Stanek Sunday funnies 6-24-12

Here were my top five favorite political cartoons for the week, beginning with two portraying how I hope the U.S. Supreme Court will decide on the Obamacare mandate, anticipated this week…

How dare Jill Stanek feature Greg Gutfeld’s latest Planned Parenthood joke!

I guess when you’ve got nothing to say, the old slut shaming is the best you can do…. I guess in Greg’s book, not all women are created equal, especially those who value their bodily autonomy. And btw, Gutfeld was given pride of place, for the last remark, on the blog run by anti-choice crazy […]

Need a hook-up? Check out Planned Parenthood clientele

What a great idea. As a young male student busy with classes, sports, and glee club, you just don’t have time to figure out who to date any more. The line at the clinic reduces confusion. Conversely, if you never see a female classmate there, you can assume she’s no fun at all, or worse, […]

The disastrous timing of Planned Parenthood’s anti-Romney ad campaign

Knowing Mitt Romney would secure the Republican nomination for president with a win in the Texas primary on May 29, Planned Parenthood planned the roll-out of its anti-Romney ad campaign for May 30.

Here is how ad campaigns like this are supposed to work:

  1. A special interest group makes a video
  2. The group makes a small ad buy
  3. The group makes a big PR splash
  4. The group hopes it will get lots of earned (free) media and that its video will go viral

Planned Parenthood’s #2 should read:

2. The group makes a small ad buy and lies and says it made a big ad buy

More on that later.

The problem for Planned Parenthood was it knew Live Action’s video exposé on sex selective abortions was coming but didn’t know when.

Any day would have been a bad day for Live Action to release its first video, but May 29 was the worst day possible.

  • Fox News has a piece on President Obama’s favorability decline among Catholics and women – a likely backfiring of the “war on women” rhetoric and attacks on religious freedom:

The Obama administration no doubt knew it would lose some support with Catholics in the mandate. But they surely did not anticipate the strong and unified voice with which Catholic leaders, in particular bishops, responded even after the administration offered a compromise widely rejected as an accounting gimmick….

As for whether the government should single out birth control to be mandated and cost-free when so many other drugs are not, again a clear majority of women — sixty-three percent — say “no.” After all, is your mother’s blood pressure medication or your child’s asthma medicine free by federal decree?

Stanek weekend question: What do you think of Time’s “Are you Mom enough?” cover photo?

The current issue of Time magazine features model Jamie Grumet nursing her 3-year-old son. The photo has obviously caused a stir. The range of reactions were boiled down in this Associated Press article:

All about “October Baby”

UPDATE 3/26, 10:45a: October Baby did very well at the box office this weekend. According to The Hollywood Gossip:

The anti-abortion drama October Baby opened in 390 theaters nationwide this weekend, earning the second-highest per-screen average behind The Hunger Games.
Samuel Goldwyn released the movie, starring Rachel Hendrix, John Schneider and Jasmine Guy, primarily in favorable political environments, earning $1.7M….

The movie’s overall gross is technically $1.9 million now….

In an effort to finance a wider release, filmmakers were able to raise $3 million from investors. To promote the film, its backers screened it for church groups and ran advertisements on networks such as Fox News.

While its niche may be relatively small, it is that dedicated, laser-targeted audience that helped make fellow faith-based fare Fireproof, starring Kirk Cameron, one of the most successful independent films of 2008, grossing $33.5 million.

According to Box Office Mojo, October Baby landed in the top 10 for the weekend, quite respectable.

UPDATE 3/26, 10:27a: I went to see October Baby Saturday night with a group of pro-life friends and was pleasantly surprised by a bonus feature that ran during film credits but was not in the cut I was sent to review.  Actress Shari Rigby spoke of her own abortion and the healing she had received.
