This a great clip Laura. I have been presenting for years another to teens:

incredible! It is astonishing the vast intricacy of non-sentient life eh? Do you think it rivals sentient (adult human thought processing)? Yep Reality’s all- precious ‘sentience is THE greatest, no?
John – agreed – there is some sort of communication occurring on a level we have no understanding about. (Not saying cells are self-aware, but it’s rather amazing the sperm seeks the oocyte and once the cortical reaction occurs, additional physical events are set in motion.)
I thought you people knew all the sciencey stuff about reproduction. Why do you keep referring to it as a miracle?
It is astonishing the vast intricacy of non-sentient life eh? – yes it is. Eaten any oysters lately. Having a living christmas tree this year?
there is some sort of communication occurring on a level we have no understanding about. – a chemical reaction.
“Eaten any oysters lately.”
Ew.
“I thought you people knew all the sciencey stuff about reproduction. Why do you keep referring to it as a miracle?”
You can be in awe of scientific things. I’m in awe of the vastness of the universe or the fact that the atoms that make up your body once were part of a star. And while reproduction is a biological process, not a miracle, it is highly unlikely that the genes will combine in a way to make YOU or any specific person, which is awe-inspiring in my opinion.
Yes Jack, there is much that is ‘awesome’, although not in the strict biblical sense.
But it ain’t no miracle.
it is highly unlikely that the genes will combine in a way to make YOU or any specific person – huh? The genes of two donors always play mix’n’match to make a specific lifeform.
“ it is highly unlikely that the genes will combine in a way to make YOU or any specific person – huh? The genes of two donors always play mix’n’match to make a specific lifeform.”
What I meant was, if my parents genes had combined in just a slightly different way I’d be a completely different human being. Everyone is unique and irreplaceable because of this. I find it pretty awesome.
Yeah it’s kinda awesome but it’s really just basic biological chemistry and a dash of math.
Well I think it’s cool and I don’t care if you are all boring about it! :)
I think it’s cool too Jack. And not boring. It just isn’t a miracle and we know how it happens.
Reality, the science DOES NOT KNOW this or much of any life process. One simple example, the apple has well over 5,000 different chemicals. Science can tell you how some of them work …. maybe 50 or so. THE REST IS PRETENDS-VILLE!
These processes are so stunningly beautiful that perceived human wishes seem crass in comparison.
Nah, they don’t pretend, they just say “we don’t know yet.” It’s not hard.
What has ‘perceived human wishes’ got to do with it?
that’s the rub Reality – the ‘yet’ is the biggest faux-pas of them all. It is supposedly applied by people who know very little about science themselves. For example, a Harvard prof in Math (not an easy thing) was so enthralled at the math in life processes that these he said point to a creator. Reality in his bold way assumes himself superior because HE KNOWS that God does not exist. And life is not a miracle, eh? Can you say: marvelous?
one wish is CHOICE – it seems a mere whim when interfering in such grandeur, like dumping garbage in the Grand Canyon.
the ‘yet’ is the biggest faux-pas of them all. – this statement doesn’t make any sense.
It is supposedly applied by people who know very little about science themselves. – supposedly? You’ve never heard scientists or academics say such a thing?
For example, a Harvard prof in Math (not an easy thing) was so enthralled at the math in life processes that these he said point to a creator. – yes, there are a few of those types around, pity. They should try harder.
Reality in his bold way assumes himself superior because HE KNOWS that God does not exist. – that’s your judgement call.
And life is not a miracle, eh? – no.
Can you say: marvelous? – well I don’t have the wherewithall to provide an audio link but yes, I do say marvelous.
one wish is CHOICE – it seems a mere whim when interfering in such grandeur, – our choices are more important at some times than at others.
like dumping garbage in the Grand Canyon. – something I would never do.
“reality” is A MIRACLE.
Thomas not nly is reality a MIRACLE, but so too is Reality (even when he does not ‘see’ it yet)!
Above I mentioned the word ‘yet’ as being a faut-pas. The problem here is the relation of creation (the thing itself) and man’s relationship to it (which is naming). [This difficulty is addressed in ‘Zen and Art 0f Motorcycle Maintenance’ by Kert V.] We can jabber on and on for decades and never actually create anything … not one atom; not even the space and time for one atom. THE INTERNET KNOWS LITTLE ACTUALLY; IT CANNOT EVEN DUPLICATE THE SIMPLEST FORM OF LIFE. It probably come up with theory upon theory, but to actually create life – nope. Pure (and cr***y science) fantasy, not one iota of reality.
Miracle is the best word. Absolutely.
“reality” is A MIRACLE. – how sweet of you to say “thomas r”, but I don’t think I am.
[This difficulty is addressed in ‘Zen and Art 0f Motorcycle Maintenance’ by Kert V.] – a book which is irredeemably flawed in its basic premise. Most disappointing.
THE INTERNET KNOWS LITTLE ACTUALLY; IT CANNOT EVEN DUPLICATE THE SIMPLEST FORM OF LIFE. – the internet is not a physical presence John.
If not a physical presence, then does it have value? Howso?
You’re on it. People communicate via it. There is lotsa info on it (which usually needs to be taken with a grain of salt). But it can’t construct anything. It can’t produce Lin28a fr’instance. But you can find out what Lin28a is using it.
Given the billions of ‘market value’ apportioned to elements of it it may have some value apart from its general usefullness.
then the Internet is an ‘it’ (not alive). Any and all ‘it’s’ cannot produce life. Does ‘life’ exist? Does life exist in a form that has worth beyond an attempt to deny its continuing to be a MIRACLE. Why do you think stopping-an-ongoing-MIRACLE is OK?
Feel free to allocate a gender to it if you wish John, no harm in that. People do with with cars’n’stuff.
I don’t think the internet has anything which constitutes reproductive capabilities or the ability to wield test-tubes in a laboratory itself.
Yes, life exists, why would you think otherwise?
Life is not a MIRACLE, not even a miracle.
A miracle is anything that we cannot explain and even replicate. The conceived life in the womb qualifies 100 percent. This discussion we’ve had many times. We are in awe of the processes that shape this new life in the womb. And we are in awe of the fact thast we cannot explain how that occurs beyond the sexual contact. Chew on this awhile “reality.”
And yes, you are a miracle precisely because you came to exist through this wonderful process.
That is w/o question. The real dilemma presents itself with how we use this miracle of our life beyond the womb…
No “thomas r.”, a miracle is an event not ascribable to human power or the laws of nature due to a lack of knowledge or observation. This category shrinks on a daily basis.
Unless you haven’t been paying attention, we do know how conception and gestation works. We can explain it and we are close to replicating it.
damn Reality, are you really that dumb or way into sci-fi? We are not close in fact no way near even cloning of higher vertebrates after the Dolly fiasco. Science actually knows very little and so is essentially mute except an occasional buffoon!!
and that’s the truth.
beauty – like miracles is often (but not always in-the-eye-of-the-beholder). One exception of note was the Miracle of The Sun at Fatima where 17,000 people witnessed/participated.
You seriously think we are a long way from having the ability to clone ‘higher vertebrates’ despite the ability to clone sheep and dogs? What biological markers or construct do humans have which make them such ‘higher vertebrates’ compared to other mammals?
The buffoons in science are those who claim that science and creationism/ID can be reconciled.
The miracle of the sun at fatima? You cite that? Oh boy.
‘beauty’ is s subjective judgement based on factors such as taste and preferences, it is indeed in the eye of the beholder.
A miracle is an event for which the cause is unexplained or unobserved.
