7-8. But I go to bed early (8-10p) and get up very early (4-5a). Never need an alarm clock. My circadian rhythm has been off ever since I worked midnights. Sometimes I’ll wake up at 2a not tired. I don’t fight it. I get up a couple hours and come here and putz.
4 hours at night, 4 hours in the afternoon, on average.
6-8 hours.
4-5 hours.
My goodness, Jess. You’re in an interesting club. Just read this on “7 sleep habits of highly effective people”:
Martha Stewart, Thomas Edison, and Bill Clinton all said they got less than five hours of sleep each night, while Albert Einstein, Calvin Coolidge, and Ronald Reagan said they each needed 10 or more. The point is each individual’s sleep needs are different, experts say. The vast majority of people need a bare minimum of eight hours of sleep, and ideally as many as 10 hours for optimum performance. But precious few are spending that much time beneath the sheets. According to sleep experts, the national average for adults is just under 7 hours of sleep each night, and one-third of adults get 6.5 hours or less.”
8. Or you don’t want to be around me. Certainly don’t want to be in a car that I’m driving. Can do with 7, but my body freaks out, cuz it’s so used to 8.
Like you Jill, I go to to bed early (9:00)and get up at 5:00…definitely a morning person. By 7:00 at night, I’m grumpy, can’t concentrate and just a lump!
Me 2 MK. I usually call it a day by 7p.
We usually go to bed at 10:00, and wake up at 6:30-7:00. So approx. 8 hours of sleep per night for me.
I believe that Donald Trump is also on that 4 hour a night list.
Man, it really just depends on the day. On the weekends, when I’m working the late double shifts and whatnot, as well as that being my playtime with friends and the bars and such, maybe 3-4. Weekdays, I usually try for at least 6. I’m definitely a night owl though- I can’t go to bed until around 2 am, at least. Usually later.
Hey Jill,
this is a much more serious topic than most people think. For a cure to cancer, obesity, heart disease, diabetes Type II, etc are all sleep-related conditions. Read – ‘Lights Out’ by TS Wiley.
Answer: it depends – summer @4hrs; winter – 14-16hrs
I get 6-8. My one year old gets 11 at night and a 3 hour nap. No wonder he outpaces me.
I usually nod off around 11 PM when I’m at my apartment (a bit later when I go to the parental’s house and I have access to the intarwebz) and I wake up between 6:30 and 8 AM every morning. 6:30 on Wednesdays and Fridays because of work and 8 AM on the other days unless I need to take a shower, because then it’s 7-7:30AM. So I guess it’s between 7-9 hours, which never seems like enough.
Though last night I was out by 11:30 and I didn’t get up until 10. It was glorious. I hadn’t had a lazy day in weeks since I’ve been working all the time.
I do like getting up early though now…I enjoy watching the Today Show. :)
Hippie…how do you get your one year old to sleep that long??? My almost 2 year old still wakes up all the time..but her crib is in my room and she usually wakes up and comes into bed with me. But she is always waking me up at night..probably why I don’t get as much sleep as I would like to. But she takes a good 3-4 hour nap in the middle of the day so I am glad I get a nap too!! I’m sure the fact that we share a room is why she doesn’t sleep through the night but oh well!! I like sleeping with her anyway.
But to answer the topic question…I get relatively 8-10 depending on when I go to bed. But it’s not consistent as my 2 year old still wakes up at night.
Elizabeth,
your daughter sounds like my older son. He didn’t sleep nearly as much. My little spud has always been a super sleeper. He slept through the night the day I brought him home from the hospital. When I woke in the morning, I was terrified something had happened, but he was fine. He is a freak of nature! But hey, at my age, I need a break.
I saw the picture of your daughter. Wow, what a cutie!
Having such a darling just makes life worth living!
I get about 7 hours a night. I get up pretty early, sometimes as early as 4:30 am. My usual wake-up time is around 5:30. I can’t sleep late even if I get the chance.
I can run for a while on 5-6 hours a night, occasionally 4. Every couple of weeks I crash and need 8-9, but then I’m back on schedule.
I wish I were like Edison, who only needed 2 hours a night. I could get so much more done. I am a night owl and an early bird–I HATE HATE HATE sleeping in. So unproductive.

