Charles Krauthammer debunks Rand Paul’s excuse to keep abortion legal

Rand Paul interview with David AxelrodLast week on The O’Reilly Factor Charles Krauthammer unintentionally debunked the frustrating statement made by pro-life Senator Rand Paul (pictured right) about abortion during his April 22 interview with David Axelrod. Paul said, quoting usnews.com:

On whether he’d sign a law restricting abortion rights:

“I think where the country is, is somewhere in the middle. We’re not changing any of the laws until the country is persuaded otherwise.”

It apparently doesn’t occur to people who think like Paul that unrestricted abortion was thrust upon this country in the first place when at least 2/3 of the states opposed it.

Krauthammer is pro-abortion, so I’m sure it never occurred to him that his thoughts about overturning segregation laws in the U.S. might also be applied to overturning abortion laws. Krauthammer said (beginning at 1:30 on the video):

But we decided as a society to step in and make it [segregation] illegal, not to wait for culture to reach a point of tolerance… to make it illegal. So that’s the country speaking to its own citizens and saying there’s a new norm, and, you’re going to have to act in a certain way. You may not want to serve somebody at your counter. You have to, or you’re going to be in trouble with the law.

And that over a generation or two is a teaching mechanism. And I think the country has done very well. The law influences the culture, and the culture influences the law. We have come an incredibly long way.

Pro-lifers do indeed have to work to shift culture, and we’ve come a long way in that regard.

But pro-life politicians who have the power to change law and don’t are simply cowards. They make do-nothing excuses such as Paul’s simply because they fear voter and media backlash.

Were pro-life politicians to take stronger steps to outlaw abortion, you can bet the public would amend its sexual behavior accordingly, as Krauthammer aptly pointed out with regard to segregation.

Sunday Word: “You deserve glory, honor, and power because you created everything”

Hands-Hearth-Baby-Feet-13003153-1024x837Our Lord and God, you deserve to receive glory, honor, and power because you created everything. Everything came into existence and was created because of your will.

~ Revelation 4:11, New International Version

[JLS note: Pointed out by Beth Moore in her Bible study on Revelation is something I’d never noticed: “God is to be worshipped above all because He is Creator.” If God’s highest achievement in this regard was creating beings in His own image, it stands to reason our highest achievement is likewise creating beings in our own image. The implications by this thought to abortion are a bit mind-blowing to me. It helps explain satan’s preoccupation and fierce protection of abortion and population control.]

Democrat congresswoman walks out of prayer gathering after Dobson calls Obama “abortion president”

Congressional Progressive Caucus

Rep. Janice Hahn just wanted to hear evangelist Billy Graham’s daughter speak at Thursday’s National Day of Prayer gathering on Capitol Hill, but she ended up storming out of the room before that portion of the program could get underway.

The California Democrat said she was appalled by the remarks of Dr. James Dobson, saying she felt he went against the event’s stated nonpartisan and apolitical intent by bashing Barack Obama and calling him the “abortion president.”

Stanek weekend question: What would you say to an abortionist?

Leroy-CarhartOn April 22, Brendan O’Morchoe of Students for Life of America wrote at LifeSiteNews.com about his experience of finding himself on the same plane as late-term abortionist LeRoy Carhart:

Last Saturday, I was boarding a flight coming home to Virginia from Omaha, Nebraska…. It is the moments like what happened on my flight Saturday night, confronted by evil, that keep me going.

When I sat down and looked across the aisle, I saw none other than notorious late-term abortionist LeRoy Carhart, on his way to kill late-term babies at his facility in Germantown, Maryland. I was face-to-face with a man who has killed thousands upon thousands of babies with his own hands, who is responsible for the deaths of at least two women and who has so callously defended his business. And I had no idea what to do.

What do you really say to someone like that? How can you reach him?

I wasn’t sitting close enough to have a conversation with him (the aisle and a woman I assumed to be his wife were between us, but we were in the same row) and felt he would shut me down right away anyway. I knew I couldn’t sit that close to a man who represented so much evil. My entire body was shaking uncontrollably.

So, I asked to be moved up a couple rows where I couldn’t see him, but he could still hear me and I prayed out loud for his conversion and an end to abortion for the next two hours. When we landed, I waited for him to walk past and called his name. He looked me right in the eye and I said, “LeRoy, we’re all praying for you.” He mumbled something incomprehensible and stalked off, but I knew I had got to him.

I have had two similar experiences of being thisclose to Carhart, once at a press conference and once in an airport. Neither time did I speak to him.

At the press conference I was more conflicted about the possibility of his somehow reaching out to shake my hand and thinking I couldn’t do it. WWJD? I had no idea what to say to him.

At the airport Carhart passed by me so quickly I didn’t have time to think. Replaying the event in my mind, I’ve always, perhaps oddly, thought the thing to do would have been to point my finger at him and yell, “LeRoy Carhart, late-term abortionist!” which almost seems funny when I type it. My viewpoint was no justice, no peace – nowhere.

