder of innocents is the common denominator.
Well you’d like to think so, I know that.
TLD claims words for me which I have not written.
TLD has responded to my comments for quite some time yet, unlike others, seems unsure of my gender.
There is no enslavement/murder of innocents in abortion. All the other parameters are also invalid.
Comparisons between abortion and slavery and the Nazi holocaust are completely valid.
Enslavement/murder of innocents is the common denominator.
Abortion takes the life of innocents. Taking someone’s life is murder.
You can keep repeating your little placard lines, it doesn’t make them true.
If you cannot ascertain the difference between how the holocaust was organized and carried out and at what level compared to how abortions are effected then……
Enslavement/murder of innocents is the common denominator. – yet that isn’t happening with abortion.
Abortion takes the life of innocents. – then so is eating meat. Are you a vegetarian?
Taking someone’s life is murder. – you’d better let Rick Perry know then hey.
