Stanek weekend Q: Response to charge that pro-life laws cost money to defend?

1-16-15-Abortion-State-Lawsuit-Spending-blog

Were pro-abortion groups not to sue to block almost every pro-life law passed in the land, there would be no legal expense in defending them.

But pro-abortion groups have brazenly turned their own taxpayer squanderage into an attack against pro-life legislation….

2015-02-07_0937

The obvious response is, “So stop suing.”

(Furthermore, since when did abortion groups become tightwads over spending taxpayer money?)

But pro-abortion journo Robin Marty calls such a comeback “ridiculous,” even while admitting this pro-abortion tactic that supposedly once worked no longer does:

Introducing unconstitutional abortion restrictions is becoming a regular occurrence for anti-abortion legislatures. Once upon a time, those bills could be stopped by pointing out exactly how much money would be wasted on the never ending legal challenges that the state would be forced to foot the bill for. Now, instead, abortion opponents are blaming abortion rights advocates for wasting taxpayer money because they don’t just let the bills go into effect.

What is your response to charges that passing pro-life legislation will hurt the government pocketbook?

The largest unreached people group: Where are the missionaries?

downloadWe don’t tend to think of the pre-born as an “unreached people group.” One reason is that definitions of “unreached peoples” were formulated at a time when many evangelicals were divided over when life begins and still held to what Al Mohler, president of the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, admits were “embarrassingly liberal positions on the abortion issue.”

Though consensus on when life begins has since changed thanks to better science and Bible study, missional models have not. We still don’t think of the pre-born as a class of people to target with the love of Jesus Christ. We don’t consider it within the scope of Christian missions to seek to save the lives of the pre-born so they can eventually hear the Gospel. We don’t see abortion-mindedness as a mission field or abolishing infanticide a goal of contemporary church outreach (though the historical record indicates it was a high moral priority for the early church).

Over the years we’ve successfully devised ways to reach people behind the iron curtain and the bamboo curtain, but when it comes to the cultural curtain, which says a woman can kill her unborn child if she chooses, we do next to nothing. We recruit, fund, train, and mobilize teams to carry the gospel to those separated from God by natural barriers such as language and geography, but for those separated from Him by moral vacuity, flawed logic, and unjust laws we make no comparable effort.

  • Bound4Life says pro-abortion bills are being passed and signed under the radar in Washington, D.C., which “could force all employers in the nation’s capital to cover abortion-on-demand in health plans, including pro-life groups and religious schools.” D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser (pictured far left) signed the bill, while outgoing mayor Vincent Gray (pictured far right) had refused to sign it, citing “serious constitutional concerns.”
  • Abstinence Clearinghouse says the National Center on Sexual Exploitation has a new 2015 Dirty Dozen list. Which organizations are on it?

This list highlights each of the top offenders and explains how they are currently contributing to sexual exploitation. Following the explanations is a list of actions that the public can take to persuade these companies to change their policies and practices. Among other, the list for 2015 includes… the book Fifty Shades of Grey for its glamorization of sexual violence.

  • Culture Campaign points to a new review that shows, contrary to previous “morally indefensible” claims, that Plan B does indeed cause abortions.
  • Live Action News also weighs in on the emergency contraceptives as abortifacients debate:

“Many doctors and researchers,” the authors elaborate, “claim that it has either no – or at most – an extremely small chance of working via abortion.” But “the latest scientific and medical evidence now demonstrates that levonorgestrel emergency contraception theoretically works via abortion quite often.”

GOP’s Abortion Barbie exploits pro-life millennials for photo op

2015-02-06_1223

On February 3, a group of Millennials with Students for Life of America paid a second visit to the Washington, D.C., office of Congresswoman Renee Ellmers.

Ellmers calls herself pro-life but infamously torpedoed a vote on the Pain Capable Unborn Child Protection Act two weeks ago, a bill that would protect babies 20 weeks and older from abortion.

I was with SFLA the first time its students visited Ellmers’ office on January 22. The student group has been particularly keen to speak with Ellmers, since one of her reasons for opposing a vote on the 20-week ban is that it might turn off young people. According to National Journal:

In a closed-door open-mic session of House Republicans, Rep. Renee Ellmers… [said] she believes the bill will cost the party support among millennials, according to several sources in the room.

“I have urged leadership to reconsider bringing it up next week.… We got into trouble last year, and I think we need to be careful again; we need to be smart about how we’re moving forward,” Ellmers said in an interview. “The first vote we take, or the second vote, or the fifth vote, shouldn’t be on an issue where we know that millennials—social issues just aren’t as important [to them].”

