Pro-choice singer activist finds common ground with pro-life counterparts

by Carder

pro-choice Michelle Shocked finds common ground with pro-life counterpartsLet me tell you a story.

I was vagabonding, just released from an arrest in Dallas in 1984, at the Republican National Convention. I was making my way out of that protest toward New York City, and I made a detour to Madison, Wisconsin.

On the campus there, I saw older women protesting something, and there was a circle of students around them. When I got closer I saw coat hangers on the ground. I recognized that these older women were protesting against abortion. So I went up to one of the older women and I asked her, “What is it about this issue that makes you so passionate that you could come out on the streets to protest? Protesting is supposed to be my job.”

The woman’s response was very simple. She said, “because I believe abortion is murder.”

A light bulb turned on over my head, because I realized we had more in common than we had differences. I told her, “The next time you see me fighting against this war, this police action, this invasion, this occupation, if you ask me the same question, I’ll tell you because I believe war is murder.” I realized we have to find common ground. I have to respect her sanctity of life, and she has to respect mine.

To me, that is radical.

Unanimous! Supreme Court strikes down MA buffer zone law

Jill Stanek prays outside Supreme Court before buffer zone abortion clinic decision; pro-lifeRead the background for this case here.

Today, in a unanimous ruling, the U.S. Supreme Court struck down Massachusetts’ buffer zone law, which banned pro-life advocates from entering a 35-foot restricted-speech zone around the entrance of abortion clinics. Read the decision here. Details, from USA Today:

The decision united Chief Justice John Roberts and the court’s four liberals, who said the distance improperly removed demonstrators from public sidewalks and spaces. The other conservative justices would have issued a more sweeping verdict, striking down the ban on grounds that it targets abortion opponents’ specific point of view….

Although the court had upheld an 8-foot buffer zone in Colorado in 2000, the Massachusetts law passed in 2007 went 27 feet farther.

The Colorado case was Hill v Colorado, wherein by a 6-3 decision SCOTUS ruled that zone constitutional (six were: Breyer, Ginsburg, O’Connor, Rehnquist, Stevens, Souter; three were Kennedy, Scalia, Thomas).

About that Hill decision, per Scotusblog.com:

Scalia says in his concurring opinion that Hill should be overruled….

The S. Ct. majority says nothing about its prior buffer zone ruling in Hill, the validity of which now seems in real question….

[T]here would seem to be a real question whether Hill would come out the same way after this….

Other pro-abortion buffer zone dominoes to fall?

That domino indeed may fall, along with others. Justice Roberts stated in his opinion (page 23) that five localities may be immediately impacted. Those might be, quoting from the New York brief:

As with the Mass state law, the law of Burlington, which is also fixed and 35 feet is probably unconstitutional; Portland ME (39 ft), likely unconstitutional; San Francisco has 25 feet, likely unconstitutional; Pittsburgh has 15 feet, possibly unconstitutional, and Santa Barbara has 8 foot, possibly unconstitutional.

Massachusetts abortion clinic buffer zone law struck down; targeted pro-life proponentsThere is also the  Chicago 8-foot buffer zone law and a new New Hampshire 25-foot buffer zone law scheduled to take effected within 30 days.

Thursday’s ruling opens the door to multiple pro-life challenges.

Abortion access remains ensured

The decision does allow wiggle room. Quoting Scotusblog.com again:

The abortion protests ruling is relatively narrow. The Court makes clear that states can pass laws that specifically ensure access to clinics. It holds that states cannot more broadly prohibit speech on public streets and sidewalks….

[A] state has to more narrowly target clinic obstructions. For example, the police can tell protesters to move aside to let a woman through to the clinic. But it cannot prohibit protesters from being on the sidewalks in the first instance. If in practice protesters still are obstructing the entrance, then it can consider a broader restriction….

[T]he Court seemingly leaves no room for a law requiring as a general matter buffer zones of any size around the clinics — it lists all manner of alternatives, including court orders tailored to a specific clinic’s problems, that will be a more narrowly tailored way of responding to the State’s legitimate concerns.

Pro-life vid of day: Abortion is not just a women’s issue

logo

by Hans Johnson

Online For Life was founded by businessmen on a voluntary basis – men who believe that abortion is not merely a “women’s issue” – to help pregnant mothers searching online to find sources for hope and help – not the dead end of an abortion clinic.

