Pro-life news brief 10-16-14

by JivinJ, host of the blog, JivinJehoshaphat

  • The New York Times covers Planned Parenthood’s continuing attempts to corner the market on abortion. They’re building a $9 million facility in Queens:

While there are other women’s health centers in Queens that offer abortions, the absence of a Planned Parenthood was “something that had to be corrected,” Councilman Jimmy Van Bramer, Democrat of Queens, said.

  • Katha Pollitt is out and about promoting her new book on abortion. The latest is this Huffington Post column excerpted from her book where she claims, “We need to see abortion as an urgent practical decision that is just as moral as the decision to have a child — indeed, sometimes more moral” and “Actually, abortion is part of being a mother and of caring for children….”
  • Alabama Women’s Center for Reproductive Alternatives abortion clinic is re-opening at a new location after the old clinic couldn’t meet standards set forth in Alabama’s Women’s Health and Safety Act of 2013. If you watch the video of the newscast you can see a sign on a door which reads, “NO CHILDREN ALLOWED IN THE BUILDING!!!”

Pro-life vid of day: Created Equal jumbotron comes to Philly

by Hans Johnson

At the 2013 March for Life, Created Equal displayed a jumbotron video, which opened with the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. quoting the famous preamble of the Declaration of Independence concerning life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Following his remarks, the video featured the graphically  horrifying results of abortion. This Friday, the group will bring the 10X12 ft. jumbotron to the place where those famous words were first proclaimed to the American people.

Executive Director Mark Harrington said of the campaign:

It seems fitting to me that we are launching this campaign in the very place where our nation’s founders penned those words, created equal. We are still battling for equal rights. In this case, it is the pre-born who are being discriminated against.

Independence Mall is one of the top tourist attractions in the nation, with thousands visiting Independence Hall and the Liberty Bell every day. Once again there is debate about children seeing the disturbing images.  Harrington says efforts will be made to warn parents about the display area. “This, unfortunately, is what happens when a nation kills its children. We believe those victims need to be shown publicly. I’m happy to stop doing this when the killing stops.”

Woman finds out at six months she’s pregnant with rare twins

twinsby Kelli

I had really sharp pain in my left side and went into the doctor, and they said we think you might be pregnant. They told me I was six months and told me to get down to the ER. They did an ultrasound and told me it was twins….

They’re both just little miracles [and] they’re so cute[;] it could have been so many things that went wrong that didn’t.

~ Shelby Magnani, an Iowa woman who went six months without knowing she was pregnant with monoamniotic twins (who share one placenta and one amniotic sac) Anna and Ava, as quoted by Global News, October 14

Pro-life vid of the day: The Prayer Vigil Challenge

by Hans Johnson

Since the Supreme Court ruled against the Massachusetts Buffer Zone law last June, students from the Immaculate Heart of Mary School of Still River have issued a Prayer Vigil Challenge to neighboring schools. Says Joseph Duffy, who is president of the school’s John the Baptist Pro-Life League: “Our aim is simple: to close the killing center of Worcester Planned Parenthood – through peaceful witness and public prayer.”

Country singer Gretchen Peters worried about pro-life legislation

Gretchen Petersby Carder

What scares me about what is happening in the mid-terms in Tennessee is that the amendment that’s on the ballot would actually not provide for abortion in the case of rape or the potential death of the mother. That is extreme….

I got some really quite ugly hate mail, but to me country music has been about adults and real life and the problems they face and I have a responsibility to stand up for the issues I believe in.

Pro-life blog buzz 10-14-14

  • American Life League’s Judie Brown contrasts the indifference toward the slaughter of 3,000 humans daily by abortion in America to the outcry over the euthanasia of an Ebola patient’s dog in Spain. Brown is a dog lover, but even she was shocked at the huge response to save the life of one animal:

Here is the first sentence of a news report that came to my attention recently: “With more than 3,400 people dead in west Africa and 7,500 infected in the latest Ebola outbreak, 300,000 people sign a petition demanding action… to save an infected dog.” This was twice as many people as those who signed a petition demanding a cure be found for the deadly virus….

As it turns out, the dog was “put down” Wednesday by Madrid’s regional government. But the fact of the matter is that the plight of this one pet generated more interest and involvement than a single preborn child threatened and then killed by the act of abortion.

There is something dramatically wrong with this picture.