Had Ellmers bothered to attend the March for Life, she would have seen a throng of 500,000 pro-lifers comprised largely of Millennials. There’s also a Knights of Columbus poll, a National Journal poll specifically on a 20-week ban, and even research by the pro-abortion group NARAL - all corroborating Millennial opposition to abortion.

SFLA wanted to speak with Ellmers about her misunderstanding of Millennials and to express disappointment in her sabotage of the 20-week ban, as described here:

At her door, we were eventually greeted by a representative who directed us to a Legislative Assistant, Kristi Thompson.  She instructed us out into the hallway probably because our students would have crowded the office.  Our students patiently took turns sharing their concerns about the Pain Capable bill being delayed in January….

Kristi listened intently, thanking us for our comments.  After about 10 minutes of discussion we began to wrap things up when the Congresswoman herself approached her office.  It seemed she had just come in from outside since she was wearing her coat and carrying a coffee cup.  Congresswoman Ellmers appeared happy to see us and invited us to share our concerns again with her personally. However, when we tried to videotape our conversation, Kristi insisted we not use video, only photos.

As I wrote in a previous blog post, Ellmers apparently thought she was walking into a student photo up and got stuck.

unnamed (2)

So Ellmers turned around and created her own self-serving photo op.

Michele Hendrickson, Capital Area Regional Coordinator for SFLA, described the scene:

The staff person caught our students off guard and was like – hey, let’s pose for a photo! We did not ask for it. The students obviously didn’t realize what she was doing, and it didn’t feel like my place to tell them whether or not to get a picture with her. I felt pressured to be in the picture, but I politely excused myself from it.

As you can see in the Facebook post above, Congresswoman Ellmers was happy pose with some of the very Millennials she said don’t care about abortion, going so far as to exploit SFLA’s name for misleading political gain. As SFLA responded in a Facebook comment:

We weren’t there for a photo op. We wanted to ask Congresswoman Ellmers why she was using millennials as a scapegoat to note vote on the 20 week abortion ban.

The right thing for Ellmers to do is answer SFLA’s question, then see to it that the 20-week abortion ban gets a vote SOON, contacting all the people she lobbied to oppose it and tell them she was wrong.

Either that, or remove the photo, Congresswoman Ellmers.

Pro-life vid of day: Proud father raps to wheelchair-bound son

Jared Correiaby Kelli

A viral video showing Jayce Correia rapping for and about his son Jared, who has special-needs, is speaking volumes to many people on the value of human life. From People:

Jared Correia experienced a stroke while in the womb and consequently has spent his eight years of life living with a variety of debilitating medical conditions. He has cerebral palsy, hydrocephalus and epilepsy, which has left him without the ability to stand, walk, talk or see.

But he can hear, which is where his dad comes in….

Jared “might not be able to see, or comprehend much, but boy can he hear and feel a rhythm,” Jayce told the Huffington Post.

Correia continued: “Anyone who is part of a special needs family knows the struggles and the blessings that come with it. I know as a parent the frustrations that come with it. I want people to know that they are not alone. That those feelings of frustration are normal. We are only human. Life is not about how hard you can hit, it’s about how hard you can be hit and keep on going.”

VIDEO: Homeowner gone wild steals, destroys pro-life signs

uvs150206-003 2What is it about photos of abortion victims that enrages people so much?

On February 4, a homeowner gone wild attacked a team of Created Equal’s young pro-life activists who were demonstrating outside Beechcroft High School in Columbus, Ohio, as school was being dismissed.

Video of the incident shows the man, identified as Curtis Hall, crossing the street to berate Created Equal’s Josh Bertsch and Jami Beer (pictured with police officer below left and middle) before stealing and destroying their signs.

Hall shouted, “Get ’em out of here or I am going to break ’em.” He proceeded to knock signs over and take three, which he carried across the street and broke before throwing them in front of traffic.

Here’s video of the episode (WARNING: offensive language)…

Hall later told 10TV News “he is neither pro-life nor pro-choice – he just thinks the demonstration is inappropriate.”

But why would it be inappropriate to educate abortion-vulnerable high school students on the reality of abortion?

2015-02-06_1028Created Equal filed charges against Hall yesterday and demanded repayment of $120 for the broken signs.

This morning I spoke with Created Equal’s Executive Director, Mark Harrington, and Director of Training, Seth Drayer.

They indicated Hall wrote an email last night apologizing for his behavior.