Brian Fisher, former CEO of Coral Ridge Ministries,  explained the intent of the organization:

I thought if we could basically go to where the women who are hurting are, which is online — there’s 2 million internet searches a month for abortion terms in the United States  —  it would have a huge impact. So that’s where the mission field is, if you will. Then if we could go and bring them into an environment that was caring and compassionate, and that there was a support network there where they could legitimately feel security which most of them don’t feel, then we had a shot at saving children.

By referring women to pro-life clinics, Fisher told TheBlaze, almost 2,000 babies have been saved, and “we have a call center that talks to the women, and we’re actually opening up our own clinics this year, and we’ll be operating two clinics: one in Texas and one in Pennsylvania.”

Author: Black fathers in home are crucial to black progress

rileyby Kelli

… [B]lack political gains are not the panacea that the black left has claimed they would be. When you look at income, unemployment, poverty, incarceration rates and other metrics, wide black-white disparities persist notwithstanding the ever-growing number of black elected officials.

The reality is that a black man in the home is much more important to black progress than a black man in the White House.

Pro-life vid of day: Formerly conjoined twins are valedictorians

Copeland_twins_2_AP

by Hans Johnson

When Emily and Caitlin Copeland were found to be conjoined twins over 18 years ago, it was a grim prognosis for their mother Crystal. They were born joined at the chest sharing a liver, and their organs were discharging through only one of them. So their surgeon Dr. Kevin Lally decided to wait for them to grow and get stronger before separating them.

He did so when they were ten months old, and after a rocky start they grew up healthy and have just graduated as co-valedictorians from Houston’s Lutheran High North.

Media ignores pro-life ire over Komen-Planned Parenthood bond

Komen donations down after Planned Parenthood reconnect, thanks to pro-life supportersYet another mainstream media outlet is crediting – or blaming, depending on one’s viewpoint – abortion supporters for the fundraising woes Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure has experienced in the aftermath of its realliance with Planned Parenthood, while ignoring any ire pro-life proponents may be demonstrating with their closed wallets.

From TribLive.com, June 23, which also perpetuates another falsehood:

The Komen Pittsburgh chapter raised more than $2.4 million in fiscal 2013, compared with nearly $3 million the prior year….

Affiliates across the country reported similar declines. The national group raised about $78 million less in gifts, sponsorships and race entry fees in 2013 than it did in 2012….

The national organization upset many donors by cutting off funding to Planned Parenthood, which performs mammograms, because of its involvement with abortion.

For undoubtedly not the last time, Planned Parenthood does not perform mammograms.

A Planned Parenthood zealot scorned…

On the topic of Komen’s drop in donations, prevailing liberal mainstream media wisdom has been that abortion proponents carry grudges a long, long time – forever maybe – which explains the decline.

Kormen Planned Parenthood Unsplit, angering pro-life movementSo, the thinking goes, even after Komen sought to pacify abortion zealots by lifting its mere 3-day funding moratorium against Planned Parenthood, an organization that does nothing to stop breast cancer other than give the same breast exams women give themselves in the shower, the betrayal was fait accompli. Spiteful people, pro-choicers are.

This is the explanation that makes sense to the liberal media. It suits their agenda. Don’t mess with Planned Parenthood or abortion zealots.

Pro-life movement apparently blind to Komen-Planned Parenthood link?

It has apparently never occurred to them that pro-lifers might actually be the force behind the donation drop. This actually makes more sense and is more likely, since pro-lifers are the ones Komen ended up double-crossing.

There is no abortion organization pro-lifers detest more than Planned Parenthood, the United States’ largest abortion provider. Everyone knows it. We do not want one red pro-life cent to go to Planned Parenthood, even if through another source. The government almost ground to a halt over this fact. (Plus conservatives are more generous than liberals.) From The New Yorker, 2011:

The campaign against Planned Parenthood has been unrelenting….

“We would wake up and, every day, it would be about something else,” [Planned Parenthood CEO Cecile] Richards said. “Some days it was about abortion. Some days it was about race. Some days it was about me. Some days it was about kids.”

That was 2011. Things haven’t changed. Komen can try to woo abortion supporters back all they want. They’re wooing the wrong funding source. And the right funding source will never come back as long as Komen subsidizes its poisonous partner, Planned Parenthood.