Theater people…@@
Hippie,
Yeah my mom keeps saying that “she will sleep through the night when she’s damn well ready to” haha. It’s really okay though. That’s what they make caffeine for!!
7-10 hours, depending if it’s a workout day or not.
I feel awesome with 10 hours. Not always possible with little ones, right Elizabeth?
Used to be 10-12, but now that I’m getting older, more like 8-10. I’m alot like MK…anything less than 8 & I’m a basket case!
I fall asleep VERY quickly (usually in the middle of my prayers), & constantly dream throughout the night. I takes two alarm clocks to wake me up, because I usually just incorporate the noise into whatever dream I’m having at the time! so sad…..
I fall asleep VERY quickly (usually in the middle of my prayers)
Laura, isn’t that like a really big sin? ; )
So many days it’s only 4 or 5 hours of sleep for me – just being dumb and being online or driving or playing games way late….
Doug :: yawn ::
I am a night owl & go to bed between 2 am and 6 am ~ get up between 9am and noon. Usually take a nap in the afternoon for a couple hours. I am allergic to morning :) and I think best late in the evening.
MK –
What’s wrong with Theater People? (wink) I do some of my most creative choreography at 2am. Sometimes I wake up and can choreograph an entire song in a few hours. Nothing feels better. – But then around 2 in the afternoon I’m dead tired, and my kids are rearing to go!!:)
Doug said, “Laura, isn’t that like a really big sin?”
Doug..I don’t know if it’s a sin or not, but I’m sure God isn’t smiling upon it!!!
Tara…4-5??? You have go to be kidding me! How do you do it? I mean…have all that energy and excitement about life on only 4-5hrs??? God Bless You!
I think artists as a whole are mostly night people.
My hours of sleep depend on what time I feel like going to sleep and what time I have to go in to work the next day. If I have to get up at 5, I would probably try to go to bed by 11 or so, if I don’t have to get up early, I will stay up later. When I was in school a lot of times I would be up at all hours finishing my artwork for an 8 am critique.
6-7 hrs usually 12:30 -7
One time when I traveled to Germany I didn’t sleep a wink for 1 week. I was jet-lagged and could’nt get out of the cycle…and had to work during the day.
Haha Carder it is hard to sleep with little ones..my daughter now will keep kissing me til I wake up..this is at 7:30 usually. I’m like Little Missy..I am not getting up until 8! Haha but the kisses are cute.
I think artists as a whole are mostly night people.
Don’t be so sure. My ex (a musician–I mean a real one, not a “depressed punk band” one) was always tired by 10. Being the night owl I am, whenever he was over, we’d end up staying up until 2 in the morning then (being as we’re both morning people) we’d get up at 7 or so. Then he’d get tired and fall asleep again when I was in the shower.
But we never let each other sleep later than 9:30–much too late!
Tara-
Do you teach dance somewhere??
Doug,
So many days it’s only 4 or 5 hours of sleep for me – just being dumb and being online or driving or playing games way late….
No wonder you have such a hard time understanding reason…:)
Theater People,
My sister lives in Australia, so calling her is a bit tricky…what time is it there? Do they do the time change?…etc.
But at least that’s forgivable.
I also, however, have a “theater” friend, that lives less than 5 miles from. I have to do the same mathematical gymnastics to call her. There is a bout a 45 minute window of opportunity that I can call her. Like 5:15 AM. She goes to bed at 4:30 and wakes up around 2:00!
Last week she wanted me to go to see a friend play in a bar right by my house. He didn’t start playing until 10:00PM. I called her and said I wasn’t going to make it. When she gave me grief about being an old lady, I told her I’d go if she would come over to my house the following week at 7am for coffee. Needless to say I didn’t go out that night…lol.
I repeat: Theater People @@

LOL
Way to early to be posting:) Still we are just misunderstood. Just think of all the great symphonies, requiems, and operas, that were written in the middle of the night, by the likes of Mozert, Beethoven, Bach, Handel, and Stauss. Our hearts would not know what it’s like to be stirred. Music is so powerful.
Elizabeth – I am not teaching right now, but I do give private lessons for those might be interested. I started dancing at 5, and was semi-professional. I’ve choreographed a lot of musicals. I also do litugical dance. Last year I had a group of girls that danced in church. It was wonderful. I always liked the vision of David dancing before God.
Not nearly enough. No matter what, the morning always arrives very quickly.
Tara
Oh I see that’s pretty cool..cause I’ve taken dance at pretty much every studio around the suburbs and a bunch in the city so I wasn’t sure if you taught in a studio or not. I’ve also done a ton of musicals myself! Oh and my brother dances for the joffrey..so if you go to the nutcracker this season..you’ll see him!
6-7. If you don’t want me to drink coffee in the morning it has to be at least 8 or 9.
6-8

::raspberries:: Nah – I can do that with no sleep at all.
Yum… Coffee Is Our Friend.
Jiiiiiiiillll,
Doug is spitting at me!
What a tattletale….
Next time I’m rentin’ a firetruck.
haha :-D
Doug, Do you like Starbucks?
Heather – I do like Starbucks.
However, it’s expensive. I love coffee, but that includes the free stuff from motel lobbies and “continental breakfasts,” of which I have partook probably almost 5,000 times in my life.
I will pass by Starbucks at times, thinking “It’s just too much money.”
Other times, I’ll slide in and get a “Quad Venti Latte” – a big latte with two extra shots of espresso – for $5.61. Just a big, strong cup of coffee…. Sheesh.
I don’t claim any real rhyme or reason. There are times I’ll go to a Cici’s pizza buffet and relish the cheap $4.49 price. The next day I’ll go to an Outback Steakhouse with a co-worker and we’ll drink and eat like crazy and blow over $100 each.
Starbucks stuff does taste good.
Doug
Doug, Cici’s Pizza???? Oh, I love it!
Heather, last Cici’s I went to was in Durham, NC three weeks ago. I went late, thinking it’d be relatively uncrowded – heh heh – no way, it was overrun with kids screaming and overturning plates and chairs.