It is Created Equal’s policy to drop charges if apologies are sincere, although it would still require financial restitution.

uvs150206-006 3

Hall’s sincerity will likely be put to the test today, because Created Equal has scheduled a return demonstration to Beechcroft High School.

Created Equal has six months to decide whether or not to proceed with charges.

Pro-aborts aren’t the only ones waging a “war on children”

muslim childby Carder

When Saint Pope John Paul II and his successor Francis speak relentlessly of a “culture of life,” many only hear the issue of abortion. But we are seeing through the barbarity of ISIS that a culture of life means much more. It is a linear promise that extends from arguments for life in the United States to moral barriers to the ISIS barbarity.

Some say that the actions of ISIS are in literal accord with the teachings of Islam. Others, including the last two presidents, aggressively disagree. I am no Islamic scholar, but if the teachings of Islam can support the barbarity against the innocent by ISIS in the slightest way, the world is in for a wicked future.

Measles outbreak draws attention to aborted fetal cells in vaccines

jenny-mccarthy-vaccines-the-view_69447_990x742The issue of childhood vaccinations provides a rare meeting place for liberals and conservatives.

There is no shortage of progressives like Robert Kennedy, Jr. who champion the anti-vaccination movement.

But there is also a contingent of conservatives who oppose it as well. As noted by Vox:

They are by no means guided by a singular ideology. They may be the vaccine-hesistant Amish, vaccine-refusing Christian Scientists, Jenny McCarthy acolytes, granola crunchers who don’t want to put “unnatural” things in their kids’ bodies, or simply worried parents who delay immunizing their children.

And there are also pro-lifers.

Until now pro-life opposition to vaccinations hasn’t gotten much airplay.

But the recent measles outbreak has drawn attention to the “anti-vaccine movement,” of which the pro-life contingent opposes those derived from aborted fetal cells. A February 4 Washington Post story belittles that argument while nonetheless corroborating it:

The Internet rumors that claim vaccinations mean having tiny pieces of aborted fetuses injected into your body are flat-out wrong, yet there is a grain of truth in the assertion that vaccinations and abortions are linked.

Many of the most common vaccines, for rubella and chicken pox for example, are grown in and then removed from cells descended from the cells of aborted fetuses.

Right to Life of Michigan provides a list of vaccines derived from aborted fetuses.

Objections by pro-lifers have historically been moral, although both Protestant and Catholic leaders have pronounced vaccinations permissible, as both RTLMI and WashPo point out.

But reading the “Top 10 Evil Human Experiments” jolts one back to the reality that the lure of health benefits for mankind can never excuse torturing and killing people. And murdered preborn babies obviously never gave permission to use their tissue for vaccinations.

On the other hand, is it moral to expose a pregnant mother to rubella, for instance, and risk either abortion or malformation of her baby by not vaccinating your child?

Obviously, the issue is complicated.

But now, another factor has been added to the mix: Autism.

trump5Autism has been a fear since 1998, when a now retracted study in The Lancet pointed to the mercury-based additive thimerosal in the Measles/Mumps/Rubella (MMR) vaccine.

That fear is repeatedly tamped down as unfounded, but the fact remains, according to webmd.com, that autism has spiked at “an alarming rate” from one of every 2,000 children in the 1970s and 80s to one of every 150 today.

Now, one research group believes the spike can be traced to the addition of aborted fetal cells into vaccines.

Quoting one of my previous blog posts on a study published in September 2014 in the Journal of Public Health:

The implicated vaccines are MMR (measles/mumps/rubella), Varicella (chickenpox), and Hepatitis A.

Using data from the U.S. government, United Kingdom, Denmark, and Western Australia, researchers found a spike in autism around the world after vaccines using animal cells were replaced by vaccines using aborted fetal cells:

Autistic disorder birth year change points were identified as 1980.9, 1988.4 and 1996 for the US, 1987 for the UK, 1990.4 for Western Australia, and 1987.5 for Denmark. Change points in these countries corresponded to introduction of or increased doses of human fetal cell line-manufactured vaccines….

This pattern was repeated in the US, UK, Western Australia and Denmark. Thus, rising autistic disorder prevalence is directly related to vaccines manufactured utilizing human fetal cells. Increased paternal age and DSM revisions were not related to rising autistic disorder prevalence.

Lead researcher Dr. Theresa Deisher noted something more alarming, “Not only are the human fetal contaminated vaccines associated with autistic disorder throughout the world, but also with epidemic childhood leukemia and lymphomas.”

Thanks to abortion, parents are being forced to pick their poison.