Embattled pro-life prosecutor still speaks out against abortion

Phill Kline speaks out against abortionby Carder

The law flies out the window when abortion comes in the door. Without truth, there is no law, and that truth must resonate in the hearts of the people…

If you put your convictions on the line in America, you can expect to be persecuted. The word ‘suffering’ in the ancient Hebrew means to lift up to a higher purpose. If you reflect on life and on history – you will see that all that has eternal value has required suffering. We must rely on the promises of God.

We often can’t see how God is using us in our pro-life ministry. Yet we have faith in the author of truth.

~ Former Kansas Attorney General and pro-life prosecutor Phill Kline, who continues to speak out against abortion despite numerous attempts to silence him, Live Action, June 21

  • Clinic Quotes shares a quote from an abortionist who admits he does “mental gymnastics” in order to perform abortions:

… I started doing abortions on an altruistic basis. I’ve done a couple thousand, and it turned into a significant financial boon, but I also feel I’ve provided an important service. The only way I can do an abortion is to consider only the woman as my patient and block out the baby. I’ve delivered enough babies, seen enough divorces, and seen enough abused kids to do abortions with a clear conscience. This may be some kind of mental gymnastics on my part, but I really feel that parenthood is so tough that people shouldn’t back into it.

  • ProLifeBlogs.com links to a Life News report regarding a decision by the Presbyterian Church (USA) to refuse to condemn the killing of babies born alive following botched abortions:

… 78 percent of the PCUSA General Assembly struck down a resolution condemning the killing of babies born alive during abortions, as occurred with notorious abortionist Kermit Gosnell. Initiated by the South Alabama presbytery, it called for inclusion of pro-life Presbyterians and an investigation into doctrinal and financial support of abortion. Dissenters cited pro-abortion stances, while others noted past affirmation of viable babies and reservations in commenting on criminal cases.

In other words, PCUSA sees no problem with what abortionists like Gosnell do for a living. It appears that gay marriage (which was approved by the assembly) matters to PCUSA, while the right to life itself doesn’t matter at all. (Maybe the “PC” in PCUSA should really stand for “politically correct”.)

  • A Culture of Life finds both good and bad news in the latest abortion statistics out of New Zealand:
The recorded abortions have dropped for the sixth consecutive year to 14,073. This is the lowest since 2007 when there were 18,382 abortions reported….

Significantly, younger women are leading the way in the rejection of abortion. Since 2007, when the number of teen abortions reached their highest in history, the number of 15 to 19 year olds having abortions has decreased by half!…

Unfortunately women aged 40 to 44 are having more abortions. 637 – up from 590 in 2012. It is the highest number of abortions in this age bracket since 2010 when 655 were recorded.

  • Minnesota Citizens Concerned for Life has an excellent article pointing out the importance of fathers regarding the abortion issue. Abortion is NOT just a women’s issue.

  • At Live Action, Cassy Fiano reports on some “Nazi thinking” comments made by a Czech government advisor who was forced to resign due to public outcry. But would the outcry have been so swift had his verbiage been a bit more… nuanced?

Miroslav Mitloehner drew strong protests after he argued in a recent article published in the Journal of Medical Law and Bioethics that “it makes no sense to prolong the life of a baby born as a monster….

Mitloehner said doctors should be allowed to terminate babies’ lives without parents’ consent, adding that their disabilities led to the question “whether such a freak is a human being at all.”

Mitloehner said society should have the courage to agree to “legally end their life in the course of pregnancy or immediately after the birth.”

  • At National Review, Michael J. New points out the media’s pro-abortion bias and how it does a disservice to women by neglecting to report the connection between abortion and preterm birth:

… [E]ven though the Bloomberg article reports extensively on both high abortion rates and the high rate of preterm births in the same story, it never bothers to draw a connection between the two. This is despite the fact that there exist 127 studies documenting such a link. These studies date back until 1963 and include a wide range of methodological approaches. They also include recent, methodologically rich studies from Italy and China, each of which analyzed thousands of women; as well as a 2009 meta-study of the literature from 1995 to 2007 authored by both pro-life and pro-choice researchers, which found a 64 percent increased risk of a preterm birth with just a single induced abortion.
