- Here’s another bite out of the “pro-lifers don’t care about the born” meme. Belmont Abbey College is building a 10,000 square foot maternity center and residential facility for single mothers:
Putting the new maternity home on the campus of a Catholic school is a “bold move,” said Belmont Abbey College President Bill Thierfelder.
He described the project as “a natural extension of pro-life philosophy.”
“It’s putting your money where your mouth is,” Thierfelder said. “You’re not just talking philosophy anymore. This is something real. You need to meet people where they are and help them to take the next good step.”
Women who stay at the home up to 2 years for free don’t have to be Catholic or students at Belmont Abbey. They can commute to colleges or universities in the greater Charlotte area or take transferable credits at the Abbey. As they complete their educations, they’ll also learn to be good parents. Room, board and meals will be provided at the home.
- Marjorie Dannenfelser (pictured left) responds to Mitt Romney’s “Pro-life Pledge”:
However, there remains a very crucial point of disagreement. It is troubling that the governor does not agree to select only pro-life appointees for relevant cabinet and executive-branch positions, in particular the heads of the National Institutes of Health, the Department of Justice, and the Department of Health & Human Services. Truly, personnel is policy.
Any attorney general in charge of vetting judges and defending pro-life legislation must have conviction and background on the issue to do it well. That is especially true on a deeply moral issue such as abortion. The convictions of the person holding the position are critical to the advancement of the policy goal. To hold a position opposite to the president on the abortion issue would put such a person in an undermining position, especially given the level of leadership Gov. Romney has committed to provide. It is counter-intuitive to recruit a half-hearted lieutenant to assist in a battle of such consequence.
- Apparently, all those donations to Planned Parenthood Indiana will dry up today. Note the quote below on PP’s thinking as to why they won’t restructure so their non-aborting clinics could get funding:Elsewhere, organizations facing public funding cuts have essentially split into one branch that handles women’s health and another that handles abortions, but receives no public money. PP of IN president Betty Cockrum rejects that proposal.
“There’s a very legitimate concern about the shelf life of any kind of restructuring. Just looking at language that was introduced in the Minnesota legislature this year that would have stripped funds from any organization that even made a referral for an abortion,” she says.

He described the project as “a natural extension of pro-life philosophy.”

Amen to that!! Helping women before, during and after their babies are born is what we do.
Keep on lying, proaborts.

Meanwhile, anti-aborts Republicans want to cut funding for WIC which helps mothers of post-born babies.
How very Pro-life!
That goes both ways CC.
And where are all the pro-choicers to help all the women who CHOOSE to have their children. Where are all the pro-choice maternity homes, day cares, pro-choice docs providing free exams for prego moms? Where are all the pro-choicers when scared girls are forced into abortion clinics by angry parents or boyfriends who don’t want to abort?
How very pro-choice.
Once again CC, NOT EVERYONE HERE IS A REPUBLICAN!!!
Kris-
It’s called Medicaid. WIC. Early Head Start. Nurse Family Partnership. Domestic Violence Shelters. Funded our tax dollars, that this pro-choicer is happy to pay, because it goes to providing for women who CHOOSE to parent. And best of all- these services are available to all women who are in need of them, regardless of their religious affiliation or non-affiliation. Try finding a secular “Crisis Pregnancy Center” or pro-life maternity center that doesn’t have a religious orientation. Although the Republican party seems downright gleeful at the thought of gutting these services for poor women. Not particularly pro-life, that.
melvina-all the things u mentioned Medicaid, wic, head start, etc. Those are governement funded aids for women who choose to have their babies, not specifically pro-choice ones. You proved my point.
But Kris- since all of those agencies exist- why do there need to be explicitly “pro-choice” centers? There are definitely resources out there for pregnant women who want to continue their pregnancies. If I support those agencies with my tax dollars, and support politicians who are going to support those agencies in Congress- why does the pro-choice community need to go out and replicate the exact same services when WIC/Medicaid/Head Start already do them (and without offering a ration of guilt the way an anti-abortion center might?)
Melvina,
Because, quite frankly, government programs are usually far less helpful, more inefficient than private organizations.
Melvina: Why is it pro-choice-to-dismember-unborn-children people want everyone to be forced to fund things through taxes, and are proud about paying taxes, but won’t give a dime more to causes they believe in? Is force the only way to fund social programs? It’s us who are giving our money that we keep to causes we believe in. We aren’t forced to do it, but we are still helping moms and babies. If PP is defunded, will you still be donating? There are nonreligious CPCs–do you donate to one?
