I love this video! The first time I ever saw it I bawled. So beautiful. But that baby does not look Chinese. I’ve also never heard of a boy being available for adoption from China. They hold on to their boys. Its their girls they don’t want.
Friends of mine just adopted a little boy from China.
There aren’t as many available as girls. Tis true.

A couple I know adopted a special needs boy who was around 3 when they got him from China. He is doing well. He just needed some interventions not available and in his rural area was of no use if he couldn’t work on the farm so he was abandoned so he didn’t count against the parents quota. I remember how happy I was when I saw my son. He was only six weeks old. He was such a sweet little guy. I can’t believe he is an addict in jail. I am sorry to keep on writing about this but my heart is just shattered. Please, please pray for Isaiah.

Exactly. So many boys and girls in China are labeled “special needs” for vision issues or cleft palate or any number of things that we can address in this country.

Thank you phillymiss. I know having a family member with a drug problem or a mental illness is difficult. You walk a fine balance of loving, letting go and knowing when to answer a cry for help (because not all cries are real, they are just a way to the next fix) but we always hope, don’t we. I don’t want to say anything more personal because last time opened this door here I got plenty of comments suggesting I was insane. I pray for my family member daily and will pray for your son if that is OK. I am sure most people don’t consider me a Christian but unless Christ himself tells me otherwise I will call myself one.
Thanks to the commenters who were skeptical that Jacob was born in China. It prodded me to delve deeper into the Chens’ blog, I had assumed he was ethnic Chinese (though I rather agree with the old saying that all newborns look like Winston Chuchill. :) )
On their rocky road to adoption they had been looking to adopt from China, thinking there would be less baggage as far as the historical background and current circumstances. They were right, in that the birth mother – an Asian American – changed her mind at one point.
Judging from Jacob’s fair hair at ten months, it does appear he is of mixed ethnicity. So we all had part of the story right. Here is the post that makes it clearer:

Have any of you ever seen “The Dying rooms” documentary? I just watched it for the first time days ago and it moved me so powerfully I wanted to adopt a baby girl from China. But my sister who is pursuing adoption from Ethiopia had already looked into China and they have rules for how much a family must make in income. It made me so angry to think they would rather tie these little girls to potty chairs or beds in urine soaked clothes rather than let a “poor” family like mine adopt, even though my boys are well-fed, well-dressed and we have a very nice home (even if it isn’t fancy) It is clean and spacious.
It just hurts my heart that people don’t love children and don’t value them and care for them. God bless this young couple and their baby son! It is a truly beautiful story and gives us a glimpse of the Christian’s miraculous adoption into God’s family. We were strangers but God took us and called us His own. Wow!
Again I’m so sorry about Isaiah phillymiss. Heroin is a beast. Remember that sobriety is possible and there’s always hope he’ll turn himself around.
I know you know this Phillymiss but just to encourage you in the heat of battle, prayer works.

Tenn I don’t know you but your prayers are appreciated. I have a good friend who is Jewish and we pray for each others families all the time. He is also prochoice. Sometimes we just have to agree to disagree.

The boys available from China tend to have disabilities, and parents want sons who will be most likely to able to take care of them in their old age. (some of the disabled boys may very well grow into adult men who would be able to do that*, but it’s possible some of their biological parents don’t want to take that risk)
*if their disability turns out not to be as severe as was thought it could have been when they were babies.
Hi phillymiss. I am so sorry to hear about your son. I will be praying for him and your family. God is able to turn his life around. I know your heart is broken right now but God is able to heal your broken heart as well. I have a dear friend who was a drug addict for years and is now a minister. She has been drug free for 15 years now. May God bless you.
BTW I love the adoption story of this wonderful Christian couple. I loved his analogy of Christians being adopted into God’s family. May God bless this precious couple.
Apparently it’s mostly girls available for adoption in India too. There’s no one-child policy there, but the expense of a young woman’s dowry is what mainly causes this.