I wrote on the blog about sitting next to then-Planned Parenthood of Illinois CEO Steve Trombley on a flight from Chicago to Dallas, where my attempts to converse fell flat.

crichards1A close friend of mine in the movement told me of recently fetching a cab at Washington Reagan Airport only to look up once inside to see Planned Parenthood CEO Cecile Richards also waiting for a cab five feet away.

The moment passed quickly for my friend as well. She has replayed it in her mind and wondered if she should have rolled down her window and said something to Richards. Richards would have recognized her. And then, my friend wonders, what should she have said?

(My friend’s takeaway was noting Richards hard at work texting on her iPhone even while waiting for her cab. My friend gained new resolve to never waste a moment either.)

So, what would you say to an abortionist if happening upon one? Or perhaps you’ve spoken to an abortionist? I know sidewalk counselors do all the time.

  • Live Action documents another first person story of how Planned Parenthood was complicit in covering up the sexual abuse of a minor. Their callous disregard for abused children is appalling:

Over the years, I have found out that my story is very common in two aspects, neither of which will be good news for either side in the abortion debate. The first is the fact that my experience with Planned Parenthood was not an aberration. The sexual attitude often championed by Planned Parenthood is a serious factor in preventing the discovery of sexual abuse of young people. Had anyone shown even the least bit of disapproval or concern, I would have divulged the truth and begged for help.

  • Fletcher Armstrong doesn’t mind controversy when it makes people think, and the college campus-targeted Genocide Awareness Project serves that purpose. The GAP recently visited Michigan State University where they received various responses to their visit. One counter-protest group had some responses strange reasoning, like, “Everyone is entitled to their point of view, but it’s about respecting the student body, those who may or may not have mental illnesses…. The visitors that we have may be looking at the school for prospective college.” But then another anonymous comment made it all worthwhile (pictured left).
  • Big Blue Wave posts her response to a column asking the question, “Why do more women oppose abortion than men?”
  • Right to Life of Michigan says the state’s Democratic Party has released a video promoting Democrat Gary Peters for U.S. Senate, which includes a statement of support from late-term abortion clinic owner Renee Chelian:

At the start of the video the woman… says, “I’m Renee” and later says, “Choosing Gary Peters means protecting my daughters’ and your daughters’ future.”…

While Renee Chelian thinks electing Gary Peters means protecting “your daughters’ future,” Chelian doesn’t believe in protecting all daughters. Every year, thousands of unborn Michigan daughters are killed at her abortion clinics in Michigan and she and her family profit off of it.

  • Clinic Quotes notes the twisted thinking of anti-adoption abortion supporters, who consider adoption (not abortion) cruel.

  • Culture Campaign reports that Google has essentially decided to contribute to the murder of the preborn for disallowing anyone searching for abortion clinics from seeings ads or links to pro-life pregnancy resource centers. Apparently, they don’t follow this line of thinking with other topics. For instance, I searched for “suicide” the first links that popped up were for suicide prevention. In searching for “abortion”, the top links were all favorable to abortion.
  • At Life Issues Institute, Bradley Mattes addresses the volatile topic of pregnancy resulting from rape, pointing to studies that show how stress affects fertility:

Although no study specifically addresses rape and fertility, there are several that confirm there is a relationship between stress and infertility. Ironically, two of these studies were published in the New York Times. One measured the levels of the enzyme alpha-amylase, a biological indicator of stress, and found that women with higher levels took longer to become pregnant. Dr. Sarah Berga, head of obstetrics and gynecology at Emory University, stated, “The surprising finding was that even low levels of stress can have an impact on conception.” Dr. Alice D. Domar is the director of mind-body services at a Boston fertility center. She affirms the link between stress and infertility, “If you’re really stressed out and depressed, the body seems to sense that’s not a good time to get pregnant.” A study from Emory University School of Medicine researched the impact of stress on ovulation and concluded, “Stress is one of the most common and most commonly underappreciated causes of infertility and reproductive compromise in men and women.

  • A Culture of Life says that New Zealand plans to destroy a large number of frozen embryos on November 22 this year:

That’s the first deadline of the 2004 HART (Human Assisted Reproductive Technology) act. All embryos in New Zealand that have been frozen for 10 years or more will be destroyed on that date, unless their parents obtain specific permission by May this year. That permission to extend frozen storage must be granted from an ethics committee, not the facility storing the embryos. One chain of fertility clinics says 350 couples or women will be affected at this deadline. And with over 10,000 embryos in storage in New Zealand, it’s only the start of this issue.

  • Down on the Pharm discusses the selective use of privacy laws in California:

While pondering why California’s privacy laws protect law-breaking abortion clinics and domestic abusers, but not doddering old men arguing with mistresses, click this link, and read Ben Shapiro’s report on what activities will NOT produce a permanent ban in the NBA. Perhaps it will make you reconsider whether professional basketball is your kind of entertainment.
