On March 22 North Dakota became the first state to legislatively authorize a ballot initiative that would establish the right to life from the moment of conception.

On March 26 North Dakota Governor Jack Dalrymple signed three other major pro-life bills into law. According to the Bismarck Tribune:

Left-liberalism seeks to present the Irish position on abortion as obscurantist for reasons relating to blind obedience to the Catholic Church. But this fails fundamentally to understand either religion or abhorrence of abortion. Catholics are people who understand reality in a particular way, not people who have been given a list of things they must believe in.

The Catholic position on abortion arises from a moral perspective centred on the dignity of the human person. Catholicism is the expression of this perspective, not its motivation. A majority of Irish people continues to hold to a principled opposition to abortion, and would almost certainly do so even if the Catholic Church withdrew its objections, which is unlikely….

I had never heard of the Al Smith Memorial Foundation Dinner before the flak that arose over President Obama being invited this year.

According to Wiki the event is “is an annual white tie charity fundraiser for [local] Catholic charities, held at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel in New York on the third Thursday of October… in honor of former NY Governor Al Smith, the first Catholic presidential candidate. The first dinner was in 1945, the year after Al Smith’s death.”

Last night’s event raised $5 million.

Wiki goes on to explain the Al Smith Dinner’s foray into presidential abortion politics:

St. Cajetans Church, a Spanish Colonial structure built in 1925, is now owned and a part of the Auraria college campus in Denver.

• Culture Campaign reports on a new study from Yale University and City University of New York, which “shows that if the Republican Party abortion platform came to fruition and states could outlaw abortion, not only would the national abortion rate drop, but the rate among non-white Americans would drop the most.”

  Some point to this and claim racism on the part of Republicans… but really, doesn’t this just prove the pro-life point that abortion is used as a eugenic weapon and disproportionately takes the lives of minorities?

• Big Blue Wave reprints an essay on abortion entitled, “The Cause of Life Can’t be Severed from the Cause of Freedom,” written by WI Rep. Paul Ryan, Mitt Romney’s pick for Republican VP candidate.

  Pro-lifers, we need to get busy supporting this ticket.

• Kelly Clinger discusses a recent viral photo (pictured left) of a woman waiting to abort her 20-week twin girls (because she wanted boys) at the Orlando Women’s Center. The photo has received mixed reactions – mostly disbelief and horror that procedures like it are legal and occurring every day here in America. Perhaps this horror is a starting point to help people understand that early abortion is no different – it’s just a matter of size.
• Father Frank Pavone discusses the reasons why he believes the Catholic Church’s invitation to President Obama to attend the Al Smith Dinner in October is “not appropriate at this time.”
