Wasserman Schultz was “face of Florida’s push” for Schiavo death

by Kelli

wassermanschiavoLooking back at the appeals and legislation surrounding the Terri Schiavo case makes my head spin. At the time, my family and I followed every twist, every turn, and every detail of her family’s struggle to keep her alive….

One person I remember well from that time is Long Island’s own Debbie Wasserman Schultz, who decided to stay in Florida after earning her Political Science degrees there (along with a certificate in political campaigning that would serve her well)…. Wasserman Shultz was the public face of Florida’s push to let Schiavo die….

Wasserman Schultz seemed to soak it up, hopping from interview to interview. When she told everyone she had “just gone through this with her husband’s aunt” – not her own child or blood relation – I cringed. Her motives seemed more blatantly political than personal to me….

She seemed less concerned with Terri Schiavo than making a name for herself. And for all the airtime time she copped during the legal mess that was the Schiavo case, I can only find one video of Wasserman Schultz speaking about it during that time. Every appearance she made leading up to the death of Terri Schiavo seems to have been scrubbed from the internet….

Wasserman Schultz repeatedly criticized Terri’s Bill as “overstepping Congressional authority.” She ranted about “separation of powers” and “states’ rights.” “When I ran for Congress, I didn’t ask my constituents for the right to make these decisions,” she said. “We’re not God.” I can only imagine how spitting mad she would have been if George W. Bush had forced the Affordable Care Act on her constituents.

Pro-life vid of day: Popular post-abortive Spanish TV ad now in English

post-abortive help for post-abortion suffering

by Kelli

From the Family Life Council comes a video which cements the idea that “there is something more painful than giving birth to a child.”

According to FLC:

The spot is an adaptation of the original spot in Spanish, produced by Proyecto Esperanza, a Latin American post-abortion help organization headquartered in Santiago, Chile. It aired on national TV in Chile during a Proyecto Esperanza media campaign a number of years ago. Response was excellent, with many women (and some men) calling for more information, and to request help with post-abortion healing. Proyecto Esperanza leaders Elizabeth Bunster and Adriana Avendańo are excited to be able to share their very successful video with abortion recovery efforts in other countries.

Focus on babies in missing Malaysian jet perturbs abortion advocate

This tweet by Jodi Jacobson, editor-in-chief of the pro-abortion website RH Reality Check, is a great prospect for psychoanalysis:

The pro-abortion mind never fails to amaze me. Who would think of something like that, other than someone whose frontal lobe is steeped in abortion support?

Jacobson was right that initial news reports on the likely disaster, and many headlines, included a special notation that either one or two infants were among the passengers…

Documentary follows abortionist who skirts international abortion laws

Rebecca GompertsI also immediately appreciated the metaphor of women leaving sovereignty to reclaim her own…. I had also lived in Indonesia and witnessed what happened when women don’t have access to safe abortion and it made an impression on me.

I knew it would make a great story.

Stanek Sunday Word: “This nation would not exist had God not been the midwife of its birth”

washington-praying“These are the things that I know. I know there is a God, and I know this nation would not exist had he not been the midwife of its birth. And I know that this nation exists by the providence of his hand, and if this nation forgets our God, then God will have every right to forget us,” Huckabee said. “I hope that we repent before we ever have to receive his fiery judgment”….

Huckabee warned that “a society that sacrifices its own children is no better than the ancient Philistines,” and criticized the Obama administration for its policy requiring contraception coverage in insurance plans, warning they’re impeding on religious liberty.

“When the government begins to say ‘it’s okay if you have faith but you can only have this much of it because, when you have this much of it, it may somehow conflict with something government has passed, here’s what I know: It’s time for the government to scale back, not for people of faith to scale back. Religious liberty should be unimpeded in this nation.”

New CNN poll: Most Americans don’t like or want to pay for abortion

120122113142-dc-abortion-protest-story-top

A new CNN poll has found that more than half of Americans believe abortion should be restricted, and a majority of Americans oppose taxpayer funding of abortions.

According to CNN, 27% of those surveyed said abortion should be legal in all circumstances, while 13% said the practice should be legal in most circumstances. However, 38% of those polled said abortion should be legal in few circumstances and 20% said it should always be illegal, leaving a total of 58% who said abortion should be restricted to few situations or always illegal.

Most Americans have never supported taxpayer funding of abortion and, according to this survey, 56% remain opposed and only 39% favor taxpayer funding of the practice of abortion.

Stanek weekend question: Who’s to blame for abortion regret?

160061588.jpg.CROP.rectangle3-largeThis weekend question comes via abortion apologist Amanada Marcotte, who wrote at RH Reality Check on March 3:

Iowa is now considering a bill that would allow abortion patients to sue a doctor for abortion regret, even if they received counseling and signed informed consent forms prior to the abortion. The bill gives women a ten-year window to come to the conclusion that they regret their abortion and to sue. Since none of us really knows where we’ll be in ten years, this opens abortion providers up to all sorts of unfair lawsuits, since there’s no way to know that the 21-year-old women’s studies major with a pro-choice button on her bag getting an abortion today is going to get married and join a fundamentalist church and decide she must produce “abortion regret” in penance before she’s 30.

More to the point, the bill shows how cynical and insincere anti-choicers are when they pretend to care about women experiencing abortion regret. If they actually cared about women who are suffering from abortion regret, they wouldn’t blame the doctor. They would blame the people who actually caused the regret. For instance, you would be able to sue a partner or parent who shamed you, or your church for telling you that your past behavior was sinful, or your local anti-choice organization for provoking these feelings of shame and regret. That makes a whole lot more sense that blaming the doctor.

If you read the abortion regret stories that proliferate in anti-choice circles, what comes across loud and clear is that the feelings of regret owe far more to the pressure from churches and right-wing organizations and other people in the community who shame women than to doctors – who in many cases were the only people who were generous and non-shaming to the women.