Dairy-cow

  • Big Blue Wave shares another example of valuing animals more than humans: New Zealand’s former Green MP Sue Kedgley has declared dairy cow abortion “inhumane and cruel” while she and the NZ Green Party support the abortion of humans. What makes killing preborn cows “inhumane and cruel” while killing preborn humans is seen as a sacred right?
  • Down on the Pharm posts another story to be filed under, “You Can’t Make This Stuff Up” – Jonathan Dach, one of the White House volunteers who assisted with President Obama’s trip to Cartagena, Colombia, and a son of a big Obama donor, kept a prostitute in his hotel room there. While Dach used to work with Michelle Obama on her “Let’s Move” campaign, he now has been assigned a new job at the State Department’s Office on Global Women’s Issues, “which focuses on such things as prostitution and human trafficking….

    The fox guarding the hens.”

  • At Life Training Institute, Clinton Wilcox responds to “the irrationality of the pro-choice mindset” in a woman’s open letter to the child she plans to abort:

Abortion is often touted as a “religious issue,” but the religious underpinnings of the pro-choice mindset are often ignored. In this letter, she acknowledges that this is a child, yet she seems to believe in a form of reincarnation, that the child she kills now will come around again when she’s ready to be a mother, and this time she’ll keep the child….

If this letter had been written by a parent wanting to kill her toddler, this would not be seen as “heartbreaking.” This would be seen as appalling, and rightly so. Yet because this is an unborn child, and pro-choice people tend to have a subtle reincarnation mindset, it’s not seen as appalling because she can just try again when she’s ready and this same child will come around again. This does not correspond to reality, but I can see how it would help some people sleep better at night.

She also claims that she wants her child to be happy. I hear this a lot from pro-choice advocates, and it seems a good way to justify this act of abortion. But this claim seems a little hollow when you understand that the choice is between giving your child life, or killing your child in abortion. How does your fear that you won’t be able to give your child a good life justify killing the child through a gruesome procedure like abortion (or at all)? You can’t claim you love your child and subsequently claim that killing her is the best thing for her.

  • Clinic Quotes shares a statement from Norma McCorvey (“Roe” of Roe vs. Wade; pictured right), once an abortion clinic worker but now a pro-life convert, who says the only way she and her fellow clinic workers coped with their jobs was to use drugs:

A-Z… [the abortion clinic that Norma McCorvey worked at first, eventually shut down] drugs became a major tool to keep the peace. Drugs got us through the day, and when memories kept us awake, drugs helped us get to sleep. When we couldn’t bear the thought of going back for another day’s worth of work, drugs got us out of bed.

We even used drugs with patients. Many times a young woman might say, “I’m not so sure I want to do this.”

If the patient was holding things up, we knew just what to do. “Here, honey,” we’d say, offering some cocaine. “Have a little hit of this. You’ll be fine.”

Our offer was not always accepted, but when it was, it worked wonders.”

Pro-life daily vid: Planned Parenthood “noble and just,” says heckler

PPPteardropsm

by Hans Johnson

A poll done for Students for Life of America showed that 59% of 18-24-olds didn’t know that Planned Parenthood performed abortions. And since 79% of their facilities are within five miles of a college campus, the pro-life group decided to launch the Planned Parenthood Project to inform this young targeted group. Besides photo displays, the group uses 915 small pink crosses to represent the number of babies killed each day in PP’s facilities.

In three of a series of four YouTube videos shot at the University of Wisconsin-Platteville, an exchange with one pro-choice supporter went from rote argument to entertainingly bizarre. Calling PP “a noble and just organization” as he paced back and forth, he went on to exclaim: “Abort it all you want! I don’t care!” and “Abort away, as far as I’m concerned!” But you have to wonder how much careful thought he has put into this when he invokes the Norse god of mischief (here, in this additional video), declaring, “I am Loki!”  One wishes his “brother” Thor would give him a serious talking-to.

Be sure to turn on closed-captioning.

Jennifer Lawrence and the objectification of women

jennifer-lawrenceby Kelli

By insinuating that women ought to “pay up” and provide naked photos of themselves to whatever man they’re in a relationship with at the moment, [actress Jennifer] Lawrence objectifies women. She degrades them as little more than sex objects, designed to satisfy the appetites of men.

I can’t even express how wrong this is. No, young woman, it is not your duty to take and share naked photos of yourself with your boyfriend. If you believe he’s either going to look at you or find other naked women, find a different man.

You deserve better.

There are men out there who actually respect women and their bodies. They would never expect their woman to text naked photos of herself. Objectifying – and all too often humiliating – yourself in this way is not what a good, respectful man expects….

Unfortunately, it’s these kind of objectifying attitudes that wage a real War on Women in our nation. When women feel like objects and things that men can own, it sadly follows that they view their own children as objects and things that they can freely discard.

~ Kristi Burton Brown, responding to actress Jennifer Lawrence’s claim that “either your boyfriend is going to look at porn or he’s going to look at you,” Live Action News, October 9
